Kenya SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Jio sells no data pack for Kenya; only its Global Pack balance, spent at standard roaming rates, lists the country.
Airtel’s ₹998 and ₹1,298 prepaid packs and Vi’s ₹1,495 Budget pack do cover Kenya (as listed on 12 Oct 2026). A data-only eSIM for Kenya installed in India starts at ≈ ₹574 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$5.99 by card.

Kenya eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
What a Kenya trip needs from your phone is data: maps between parks, ride-hailing in Nairobi, WhatsApp with your safari driver. A Kenyan number is optional. Our Kenya eSIM supplies the data while your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank SMS, so a Kenya SIM card earns its place only when local calls matter.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹695 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹216 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Data is fixed per pack; check that the pack covers Kenya |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹574 US$5.99 by card; from ≈ ₹431 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 87,967 departures of Indian nationals to Kenya in 2025. Our guides by country cover the rest of an Africa route.
Our Kenya plans use one of the local networks, Safaricom, on 4G, with data and no calls or SMS. We hold no coverage data for the national parks, so we promise no signal on a game drive.

Jio has no data pack for Kenya: what Airtel and Vi offer
Kenya is on none of Jio’s lists with data: not the 100- or 75-country packs, the World Pack or the data packs. Only Jio’s Global Pack names it, a balance spent at standard rates. South Africa at least gets the World Pack and the data packs.
Airtel and Vi sell real packs for Kenya, and the four rows in our table cost ₹998 to ₹1,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio Global Pack (balance, not a data pack) | ₹1,101 | ₹933.05 balance · 28 days | standard roaming rates · 5 ISD SMS | no GB figure |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Budget (Set 1 countries) | ₹1,495 | 2 GB · 15 days | 200 min | about ₹748 |
Source: the operator document in each row, checked on 12 Oct 2026; ≈ ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026, and its FAQ page still lists older prices. Airtel prices one pack set for all covered countries; the cheapest is ₹698 for 1 GB over a day. Vi’s ₹3,495 Ultra gives 2 GB and 200 minutes for 7 days in Kenya, which is outside Vi’s prepaid unlimited zone. Vi’s postpaid terms put Kenya in their unlimited Set 1, but whether that country table is current is unconfirmed. Sources: Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C.
Our Kenya plan with 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate), about ₹536 (US$5.60) per GB, charged US$27.99. If an Airtel row costs less per GB on the day you buy and 4 to 6 GB covers the trip, the Airtel pack is the better choice. It also keeps calls on your Indian number.
Data plan validity starts differently. An Airtel prepaid pack can be booked up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Its validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. Our plan counts from its first connection to a Kenyan network. Without any pack, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Jio’s packs for other countries are on our Jio roaming page.

A week in Kenya: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
A safari week: five plans, no unlimited
Our Kenya catalogue has five plans and no unlimited data option: 1 GB for 7 days, 2 GB for 15 days, and 3, 5 or 10 GB for 30 days. A safari week therefore needs a size, not a length. Any Wi-Fi you use lowers the figure; video calls home raise it.
At 0.3 GB a day a week uses about 2.1 GB; at 0.8 GB a day, about 5.6 GB (our calculation, profiles from the data guide). The first fits the 3 GB plan at ≈ ₹1,867 (12 Oct rate), the second the 10 GB plan at ≈ ₹4,309 (12 Oct rate). A heavy week at 1.7 GB a day, about 11.9 GB, outgrows the largest plan; the Kenya plan can be topped up online.
A safari that crosses into Tanzania needs a plan listing both countries: our Africa plan and the Global plan do. For 5 GB over 30 days they cost ≈ ₹3,926 (12 Oct rate) and ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate), against ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate) for Kenya alone (12 Oct 2026). Both need a manual access point name on Android, and the Global line should stay off until you land abroad.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM set up in India
A Kenya tourist SIM, bought as a local SIM on arrival, gives you a Kenyan number for calls with drivers and lodges. Identity is checked before a local line is issued. A physical Kenya SIM card also needs a free slot: on a single-slot phone the Indian SIM comes out, and your OTPs go with it.
We quote no Kenya SIM card price, as we have not verified current ones, and no plan is the best eSIM for Kenya on every trip. Set the eSIM up at home instead. Check the eSIM phone list, buy on the Kenya eSIM page and do the QR code install on Wi-Fi. Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad, and the Kenya plan sets its access point name itself.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Kenya
OTPs from Indian banks reach your Indian number as SMS. The Kenya eSIM is data-only and has no SMS, so it never receives them. Keep the Indian SIM switched on as a second line with its mobile data off, and confirm with your operator before the trip that SMS reaches you in Kenya on your plan.
Incoming SMS alone costs ₹118 for 28 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026:
Airtel’s prepaid IR activation “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack, and Vi sells an incoming-SMS pack at the same price. Jio users can check incoming SMS in the MyJio app. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. The OTP guide covers the dual-SIM steps.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Kenya?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Kenya as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Safaricom; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹574 (US$5.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹2,681 (US$27.99).
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in Kenya?
An
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Jio sells no data pack for Kenya.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in Kenya?
No, unless you need a Kenyan number. A data eSIM installed in India connects on landing, while a local SIM needs a free slot in your phone.
When do the days on a Kenya eSIM start?
From its first connection to a Kenyan network. Installing it in India before the flight uses no days.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Kenya eSIM?
WhatsApp chats use the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which this eSIM cannot receive, so keep that SIM in the phone.
Does Jio international roaming work in Kenya?
Only through the Global Pack, a ₹1,101 balance spent at standard roaming rates (12 Oct 2026). Kenya is on none of Jio’s packs with data.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Look your model up on our eSIM phone list, and check its SIM settings for an option to add an eSIM.
