Japan SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, pocket Wi-Fi, local SIM or eSIM
Indian travellers have four ways to get data in Japan: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack, a Japan SIM card (the Japan tourist SIM), a rented pocket Wi-Fi, or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our Japan eSIM is data-only: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹289 (9 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.
Japan eSIM or SIM card: what Indian travellers need
You need mobile data in Japan, not a Japanese phone number. Maps, train apps and translation run on data, which an eSIM supplies from the moment you land. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone too, because bank OTPs still arrive on that number.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹192 US$1.99 by card; from ≈ ₹97 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 248,168 departures of Indian nationals to Japan in 2025, up from 181,029 in 2024: growth of 37% (our derivation). Our plan runs on the SoftBank and au (KDDI) 5G networks, with service nationwide from Hokkaido to Okinawa. NTT Docomo is not among its networks. The plan includes no calls and no SMS. If Japan is one stop on a longer Asia trip, see the other country guides.

Charged US$1.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.
Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Japan vs this eSIM
Jio, Airtel and Vi all sell roaming packs that cover Japan. The six packs below cost ₹951 to ₹5,195 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not. Vi’s “unlimited” Ultra packs are capped at 2–5 GB in Japan.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data | Days | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB | 10 | about ₹238 |
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹1,551 | 8 GB | 14 | about ₹194 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹998 | 4 GB | 5 | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹1,298 | 6 GB | 10 | about ₹216 |
| Vi Ultra (non-UL zone) | ₹3,495 | 2 GB | 7 | about ₹1,748 |
| Vi Ultra (non-UL zone) | ₹5,195 | 5 GB | 14 | about ₹1,039 |
Source: operator documents (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026. Airtel’s own FAQ page still shows older prices (₹898 and ₹1,198); the current T&C list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Vi sells its Ultra packs as unlimited only in a “UL” zone of 40 countries. Japan sits in the other zone, of 101 countries, so the ₹3,495 pack gives 2 GB there and the ₹5,195 pack 5 GB. Vi’s voice-only packs (₹495 for 3 days, ₹756 for 7 days) exclude Japan.
For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our Japan eSIM costs ≈ ₹918 (9 Oct rate), about ₹184 (US$1.90) per GB, charged US$9.49; your bank may add a foreign-transaction markup. The pack wins when you need calls on your Indian number: Airtel’s ₹998 pack includes 150 minutes, while our plan includes none. Data plan validity on our eSIM counts from the first connection to a Japanese network, so installing it at home uses up no days.
Some postpaid and annual plans now bundle a few days of roaming — check your plan in the Airtel or Vi app before you travel.
Pocket Wi-Fi rental vs an eSIM
A rented pocket Wi-Fi router gives a group one shared connection, while an eSIM gives each phone its own. The router has to be collected and returned, and it needs charging. An eSIM bought in India needs none of that. This page quotes no rental rates because we have not verified current ones.
Take a family of four. One router covers every phone only while the family stays together; if two of you split off for a day, one group has no data. Four eSIM plans keep everyone online. Sharing one plan through a hotspot draws on that plan’s single data allowance.
A physical Japan SIM card needs a free slot. On a phone with one physical slot you would remove your Indian SIM and lose OTPs on that number. An eSIM leaves the slot untouched. Japan verifies identity before it sells a voice line, and this page quotes no Japan SIM card price because we have not verified current ones. China also checks identity before it issues a local line; if China is on your route, the China guide covers that leg.
How to choose an eSIM for Japan
Choose by days first, then by GB. For a week, 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹289 (9 Oct rate); for two weeks, 2 GB over 15 days costs ≈ ₹628 (9 Oct rate); for a month, 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹918 (9 Oct rate). The ₹ figures are estimates at the day’s rate; every size is on the Japan eSIM page.
Four checks decide the rest. Does your phone support eSIM? The phone list names supported models. Do you need Indian-number calls, which points to an operator pack? Will you run maps and video calls all day? An unlimited plan fits that use: 7 days costs ≈ ₹2,321 (9 Oct rate), with speed dropping to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Do you need the Indian SIM for OTPs?
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The QR code install takes place on home Wi-Fi with the code you receive after payment, and the install guide covers iPhone and Android. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs in Japan: your Indian SIM stays the SMS line
In Japan, your bank still sends OTPs by SMS to the Indian number, which our Japan eSIM does not carry. So the Indian SIM stays in the phone as the second line, its mobile data off, for every day of the trip. The eSIM, on SoftBank or au (KDDI), handles maps, train apps and WhatsApp.
Vi’s ₹495 and ₹756 voice-only packs exclude Japan, so Vi users should confirm SMS delivery in the Vi app. Airtel’s T&C, as we read them on 12 Oct 2026, let prepaid users add the ₹118 IR activation: 28 days of free incoming SMS, enough for a 15-day plan, provided the base pack is active. Jio users should look in the MyJio app. Some OTPs may still fail to arrive in Japan; the OTP guide for dual-SIM phones walks through the settings.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Japan?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Japan as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Softbank and KDDI; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹289 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹918 (US$9.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,321 (US$23.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Is it worth getting an eSIM for Japan?
Yes, if you want data on landing without a counter queue or a rented router. A data-only eSIM installed in India connects when you reach Japan. Take an operator pack instead if you need calls on your Indian number.
Will my Indian SIM work in Japan?
A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Airtel bars prepaid data abroad without one, and Vi keeps mobile data off. The six packs shown here cost ₹951 to ₹5,195 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Vi’s Ultra packs give 2–5 GB in Japan, not unlimited data.
Do I need a Japan SIM card or a pocket Wi-Fi?
Not for data. An eSIM bought in India covers one phone without a slot or a return. A pocket Wi-Fi suits a group that stays together. A physical Japan SIM card needs a free slot, so on a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM.
Can I use WhatsApp and get OTPs with a Japan eSIM?
WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check your model on our eSIM phone list before you buy, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone’s SIM settings.
How do I install the Japan eSIM before I fly?
At home on Wi-Fi, open your phone’s SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The plan connects when you land in Japan.
