South Africa eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
An eSIM for South Africa installed in India gives you data on landing: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹334 (12 Oct rate), charged US$3.49 by card. It uses three host networks, Vodacom, MTN and Cell C, on 4G, and includes no calls and no SMS.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹599 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹216 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹334 US$3.49 by card; from ≈ ₹177 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
The storefront has twelve plans; six are unlimited data, from 3 to 30 days, and slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. A South Africa tourist SIM is a physical card that needs a free SIM slot, and identity is checked before a local line is issued. We have not verified current local offers, so we quote no South Africa SIM card price in rand.
Indian nationals made 76,907 departures to South Africa in 2025 (Ministry of Tourism). The data plan validity starts at the first connection to a South African network, so an install at home uses no days. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Charged US$3.49 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in South Africa vs this eSIM
Jio lists South Africa on its World Pack and data packs, not on the 100-country or 75-country packs. Mauritius, by contrast, is on both.
Airtel covers it in its single pack set, and Vi in its prepaid non-UL zone and Budget Set 2. The five packs below cost ₹599 to ₹1,499 as listed on 12 Oct 2026.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | ₹ | Data | Days | Minutes | ₹ per GB (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio World Pack | ₹1,499 | 2 GB | 14 | 100 + incoming | about ₹750 |
| Jio data pack | ₹599 | 1 GB | 7 | none | about ₹599 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹998 | 4 GB | 5 | 150 | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹1,298 | 6 GB | 10 | 200 | about ₹216 |
| Vi Budget Set 2 | ₹1,495 | 750 MB | 15 | 100 | about ₹1,993 |

For a Jio user, the World Pack is the only option in the table with calls, and 2 GB for 14 days is thin. Our 5 GB row for 30 days works out at about ₹239 (US$2.50) per GB, charged US$12.49. On 12 Oct 2026 that sat between Airtel’s two rows and well below both Jio rows. Airtel suits a trip of up to 10 days with calls on your Indian number. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
BSNL lists South Africa among its postpaid partner networks but not its prepaid ones, and a partner network is not a pack. The Jio roaming guide sets out Jio’s pack families.

A week in South Africa: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
South Africa plan or the Africa plan for a safari add-on
Our Africa plan lists South Africa with 35 other countries, but it costs more at every size. On 12 Oct 2026 its 5 GB row for 30 days was ≈ ₹3,926 (12 Oct rate) against ≈ ₹1,196 (12 Oct rate) on the South Africa plan. It also has no unlimited rows; take it only when the route leaves South Africa. Egypt and Kenya are on the same list.
Its list includes Botswana, Eswatini, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania, but not Namibia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique or Lesotho; the Africa eSIM page has the full list. The Africa plan needs its APN entered by hand on Android, while the South Africa plan sets it automatically (APN guide). The same page sells a separate East Africa plan for Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, which does not include South Africa; see the Kenya guide.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM set up in India
A local SIM on arrival gives you a South African number; on a one-slot phone it also pushes out your Indian SIM. The eSIM keeps the Indian SIM in place. Our plan details name no coverage areas, so we promise nothing specific for game reserves or remote roads. Other destinations have their own guides by country.
For ten days of social media and photos, the data guide uses 0.8 GB a day, about 8 GB (our calculation). The 10 GB row for 30 days covers that at ≈ ₹2,106 (12 Oct rate).
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in South Africa
Your Indian number receives the bank’s OTP texts; the South Africa eSIM has no number and takes no SMS. Keep the Indian SIM switched on as a second line and check with Jio,
Airtel or Vi that SMS works for you in South Africa.
No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers dual-SIM settings.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in South Africa?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats South Africa as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Vodacom and MTN; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹334 (US$3.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,196 (US$12.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,447 (US$35.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in South Africa?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in South Africa?
Only for a South African number. A roaming pack or an eSIM installed in India covers data; a local card needs an identity check.
When do the days on a South Africa eSIM start?
At its first connection to a South African network. Setting it up in India before the flight costs none of the plan’s days.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a South Africa eSIM?
WhatsApp messages use the eSIM’s data. OTPs reach only your Indian number by SMS, which the data-only eSIM cannot receive, so leave the Indian SIM active.
Will my Jio SIM work in South Africa?
Jio sells two options that list South Africa: the World Pack (₹1,499 for 2 GB over 14 days) or a data pack (₹599 for 1 GB over 7 days, no calls), as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Confirm in the MyJio app.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check the exact model on our eSIM phone list; Indian versions of a phone can differ from foreign ones.
