Jio, Airtel & Vi roaming in South Africa vs a travel eSIM
Jio’s 100- and 75-country packs do not list South Africa; its World Pack (132 countries) and its data packs do.
Airtel and Vi both list the country, BSNL for postpaid only. The 19 packs in our tables cost ₹599 to ₹5,899 (about ₹216–₹3,980 per GB where the data is capped), checked 19 Oct 2026.
Short answer: which Indian packs cover South Africa
All three sell packs that list it, but Jio’s choice is narrow. Airtel’s ₹1,298 pack gives 6 GB and 200 minutes over 10 days, about ₹216 per GB. Jio’s World Pack gives 2 GB over 14 days for ₹1,499, and Jio’s only 7-day packs are data packs without calls. Prices as listed on 19 Oct 2026.
Which Indian SIM works in South Africa? Jio,
Airtel and Vi SIMs work once international roaming is on, but mobile data needs a pack. A South Africa eSIM from India carries data only; ours runs on Vodacom, MTN and Cell C, all on 4G. Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. India’s Ministry of Tourism counts 76,907 departures to South Africa in 2025.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
Jio in South Africa: the World Pack and the data packs, not the 100-country pack
Jio international roaming plans for South Africa come from two families, the World Pack and the data packs. The ₹589, ₹951 and ₹1,551 packs from its 75- and 100-country lists do not apply. Prepaid and postpaid customers see the same packs, and the Jio South Africa pack rows below are a selection.
eSIM Go is not affiliated with Jio,
Airtel, Vi or BSNL. Pack details are taken from their own pages on the date shown.

A week in South Africa on Jio therefore means data only; the shortest Jio pack with calls is the 14-day World Pack. On pack validity, Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.”

Airtel and Vi packs for South Africa: Vi’s Budget Set 2 (table)
The
Airtel IR pack South Africa travellers buy is Airtel’s one prepaid set, the same as for any covered country. For Vi roaming South Africa sits in the non-UL zone, where Ultra packs give 2 to 5 GB, and in Budget Set 2, which carries less data than Set 1.

Vi’s postpaid table puts South Africa in Set 2, where ₹3,999 for 10 days gives 14 GB; we could not confirm that this country table is current. Vi’s IR packs are “not applicable for customers in J&K, Assam and North East”. BSNL lists South Africa as a postpaid partner network only, and a partner network is not a pack. Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Cape Town with a Kenya safari: packs vs the Africa plan
A Kenya leg changes the terms for two operators. Jio sells no data pack for Kenya; only the Global Pack balance, spent at standard roaming rates, lists it. A World Pack bought for Cape Town has nothing to carry on to Nairobi. Airtel’s single list names both countries.
Vi puts both in its non-UL zone. Its ₹1,495 Budget pack, though, prints 2 GB for Set 1, which includes Kenya, and 750 MB for Set 2, which includes South Africa; the same postpaid table puts Kenya in Set 1. One pack carries two sets of terms here; how Vi counts it across both is not in its terms, so ask Vi. See roaming in Kenya and the Kenya guide.
Our Africa plan lists both countries on fixed-GB rows, with a manual APN on Android (APN guide). The guide weighs it in South Africa plan or the Africa plan for a safari add-on.
Cost per GB for a 7-day and a 14-day South Africa trip
How we rank: the shortest pack from each operator that lasts the whole trip, sorted by price per GB, our division of price by data, with Vi’s “FREE”-data rows left out. Vi prints none for South Africa, so every row here has a per-GB figure.
Seven days: Airtel’s 10-day ₹1,298 pack is the shortest fit, about ₹216 per GB. Jio’s is the 7-day ₹599 data pack, about ₹599 with no calls; with calls, the 14-day World Pack at about ₹750. Vi’s 7-day Ultra comes to about ₹1,748. Order:
Airtel, Jio, Vi.
Fourteen days: Airtel has no 14-day prepaid pack, so its fit is ₹2,998 for 30 days, about ₹300 per GB. Jio’s 14-day ₹999 data pack comes to about ₹500, the World Pack with calls to about ₹750. Vi’s 14-day Ultra gives 5 GB for ₹5,195, about ₹1,039. Order: Airtel, Jio, Vi.
On our side, today: 1 GB over 7 days costs ₹369, 5 GB over 30 days ₹1,249 and 10 GB over 30 days ₹2,149, about ₹215 per GB. The 7-day unlimited plan costs ₹3,499 and drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Your card is charged exactly the ₹ amount shown at checkout, in rupees; we don’t convert currency. Because the seller is registered outside India, some banks treat a rupee payment as international and may add a fee; check your card’s terms. How card payments work.
Airtel’s 6 GB pairs with our 5 GB row, the nearest size, and Jio’s 8 GB with the 10 GB row. A pack adds minutes on your Indian number; our plans have none. Plan days start at the first connection to a South African network. The South Africa eSIM page lists every plan. The South Africa SIM card guide covers a local SIM after landing, and a physical South Africa SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot.
A data-only eSIM receives no SMS for your Indian number, so bank OTPs never reach it. Leave the Indian SIM in as a second line with its data off; nobody can guarantee an OTP arrives. The guide to keep Indian number for OTP walks through the settings.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
How we checked these prices
The checked on date beside each row is the day we opened the operator’s document. For Jio international roaming plans for South Africa, that is Jio’s plan list and country lists; for
Airtel and Vi, their T&C (Airtel’s dated 24 Sep 2026). Vi publishes its international roaming South Africa zones as an image, typed in by hand, so confirm the country in the Vi app. Jio’s pack text and its data-pack list disagree on a country count, so we give none.
