A white village in Andalusia: plan your Spain data before the flight.

For mobile data in Spain you have three routes: a Jio, or Vi roaming pack on your Indian SIM, a Spain SIM card bought after landing, or a data eSIM installed in India. Airtel’s ₹998 prepaid pack gives 4 GB over 5 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

Spain eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

Most trips to Spain need mobile data, not a Spanish phone number. An eSIM for Spain installed in India gives you data on landing: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card. It runs on Orange’s 5G network and includes no calls and no SMS.

The plan works as one SIM for all of Spain’s mainland and the Balearic Islands. Its details do not mention the Canary Islands, so ask us before you rely on it there.

A Spain tourist SIM needs a free SIM slot, and identity is checked before a local line is issued. We have not verified current local offers, so we quote no Spain SIM card price in euros.

Indian nationals made 109,618 departures to Spain in 2025, against 108,377 in 2024: about +1.1% by our calculation from Ministry of Tourism tables. Leisure and business made up 71.05% of the 2025 departures. Other countries are covered in our SIM guides by destination.

The data plan validity starts at the first connection to a Spanish network, so an install at home uses no days. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Spain vs this eSIM

Spain sits on four Jio lists (the 100-country and 75-country packs, the World Pack and the data packs), in ’s single pack set and in Vi’s prepaid UL zone. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026; one-day packs cost less. Italy is in the same Vi zone, so a Spain and Italy trip keeps Vi’s UL terms in both.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Our 5 GB row for 30 days costs ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate), about ₹134 (US$1.40) per GB, charged US$6.99. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

On 12 Oct 2026 that per-GB figure was below every Jio and Airtel row, but our plan carries data only. Pick a pack when you need calls on your Indian number. Vi’s Ultra is the only row with unlimited calls; our 7-day unlimited data plan costs ≈ ₹1,532 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps after 5 GB a day.

Book an Airtel prepaid pack no more than 30 days ahead: if you do not travel within 30 days, it expires with no reimbursement. Some postpaid and annual plans now bundle a few days of roaming — check your plan in the Airtel or Vi app before you travel.

Spain and Portugal on one trip

Our Europe plan lists Spain and Portugal among its 41 countries, so one eSIM covers a Madrid to Lisbon route. On 12 Oct 2026 it was still not the cheaper choice: a 5 GB Spain plan (≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate)) plus a 5 GB Portugal plan (≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate)) cost less than its 10 GB row at ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate).

For Spain alone the gap is wider: 5 GB costs ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate) on the Spain plan against ≈ ₹1,148 (12 Oct rate) on the Europe plan. The Spain plan sets its APN automatically, while the Europe plan needs it entered by hand on Android (APN guide). Two country plans mean two eSIM profiles; the Europe SIM card guide covers the one-install route.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought before leaving India

A Spanish SIM bought after landing needs a free slot and an identity check, and on a one-slot phone it pushes your Indian SIM out. An eSIM bought in India needs one card payment in US dollars and keeps the Indian SIM in place. Buy the local card only when you need a Spanish number.

For a long summer trip, the data guide puts social media and photos at 0.8 GB a day, so 21 days comes to about 17 GB (our calculation), which the 20 GB row covers at ≈ ₹1,436 (12 Oct rate). Thirty days is about 24 GB, above the largest fixed row; the 30-day unlimited plan costs ≈ ₹4,309 (12 Oct rate).

Setting up the Spain eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The QR code install takes place on home Wi-Fi: open your phone’s SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the code you receive after payment. Check your model on the eSIM phone list first, because the phone must run the eSIM next to your Indian SIM.

After landing, choose the Spain line for mobile data. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Spain

A bank OTP is an SMS to your Indian number, and the Spain eSIM carries data only, with no number of its own. Leave that SIM in the phone as the second line and ask Jio, or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Spain on your plan.

No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide shows the dual-SIM settings.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Spain?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Spain as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Orange; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹670 (US$6.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,532 (US$15.99), with 5 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Spain?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Spain?

Not for data. An eSIM installed in India works from landing on Orange’s network. A Spanish SIM makes sense only when you need a Spanish number.

When do the days on a Spain eSIM start?

At the first connection to a Spanish network, so setting it up at home uses no days. Jio states that its pack validity “begins only with your first usage”.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Spain eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run over the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs are SMS to your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active in the second slot.

Is there one eSIM for Spain and Portugal?

Yes. Our Europe plan lists both, among 41 countries. On 12 Oct 2026 a 5 GB Spain plan plus a 5 GB Portugal plan cost less than its 10 GB row, so compare before you buy.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check the exact model on our eSIM phone list, or look for an Add eSIM option in your SIM settings.
