Azerbaijan SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Baku's old city at dusk: plan your Azerbaijan data before the flight.

For mobile data in Azerbaijan, a Jio or roaming pack costs less per GB than most of our plans, an Azerbaijan SIM card bought after landing gives you a local number, and a data eSIM installed in India suits longer stays and Vi users. Jio’s ₹951 pack gives 4 GB over 10 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

Azerbaijan eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

An eSIM for Azerbaijan installed in India gives you data on landing: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹382 (12 Oct rate), charged US$3.99 by card. It runs on two host networks, Azercell on 5G and Nar Mobile on 3G, with no calls and no SMS.

Nar Mobile is listed at 3G only, so data on that network runs slower than on Azercell’s 5G. The storefront has twelve plans; six are unlimited data, from 3 to 30 days, and slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day.

An Azerbaijan tourist SIM is a physical card that needs a free SIM slot. We have not verified current local offers, so we quote no Azerbaijan SIM card price in manat. Indian nationals made 97,323 departures to Azerbaijan in 2025, down from 156,882 in 2024: about −38% by our calculation from Ministry of Tourism tables. Other destinations are covered in our international SIM guides by country.

The data plan validity starts at the first connection to a network in Azerbaijan, so installing at home uses no days. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Azerbaijan vs this eSIM

Jio lists Azerbaijan on its 100-country and 75-country packs, the World Pack and the data packs; the data-pack list spells it “Azerbijan”. covers it in its single pack set, and Vi in the prepaid non-UL zone and Budget Set 2, the same Budget set as Kazakhstan. The five packs below cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Per GB, our 5 GB row for 30 days costs about ₹326 (US$3.40), charged US$16.99. On 12 Oct 2026 Jio and Airtel beat it; only our 20 GB row (about ₹192 (US$2.00) per GB) undercut them. Both Vi rows cost several times more per GB. With Jio or Airtel and a trip of 10 days or less, take the pack: it also carries minutes. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Going on to Georgia changes the picture for Jio users: Georgia is on none of Jio’s lists, so there is no Jio pack to buy for the Tbilisi leg (Georgia guide). Airtel’s pack set and Vi’s non-UL zone list both countries; the Jio roaming guide sets out Jio’s pack families.

Vi roaming12 × 500 MB · 5 days ₹9,060

Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.

Baku with Georgia on the same trip: two plans or the Global plan

Our Europe plan lists Georgia but not Azerbaijan, so the only plan of ours that covers both is the Global plan. On 12 Oct 2026 two country plans cost less in total, with more data: 3 GB in Azerbaijan (≈ ₹1,148 (12 Oct rate)) plus 3 GB in Georgia (≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate)) against 5 GB on the Global plan at ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate).

The Global plan’s case is one install and one data pool across the border; the Global eSIM page and the Global SIM guide cover it. It needs its APN entered by hand on Android, and its country list includes India, so keep the line switched off until you land abroad. Each country plan sets its APN automatically.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM set up in India

A local SIM on arrival gives you an Azerbaijani number, but on a one-slot phone it takes the place of your Indian SIM. An eSIM set up in India needs no slot and keeps the Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs.

For a week of social media and photos, the data guide uses 0.8 GB a day, about 5.6 GB (our calculation). The 10 GB row for 30 days covers that at ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate).

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Azerbaijan

The Azerbaijan eSIM is data-only: it has no phone number, so bank OTPs sent by SMS still land on your Indian SIM. Keep that SIM in the phone as the second line and ask Jio, or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Azerbaijan on your plan.

No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers dual-SIM settings.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Azerbaijan?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Azerbaijan as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Azercell and Nar Mobile; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹382 (US$3.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,627 (US$16.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,734 (US$38.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Azerbaijan?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Azerbaijan?

Only if you need an Azerbaijani number. A roaming pack or an eSIM installed in India covers data.

When do the days on an Azerbaijan eSIM start?

On its first connection to a network in Azerbaijan. Installing it at home before the flight uses none of the plan’s days.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with an Azerbaijan eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run over the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs come by SMS to your Indian number, which the data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active.

Can one eSIM cover Georgia and Azerbaijan?

Yes: our Global plan lists both. On 12 Oct 2026, though, a 3 GB Azerbaijan plan plus a 3 GB Georgia plan cost less than its 5 GB row.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check the exact model on our eSIM phone list; Indian versions of a phone can differ from those sold abroad.
