Malaysia SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
For data in Malaysia you can add a Jio,
Airtel or Vi roaming pack to your Indian SIM, buy a Malaysia SIM card after landing, or install a travel eSIM at home before the flight. Our Malaysia eSIM carries data only and starts at ≈ ₹191 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$1.99 by card.

Malaysia eSIM or tourist SIM: what you need
Most trips to Malaysia need mobile data, not a Malaysian phone number: maps and WhatsApp run on data. An eSIM for Malaysia delivers that data from the moment you land at KLIA, while your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. A local number matters only if people in Malaysia must call you.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹192 US$1.99 by card; from ≈ ₹97 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 867,126 departures of Indian nationals to Malaysia in 2025, up from 765,344 in 2024. That is about 13% more (our derivation from the 2025 dashboard and the 2024 Compendium). Leisure and business trips made up 89.92% of the 2025 departures.
Our plan runs on
Maxis, and it does not stop at the peninsula: the islands of Penang and Langkawi and the Borneo states of Sabah and Sarawak are included. A Kuala Lumpur week with a side trip to Kota Kinabalu needs one eSIM, not two. The plan has no calls and no SMS. Going on to Singapore? The Singapore guide covers that leg.
Pick by trip length first. For two weeks, the 15-day plan with 2 GB costs ≈ ₹622 (12 Oct rate). If you stream a lot, the unlimited data plan for 7 days costs ≈ ₹2,489 (12 Oct rate), and its speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. The data advisor on the Malaysia eSIM page turns your days into a GB figure.
eSIM for Malaysia: most chosen plans
Charged US$1.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Price ÷ days, at the market rate of 9 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Malaysia vs this eSIM
All three Indian operators sell roaming packs that cover Malaysia. The five short-trip packs below cost ₹589 to ₹1,899 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB).
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (75 countries) | ₹589 | 1 GB · 1 day | 100 min incl. incoming · 20 SMS | about ₹589 |
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi South Asia | ₹1,899 | 1 GB/day (5 GB) · 5 days | 250 min | about ₹380 |
Source: the operator document (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026; its FAQ page still shows older prices (₹898 and ₹1,198), and the current T&C list ₹998 and ₹1,298. Vi’s prepaid terms add: “IR packs are not applicable for customers in J&K, Assam and North East”.
Set against these rows, 5 GB over 30 days on our eSIM costs ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate), about ₹192 (US$2.00) per GB, charged US$9.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies. A pack is the better buy when you need to call home on your Indian number:
Airtel’s ₹998 pack carries 150 minutes and Vi’s ₹1,899 pack 250 minutes, while our plan has none.
On a 4 to 7-day trip to Kuala Lumpur or Langkawi, when the clock starts matters as much as the GB. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel counts a prepaid pack from the moment your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage, and it calculates prepaid validity in IST, not Malaysian time. Its 5-day pack ends two days before a 7-day trip does; the 10-day pack covers the week.
Book an Airtel prepaid pack no more than 30 days before you fly, because an unused one expires without reimbursement. Our eSIM’s days begin at its first connection to a Malaysian network, so an install at home costs no days.
If you travel without a pack, two of the three operators keep your data off: Airtel bars prepaid data “to avoid any accidental usage”, and Vi’s RoamSafe leaves mobile data switched off. On Tripadvisor, an undated forum thread asks: “Does Jio international roaming work in Malaysia especially in Langkawi ??” That is one traveller’s question, not a price reference.
A week in Malaysia: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 9 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
KLIA tourist SIM vs an eSIM bought in India
A Malaysia tourist SIM is a physical card from a local operator such as
Maxis, CelcomDigi or U Mobile, and many visitors look for a KLIA tourist SIM at Kuala Lumpur International Airport. We quote no Malaysia SIM card price in ringgit because we have not verified current rates. An eSIM from India is already installed when you land.
The trade-off is the SIM tray. A Malaysian card takes a physical slot, so on a single-slot phone you pull out your Indian SIM, and OTPs to that number stop until you put it back. The eSIM needs no tray, provided your phone can run an eSIM and a physical SIM together.
Buy a Malaysia SIM card when you need a Malaysian number, for example when a local host or tour desk has to call you. For a Thailand or other leg, pick from our guides to other destinations.
Setting up the Malaysia eSIM before a KL or Langkawi trip
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Do it on home Wi-Fi before you fly to Malaysia: the plan’s days start only at its first connection to a Malaysian network, so a 7-day plan still has all seven days when you land.
Check the eSIM phone list first: your phone must run an eSIM next to the Indian SIM. On landing, turn on data roaming for the Malaysia line only; the same line serves a Borneo leg to Sabah or Sarawak. Screens for iPhone and Android are in the install guide.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Malaysia
Bank OTPs come by SMS to your Indian number, which our data-only Malaysia plan cannot receive. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off, and ask Jio, Airtel or Vi before you fly whether SMS reaches you in Malaysia on your plan.
OTPs alone do not need a full pack: Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation (it needs a base pack) and Vi’s ₹118 incoming-SMS pack each make incoming SMS free for 28 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs covers dual-SIM settings.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Malaysia?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Malaysia as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Maxis; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹192 (US$1.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹966 (US$9.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,514 (US$25.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can I use my Indian SIM in Malaysia?
Yes, with an international roaming pack. Jio,
Airtel and Vi all sell packs that include Malaysia; the five on this page cost ₹589 to ₹1,899 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Without a pack, Airtel prepaid lines have data barred and Vi’s RoamSafe keeps data off.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in Malaysia?
Not for data. An eSIM installed in India works from landing, so a local card is needed only if you want a Malaysian number for local calls. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone either way for bank OTPs.
When do the days on a Malaysia eSIM start?
At the first connection to a Malaysian network, not at install, so setting it up at home on Wi-Fi costs no days. By contrast, a Jio pack starts at first use. An Airtel prepaid pack starts when the phone latches on to a foreign network.
Does the Malaysia eSIM work in Langkawi, Penang and Borneo?
Yes. The plan runs on
Maxis across Peninsular Malaysia with Penang and Langkawi, and in Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. It is a data-only plan, with no calls and no SMS.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Malaysia eSIM?
WhatsApp works over the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs are SMS to your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active and confirm SMS roaming with your operator.
How do I install the Malaysia eSIM before I fly?
On home Wi-Fi, open your phone’s SIM settings and add an eSIM by scanning the QR code sent after payment. Leave the line on; it connects once you land in Malaysia.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check your model on our eSIM phone list, which shows supported models by brand, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone’s SIM settings.
