Airtel international roaming packs: prepaid & postpaid (T&C dated 24 Sep 2026)
Airtel India international roaming plans start at ₹698 for a 1-day prepaid IR pack and reach ₹4,999 for a 1-year pack, and one set of packs covers every country Airtel lists. The five-day pack costs ₹998 for 4 GB, about ₹250 per GB. Postpaid packs start at ₹2,599 or ₹2,999, depending on your circle.

Updated on 12 Oct 2026 — what changed. First edition, built from Airtel’s terms and conditions (T&C) dated 24 Sep 2026. The 5-day and 10-day prepaid prices there differ from the FAQ on Airtel’s own roaming page; both are shown below.
Airtel international roaming in short
Airtel India international roaming plans come as one set of international roaming (IR) packs for all covered countries. Airtel advertises 189 countries (“Single pack for 189 countries”), so check that your destination is on the country list on Airtel’s IR page. Prepaid packs cost ₹698 to ₹4,999 and postpaid packs ₹2,599 to ₹14,999 (T&C dated 24 Sep 2026).
Three rules decide most trips. You can book a prepaid pack up to 30 days ahead and a postpaid pack up to 365 days ahead. Prepaid days count from when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network, not from payment; the ₹4,999 pack is the exception. With roaming on but no pack, Airtel bars mobile data.
If you need data and not calls on your Indian number, jump to the comparison with a data eSIM.
Airtel prepaid IR packs: full table from the T&C
Airtel’s T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list five prepaid IR packs, including a pack for 30 days, and one data pack for international roaming (a top-up). Each pack is bought as an Airtel international roaming recharge on a prepaid number. We checked every row on 12 Oct 2026.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Data | Days | Minutes · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹698 | 1 GB | 1 | 100 min · 10 SMS | about ₹698 |
| ₹998 | 4 GB | 5 | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| ₹1,298 | 6 GB | 10 | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| ₹2,998 | 10 GB | 30 | 300 min · 20 SMS | about ₹300 |
| ₹4,999 | 7 GB | 365 | 100 min · 200 SMS | about ₹714 |
| ₹699 data top-up | 2 GB | until pack ends | none | about ₹350 |
Source: Airtel T&C PDF dated 24 Sep 2026, Appendix 2, checked on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). SMS figures are outgoing SMS. On the ₹698 pack, minutes count incoming calls abroad as well as outgoing ones, to local and Indian numbers, and incoming SMS are free. Sources: Airtel T&C.
The T&C state that the revised pricing for the 5-day and 10-day packs is effective from 29 Jul 2026. Airtel’s FAQ on its IR page still lists Rs.898 for 5 days (2 GB) and Rs.1198 for 10 days (3 GB). Use the T&C prices: ₹998 for 4 GB and ₹1,298 for 6 GB. The 10-day pack is the cheapest per GB.
Three limits sit behind the numbers. The ₹699 top-up works only on top of an active pack. The ₹4,999 pack is a hybrid: in India it gives 2.5 GB a day, and its 365 days run from the date of purchase, not from the day you land abroad. The ₹2,998 pack adds an in-flight allowance of 250 MB, 100 minutes and 100 SMS.
In-flight
Airtel sells in-flight packs on partner airlines only (AeroMobile): ₹196 prepaid (₹195 postpaid), ₹295 and ₹595, each valid 24 hours. They carry 250 MB, 500 MB and 1 GB, with 100 minutes of outgoing calls and 100 SMS (T&C of 24 Sep 2026, checked 12 Oct 2026).
Airtel postpaid packs, and why Maharashtra has its own grid
Airtel’s T&C carry two postpaid grids, so the Airtel postpaid IR pack you see depends on your circle. Customers in every circle except Maharashtra use the national grid (§7.1.1), from ₹2,999 for 10 days. Maharashtra circle customers use a separate Maharashtra price grid (T&C clause 7.1.2), from ₹2,599 for 7 days. Checked 12 Oct 2026.
The national grid, all of India except the Maharashtra circle:
| Pack | Days | Data | Minutes · SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹2,999 | 10 | unlimited: 10 GB high-speed, then 80 kbps | 100 min a day · 20 SMS |
| ₹3,999 | 30 | unlimited: 30 GB high-speed, then 80 kbps | 100 min a day · 20 SMS, plus in-flight |
| ₹5,999 | 90 | unlimited: 40 GB high-speed, then 80 kbps | 900 min · 100 SMS |
| ₹14,999 | 365 | unlimited: 40 GB high-speed, then 80 kbps | 3,000 min · 100 SMS |
Source: Airtel T&C §7.1.1.
The Maharashtra circle grid, marked “Effective from 19th August” in the T&C:
| Pack | Days | High-speed data | Minutes · SMS |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹2,599 | 7 | 5 GB | 100 min a day · 10 SMS |
| ₹3,499 | 14 | 20 GB | 100 min a day · 15 SMS |
| ₹3,999 | 30 | 30 GB | 100 min a day · 20 SMS |
| ₹5,999 | 90 | 40 GB | 900 min · 100 SMS |
| ₹14,999 | 365 | 40 GB | 3,000 min · 100 SMS |
Source: Airtel T&C PDF dated 24 Sep 2026, checked on 12 Oct 2026. The Maharashtra rows in the T&C do not state the speed after the high-speed allowance, so we do not either. Postpaid data top-ups, available on top of a pack, are ₹699 for 2 GB over 5 days, ₹2,499 for 8 GB over 10 days and ₹15,000 for 40 GB over 30 days. Sources: Airtel T&C §7.1.2.
Postpaid validity follows the time zone of the country you visit. Prepaid validity is calculated in IST, so a prepaid day can end at an odd hour on the ground. For a 10-day trip the national postpaid pack costs ₹2,999 for 10 GB high-speed, against ₹1,298 for 6 GB prepaid.
How to activate and deactivate Airtel international roaming (IRSTART / IRSTOP)
Prepaid users turn international roaming on and off by SMS to 121: send “IRSTART” to switch it on and “IRSTOP” to switch it off (FAQ on Airtel’s IR page, checked 12 Oct 2026). Airtel lists these codes for prepaid. To activate IR on postpaid, check the Airtel Thanks app or Airtel customer care for IR before you fly.
The booking window has a trap. Postpaid packs can be booked up to 365 days ahead, prepaid packs only 30 days ahead. If you do not travel within 30 days of booking a prepaid pack, it expires and Airtel does not reimburse it. Validity starts only when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.
On the phone itself, switch on data roaming for the Airtel line, then check how to keep your Indian SIM active for OTPs before you fly.
One r/Airtel user wrote on 8 Mar 2026: “make sure to disable IR services once your pack is over. For me it resulted into a 3,423 INR extra charge.” That is one customer’s account of a bill, not a price reference. Per the T&C, after a pack ends calls cost ₹10 a minute and SMS ₹5, so send IRSTOP once the pack is over.
Without a pack: data barred, ₹10 a minute, Roam-Without-Fear
Without an active pack, Airtel bars mobile data abroad “to avoid any accidental usage”, and calls cost ₹10 a minute after a pack ends, with SMS at ₹5. These are Airtel’s roaming charges without pack cover. Postpaid lines get a safety net called Roam-Without-Fear. Airtel’s T&C of 24 Sep 2026 are the source, checked 12 Oct 2026.
For a traveller, “data barred” means maps and ride apps will not load on mobile data. A prepaid user who lands without a pack can activate the IR service for ₹118 (28 days) at standard rates. That is a service activation, not a pack. Buy a pack before you fly.
Roam-Without-Fear sets postpaid roaming charges on lines with roaming on and no pack. Standard rates apply until the day’s charges in that country pass ₹698. Airtel then auto-applies a ₹698 one-day pack (1 GB, 100 minutes in and out, 10 SMS) until 11:59 pm local time, and repeats the cycle every day. Airtel states that the threshold benefits “may be revised from time to time”.
The rule limits a bill day by day, not for the whole trip, and bill shock is still possible over a long stay. Over several days a booked pack is the predictable option.
Airtel pack vs a data eSIM for your trip length
An Airtel pack bundles minutes on your Indian number; a data eSIM carries data only. Airtel’s 4 GB pack for 5 days costs about ₹250 per GB (T&C of 24 Sep 2026). Our Thailand eSIM with 5 GB for 30 days costs ≈ ₹628 (9 Oct rate), or ₹126 (US$1.30) per GB.
Among Airtel India international roaming plans, the prepaid packs fit a Thailand trip like this: ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days, or ₹1,298 for 6 GB over 10 days. Our Thailand eSIM costs ≈ ₹289 (9 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days and ≈ ₹531 (9 Oct rate) for 2 GB over 15 days. The 5 GB plan above is charged US$6.49 by card. It includes no calls and no SMS. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Pick the Airtel pack if you need calls on your Indian number. The ₹998 pack includes 150 minutes; our eSIM includes none. It also suits a trip of up to 5 days where you want one SIM and no setup.
Pick a data eSIM if you mainly need maps, messaging and hotel bookings, and your trip is long or data-heavy. Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The install guide covers iPhone and Android.
Use both if you want OTPs. Bank OTPs arrive as SMS on your Indian number, which a data eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Airtel SIM in the phone with its data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide has the settings.
See the country pages for Thailand, Nepal, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Vietnam, Europe and the USA, and the roaming hub for the other operators.
Airtel’s country list includes Nepal, Bhutan, the Maldives and Georgia, which not every Jio pack covers.
Free roaming on new postpaid plans? What we can confirm
Some postpaid and annual plans now bundle a few days of roaming — check your plan in the Airtel or Vi app before you travel. We could not confirm details such as the number of days, countries or plan prices on Airtel’s own pages on 12 Oct 2026, so this page quotes none.
Reports of “free international roaming” on Airtel plans come from third-party posts, not from Airtel’s roaming page or its T&C, so we treat them as unconfirmed.
