Sydney harbour at golden hour: set up your Australia eSIM at home before the flight.

Indian travellers have three ways to get data in Australia: a Jio, or Vi roaming pack, an Australia SIM card (the Australia tourist SIM), or a travel eSIM for Australia installed before the flight. Our Australia eSIM is data-only and starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.

Australia eSIM or tourist SIM: what Indian travellers need

You need mobile data in Australia, not an Australian phone number. Maps and messaging run on data, which an eSIM supplies after landing. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as well, because bank OTPs still arrive on that number.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 674,798 departures of Indian nationals to Australia in 2025. In our catalogue on 12 Oct 2026, every Australia plan runs on and carries data only: it includes no calls and no SMS. An Australia SIM card is a physical card you buy after you land, and it needs a free slot in your phone. This page names no Australian SIM seller and quotes no Australia SIM card price, because we have not verified current ones. Scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi to install the eSIM; the data plan validity starts only at the first connection. Travelling on from Australia? Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Australia vs this eSIM

Jio’s “US Mexico and Canada” pack also works in Australia, though its name does not say so. Jio’s pack text reads: “Pack applicable in USA, Mexico, U.S.Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico & Australia only.” The five packs below cost ₹998 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB).

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Source: operator documents (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. ’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026. The Jio ₹1,555 pack bundles 150 outgoing minutes and the ₹2,555 pack 250, with free incoming calls on both. Jio also lists a ₹3,455 pack with 40 GB over 35 days and 250 minutes, about ₹86 per GB. Vi lists Australia in its prepaid UL zone, and the Ultra row also bundles calls.

For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our Australia eSIM costs ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate), about ₹182 (US$1.90) per GB, charged US$9.49. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

The pack wins on a long stay or when you need calls on your Indian number. Jio’s 25 GB over 30 days works out at about ₹102 per GB and keeps your own number working. The eSIM wins on a short trip when you need only data: you pick 1 GB or 2 GB instead of a pack built around minutes. If the trip continues to New Zealand, note that Jio’s ₹1,555 US, Mexico and Canada pack does not list it; the New Zealand guide has the packs that do.

Validity starts at different moments. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage, and you can book a pack up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Our eSIM counts its days from the first connection to an Australian network, so installing it at home uses up no days. For heavy use, our Australia unlimited data plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Jio’s rules are set out on the Jio roaming page.

Older phones and BSNL: the 2G/3G switch-off in Australia

BSNL’s notice reads: “BSNL services in Australia and Sweden are impacted by the 2G/3G sunset.” If your line is on BSNL, check that notice before you rely on it in Australia. BSNL prepaid roaming also needs a special international roaming SIM, which BSNL hands out at its Customer Care Centres.

Jio states that some regions “have fully retired legacy 2G and 3G networks, requiring 4G/VoLTE or 5G compatible devices.” The sentence names the US as its example, not Australia. Jio also states that international roaming does not work on JioFi and JioPhone devices. An older phone without 4G calling may lose voice on an operator pack. A data-only eSIM does not carry calls at all, so it avoids that problem and needs a phone that supports eSIM. Check yours on the eSIM phone list.

Students and parents visiting family

For a stay of months, compare Jio’s ₹2,555 (30 days) and ₹3,455 (35 days) packs with a 30-day eSIM plan. According to The PIE News, a Rajya Sabha reply of 4 Dec 2025 counted 196,108 Indian students in Australia on 1 Jan 2025, 138,579 of them in higher education. The government PDF did not open for us.

Parents visiting a son or daughter mostly need data for video calls home. A plan of 5 GB for 30 days is ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate); 10 GB is ≈ ₹1,388 (12 Oct rate). Install the eSIM on the parent’s phone in India on home Wi-Fi. It connects when they land.

Bank OTPs while data runs on the eSIM

Bank OTPs come by SMS to your Indian number, and our Australia eSIM is data-only, so it cannot receive them. Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. It waits for OTPs while the eSIM carries maps and WhatsApp.

On Jio or Vi, check incoming SMS in the MyJio or Vi app before you fly. ’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation “allows unlimited incoming SMS” for 28 days on top of an active base pack, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs shows the dual-SIM settings.

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Australia?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Australia as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Optus; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹909 (US$9.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,298 (US$23.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Which SIM is best for Australia?

It depends on trip length and calls. For a long stay or calls on your Indian number, Jio’s US, Mexico and Canada pack also covers Australia: ₹1,555 for 12 GB over 15 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. For a short trip that needs only data, a 1 GB or 2 GB eSIM plan avoids paying for minutes.

Will my Indian SIM work in Australia?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. BSNL says its services in Australia are impacted by the 2G/3G sunset.

Do I need an Australia SIM card if I buy an eSIM?

No. An eSIM installed in India gives you data on landing. Buy a physical SIM only if you need an Australian phone number.

Can I use WhatsApp and get OTPs with an Australia eSIM?

WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.

How do I install the Australia eSIM before I fly?

At home on Wi-Fi, open your phone’s SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The plan connects when you land in Australia.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your model on our eSIM phone list before you buy, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone’s SIM settings.
