Kazakhstan eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

On a Kazakhstan trip, data does the work: maps, ride-hailing apps and WhatsApp messages all run on it. A Kazakh number matters only if someone in Kazakhstan must call you. Our Kazakhstan eSIM carries data alone and leaves your Indian SIM in the phone as a second line for bank OTPs.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 90,347 departures to Kazakhstan in 2025, against 92,727 in 2024: about 2.6% fewer (our calculation). Our destination guides for Indian travellers cover other countries.

The plan uses two local networks: Kcell, listed as 5G in our catalogue, and Tele2, listed as 3G. We hold no coverage map for either. Of our regional plans, only the Global plan lists Kazakhstan: 5 GB over 30 days cost ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate) there on 12 Oct 2026, against ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate) here. On Android it needs a manual access point name; keep its line off until you land abroad.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Kazakhstan vs this eSIM

Each of the three operators sells a prepaid pack that lists Kazakhstan. In our table the five packs cost ₹589 to ₹1,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and all five bundle minutes on your Indian number. Vi’s Budget pack gives the least data: Kazakhstan sits in its second Budget set, where ₹1,495 buys 750 MB. Azerbaijan sits in the same set.

Data plan validity is counted differently. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage; our plan, at its first connection to a Kazakh network. Almaty for a week: which plan length

Plan length is the easy part: every Kazakhstan plan with 3 GB or more runs for 30 days, so a week in Almaty is sized by gigabytes. A light week uses about 2.1 GB at 0.3 GB a day, and a week of maps and social media about 5.6 GB at 0.8 GB a day (our calculation).

Both profiles come from our data guide. The 1 GB and 2 GB plans run out before even the light week ends. For 2.1 GB, take 3 GB at ≈ ₹765 (12 Oct rate); for 5.6 GB, 10 GB at ≈ ₹1,532 (12 Oct rate). A heavy week, about 11.9 GB at 1.7 GB a day, needs 20 GB at ≈ ₹2,489 (12 Oct rate).

The 7-day unlimited data plan costs ≈ ₹2,537 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot use draws on the same allowance; our plan details state no hotspot rule.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM set up in India

A Kazakhstan tourist SIM bought after landing gives you a local number, which our data-only eSIM cannot. But a physical Kazakhstan SIM card needs a free slot: on a single-slot phone your Indian SIM comes out and its OTPs stop. We quote no Kazakhstan SIM card price because we have not verified current ones.

No plan is the best eSIM for Kazakhstan on every trip; pick by gigabytes. Check the eSIM phone list, buy on the Kazakhstan eSIM page and do the QR code install on home Wi-Fi. Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The access point name sets itself on iPhone and Android.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Kazakhstan

Your bank sends OTPs by SMS to your Indian number. The Kazakhstan plan is data-only, with no SMS, so those messages cannot reach it. Leave the Indian SIM active as a second line with its mobile data switched off. Before you fly, ask Jio, Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Kazakhstan on your plan.

Two ₹118 options cover incoming SMS for 28 days (12 Oct 2026): Airtel’s prepaid IR activation, which “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack, and Vi’s incoming-SMS pack. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; see the OTP guide.

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Kazakhstan?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Kazakhstan as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find KCELL and Tele 2; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹957 (US$9.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,537 (US$26.49), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
