Before New Zealand, decide where your data will come from: a Jio,
Airtel or Vi roaming pack on your Indian SIM, a New Zealand SIM card bought after landing, or a travel eSIM set up in India. Our New Zealand eSIM carries data only: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.

New Zealand eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
A New Zealand holiday runs on data: maps between towns, bookings, messages home. A New Zealand number rarely matters. Our eSIM for New Zealand uses the Spark network and has no calls and no SMS, so your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. We make no promise about coverage on remote roads.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹286 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹115 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 132,754 departures of Indian nationals to New Zealand in 2025, down from 136,532 in 2024, about 3% fewer (our calculation). Leisure or business trips made up 61.55% of the 2025 departures. Our guides to other countries cover the next stop.
A 10-day trip at 0.8 GB a day, the social-media profile in our data guide, uses about 8 GB (our calculation). That points to 10 GB over 30 days at ≈ ₹1,484 (12 Oct rate). For video calls every evening, the unlimited data plan for 7 days costs ≈ ₹2,585 (12 Oct rate); after 3 GB in a day it slows to 1 Mbps. Hotspot or tethering use draws on the same allowance; our plan details state no hotspot rule.

Charged US$2.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in New Zealand vs this eSIM
New Zealand is covered by roaming packs from all three Indian operators. The five in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Here Vi is not the weak option it is in Japan or Korea: New Zealand sits in Vi’s UL zone.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹1,551 | 8 GB · 14 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 50 SMS | about ₹194 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days | ₹3,495 | data Vi prints as FREE · 7 days | unlimited calls | no per-GB figure |

For a two-week trip, Jio’s 14-day pack is the closest match: 8 GB, about ₹194 per GB. Our 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,484 (12 Oct rate), about ₹148 (US$1.55) per GB, charged US$15.49, plus any markup your card issuer applies. If your family will ring your Indian number while you drive, a pack carries those minutes.
Book an
Airtel prepaid pack no more than 30 days before you travel: if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Our eSIM’s days start at its first connection to a New Zealand network. Every Jio pack is on the Jio roaming page.

A week in New Zealand: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
Australia and New Zealand on one trip
Jio’s “US Mexico and Canada” pack is the trap on this route. Jio’s own wording is “Pack applicable in USA, Mexico, U.S.Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico & Australia only”: ₹1,555 for 15 days and 12 GB covers Sydney but not Auckland. Jio’s 100-country pack lists both countries, as do
Airtel’s packs.
For eSIMs you have three routes. One Oceania plan covers eight countries, Australia and New Zealand included, and 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,340 (12 Oct rate). Two country plans of 5 GB each cost ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate) for Australia and ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate) for New Zealand. Only the country plans offer an unlimited option. See the Oceania eSIM and the Australia guide.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India
If you were weighing a Spark travel SIM against an eSIM, note that our New Zealand plan runs on Spark’s network too. The difference is the number and the slot, not the network. We quote no New Zealand SIM card price in NZ dollars, because we have not verified current rates.
A New Zealand tourist SIM is a physical card and needs a free slot: on a single-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs. Buy one when someone in New Zealand must call or text you. No single plan is the best eSIM for New Zealand on every trip.
Setting up the New Zealand eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Use home Wi-Fi for the QR code install, scanning the code we send after payment. The plan’s days start at its first connection to a New Zealand network, and you have up to a year after purchase to install it.
Check the eSIM phone list first. Both iPhone and Android set this plan’s network themselves; screens are in the install guide.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in New Zealand
Your Indian number, not the eSIM, receives bank OTPs, because they come as SMS and our New Zealand plan carries data only. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. Ask Jio,
Airtel or Vi before you fly whether SMS reaches you in New Zealand on your plan.
Airtel’s prepaid IR activation (it needs an active base pack) and Vi’s incoming-SMS pack each cost ₹118 and make incoming SMS free for 28 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; see the OTP guide.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in New Zealand?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats New Zealand as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Spark; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹909 (US$9.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,585 (US$26.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in New Zealand?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. New Zealand is in Vi’s UL zone, so Vi’s Ultra data is not capped there.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in New Zealand?
Only if you want a New Zealand number. For maps and messages, an eSIM installed in India works from landing, on the same Spark network.
When do the days on a New Zealand eSIM start?
The data plan validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a New Zealand network. Setting it up at home on Wi-Fi uses none of its days.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a New Zealand eSIM?
WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. OTPs from your bank arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep that SIM active.
Does Jio’s US and Canada pack work in New Zealand?
No. Jio’s description lists the USA, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia only. Its 100-country pack lists New Zealand.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Find your model on our eSIM phone list; if it is not listed, treat the answer as no.
