Sri Lanka SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Indian travellers have three ways to get data in Sri Lanka: a Jio, or Vi roaming pack, a Sri Lanka SIM card (the tourist SIM), or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our Sri Lanka eSIM is data-only and starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.

Sri Lanka eSIM or tourist SIM: what Indian travellers need

You need mobile data in Sri Lanka, not a Sri Lankan number. An eSIM for Sri Lanka supplies data from landing, and a Sri Lanka tourist SIM is optional. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone, because bank OTPs still arrive on that number.

India is Sri Lanka’s largest source market. SLTDA counted 531,511 arrivals from India in 2025, up from 416,974 in 2024, a rise of 27.5% (our calculation). India’s Ministry of Tourism separately recorded 541,949 Indian departures to Sri Lanka in 2025. Our plan runs on and Hutchison and includes no calls and no SMS. Other destinations are covered in our guides for Indian travellers abroad.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Sri Lanka vs this eSIM

Jio, and Vi all sell roaming packs that cover Sri Lanka, and BSNL lists a voice-only tariff. The five data packs below cost ₹951 to ₹2,499 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Vi South Asia also covers Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore and Malaysia, so it fits a multi-country trip. For a two-week trip, Jio’s 132-country World Pack costs ₹1,499 for 2 GB over 14 days, about ₹750 per GB. BSNL shows ₹659 for 1 day with 20 voice minutes and ₹3,495 for 7 days with 100 minutes. It lists no data allowance. Do not count on BSNL for maps or WhatsApp. BSNL prepaid roaming also needs a special roaming SIM collected at a BSNL customer care centre.

For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our Sri Lanka eSIM costs ≈ ₹813 (12 Oct rate), about ₹163 (US$1.70) per GB, charged US$8.49. Your bank converts that US$ amount and may add a currency conversion markup.

Data plan validity starts at different moments. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” An Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage, and it expires unreimbursed if you do not travel within 30 days of booking. Our eSIM counts its days from the first connection to a Sri Lankan network, so installing at home uses up no days.

A week in Sri Lanka: roaming pack vs eSIM

Vi roamingno stated data cap · 7 days ₹3,495

Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 9 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.

Colombo airport SIM vs an eSIM bought in India

Travellers report SIM outlets in the arrivals terminal at Colombo’s Bandaranaike airport, so a Colombo (BIA) airport SIM is an option on landing. This page quotes no Sri Lanka SIM card price, ’s included, because we have not verified current ones. An eSIM bought in India is already installed when you land.

A Tripadvisor reply of 9 May 2024 says: “You can buy esims from outlets at the arrivals terminal. yes as you heard, dialog or the mobitel is best.” That is one traveller’s view, not a price reference.

The eSIM also skips the counter queue. A physical SIM needs a slot: on a phone with one slot you would remove your Indian SIM and lose OTPs on that number. A local SIM is the better choice if you need a Sri Lankan number for local calls.

Install in India, go online in Colombo

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The Sri Lanka plan’s days start at its first connection to a Sri Lankan network, so a QR code install at home uses none. In Colombo, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line only.

Check your phone on our phone list and follow the install guide. Keep your Indian SIM in its slot beside the eSIM.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs in Sri Lanka on your Indian SIM

Bank OTPs come as SMS to your Indian number, which our data-only Sri Lanka eSIM cannot receive. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with its data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you in Sri Lanka.

and Vi prepaid list a ₹118 option for 28 days with free incoming SMS, no roaming pack needed (12 Oct 2026; Airtel T&C, Vi T&C). On Jio, check the MyJio app. The OTP guide has the steps.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Sri Lanka?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Sri Lanka as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Dialog and Hutchison; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹289 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹821 (US$8.49).

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Can an Indian SIM work in Sri Lanka?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Jio, Airtel and Vi sell roaming packs that cover Sri Lanka; the short-trip packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹2,499 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Without a pack, Airtel prepaid data is barred and Vi keeps mobile data off. BSNL lists a voice tariff only.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Sri Lanka?

No. A data-only eSIM installed in India gives you data on landing. Buy a local SIM only if you need a Sri Lankan number, and keep your Indian SIM for OTPs.

Does the eSIM validity start when I install it in India?

No. The days count from the first connection to a Sri Lankan network, so you can install at home on Wi-Fi. An Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on abroad; a Jio pack starts at first use.

eSIM or roaming pack for Sri Lanka?

It depends on calls and on your phone. First check that your phone supports eSIM. Then choose the days before the GB. Keep your Indian SIM for OTPs. If you need calls on your Indian number, an operator pack fits better than a data-only eSIM.

Can I use WhatsApp and get OTPs with a Sri Lanka eSIM?

WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.
