Mexico SIM card for Indian travellers: Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming, local SIM or eSIM
You have three ways to get mobile data in Mexico: a roaming pack on your Indian SIM, a Mexican SIM bought after landing, or a data eSIM for Mexico installed in India. Jio is the one operator with a pack named for this route: ₹1,555 for 12 GB over 15 days across the USA, Mexico and Canada (13 Oct 2026). Our Mexico eSIM starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card, with no calls or SMS.

Mexico eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
For maps, cabs and WhatsApp in Mexico you need mobile data, not a Mexican number. A data eSIM installed in India gives you that from the moment you land, and your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. Buy a Mexico tourist SIM only if someone must reach you on a local number.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹86 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Data is fixed per pack; check that the pack covers Mexico |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹285 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹148 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 13 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
Our Mexico plans run on Movistar, one of the local networks, on 4G, with data only: six fixed-data plans from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days, and six unlimited data plans from 3 to 30 days. The 7-day unlimited plan costs ≈ ₹2,250 (12 Oct rate), charged US$23.49, and slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule. We hold no regional coverage data for Mexico, so ask us before you rely on a remote route.
A light user at 0.3 GB a day needs about 2.1 GB a week (our calculation, profiles from the data guide). That is just over the 15-day 2 GB plan, so take the 30-day 3 GB plan at ≈ ₹813 (12 Oct rate).

Jio’s USA, Mexico and Canada pack, Airtel and Vi in Mexico
Jio’s pack text names Mexico alongside the USA, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia. The five packs below cost ₹599 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. All except Jio’s data pack add minutes on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not have.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio data pack | ₹599 | 1 GB · 7 days | no calls | about ₹599 |
| Jio “US Mexico and Canada” | ₹1,555 | 12 GB · 15 days | 150 min out · 100 SMS | about ₹130 |
| Jio “US Mexico and Canada” | ₹2,555 | 25 GB · 30 days | 250 min out · 100 SMS | about ₹102 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra (UL zone) | ₹3,495 | data printed as FREE · 7 days | unlimited calls | not applicable |
Source: the operator document in each row, checked on 13 Oct 2026; ≈ ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Both Jio US packs include free incoming calls. Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026; its FAQ page still shows older prices. Sources: Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C PDF · Vi prepaid T&C PDF.
Vi lists Mexico twice, for separate reasons. In the prepaid UL zone the ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints its data as FREE. In Budget Set 2, a separate list of cheaper packs, ₹1,495 buys 750 MB and 100 minutes over 15 days. Vi’s postpaid terms put Mexico in unlimited Set 1, and we could not confirm that this country table is current.
On 12 Oct 2026 our Mexico plan with 10 GB over 30 days cost ≈ ₹1,771 (12 Oct rate), about ₹177 (US$1.85) per GB, charged US$18.49, plus any markup your card issuer applies. For up to 15 days with 10 GB or more, Jio’s ₹1,555 pack is the better choice at about ₹130 per GB, and it carries 150 minutes on your Indian number. For a month with about 10 GB, our plan cost less than Jio’s ₹2,555 pack, which gives 25 GB.
Data plan validity starts at different moments. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” An
Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. Our plan counts from its first connection to a Mexican network. More packs: Jio roaming page.

A week in Mexico: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 13 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 13 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
USA and Mexico on one trip: one Jio pack, two eSIM plans or the Global plan
Jio’s ₹1,555 pack covers a US and Mexico trip on one 12 GB allowance for 15 days (13 Oct 2026). Our Latin America plan lists Mexico but not the USA, so the same route on eSIMs needs two country plans or the Global plan, which lists both countries.
On 12 Oct 2026 the 10 GB, 30-day rows cost ≈ ₹1,771 (12 Oct rate) for Mexico and ≈ ₹1,579 (12 Oct rate) for the USA, charged US$18.49 and US$16.49. The Global plan’s 10 GB row cost ≈ ₹4,596 (12 Oct rate), charged US$47.99, more than the two country rows added together (our addition). The Global line lists India, so keep it switched off until you land abroad; its Android access point name is manual.
For Mexico with Guatemala or Costa Rica, the Latin America plan lists all three; its 10 GB, 30-day row costs ≈ ₹3,256 (12 Oct rate), charged US$33.99. US operator packs are on the US roaming page.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India
A local SIM on arrival makes sense when you need a Mexican number for calls. A physical Mexico SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot; in a single-slot phone it pushes out your Indian SIM, and OTPs stop until you swap back. We quote no Mexico SIM card price in local currency because we have not verified one.
Setting up the Mexico eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Mexico. First find your model on the eSIM phone list, then buy on the Mexico eSIM page and finish the QR code install at home on Wi-Fi. Days count from the first connection to a Mexican network, so an early install costs none.
On arrival, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line; the Mexico plan sets its access point name automatically on iPhone and Android. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed. Other destinations: country guides.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Mexico
The Mexico eSIM carries no SMS, so the OTPs your bank sends to your Indian number cannot reach it. Leave the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with its mobile data off, and ask Jio,
Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Mexico on your plan. No page can promise that every OTP will arrive.
Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation runs 28 days at standard rates and “allows unlimited incoming SMS”; it needs an active base pack. Vi’s ₹118 standard-rates pack frees incoming SMS for 28 days. On Jio, check the MyJio app. Dual-SIM settings: OTP guide.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Mexico?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Mexico as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Movistar; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹285 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,238 (US$12.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,238 (US$23.49), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Jio SIM work in Mexico?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Mexico is on Jio’s US, Mexico and Canada pack.
Does Jio’s US pack cover Mexico?
Yes. Jio’s pack text lists the USA, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia. ₹1,555 buys 12 GB over 15 days, then up to 64 kbps, with 150 minutes out and 100 SMS (13 Oct 2026).
When do the days on a Mexico eSIM start?
On its first connection to a Mexican network. An install at home in India uses none of them.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Mexico eSIM?
WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs go by SMS to your Indian number, and this eSIM has no SMS, so leave the Indian SIM in the phone.
Is one eSIM enough for the USA and Mexico?
Not the Latin America plan, which lists Mexico but not the USA. Buy a US plan and a Mexico plan, or the Global plan, which lists both.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Find your exact model on our eSIM phone list before you pay, then look in its SIM settings for an option to add an eSIM.
