Cyprus eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 17,914 departures of Indian nationals to Cyprus in 2025. On the island, maps, taxis and chats need mobile data rather than a local number. A Cyprus eSIM installed in India covers that from arrival while your Indian SIM stays in for OTPs; a Cyprus tourist SIM adds value only if you need a Cypriot number. Our Cyprus plans use PrimeTel, one of the local networks, on 4G, with data only. You get six fixed-data plans, from 1 GB for 7 days to 20 GB for 30 days, and six unlimited data plans from 3 to 30 days. Seven days of unlimited data cost ≈ ₹1,436 (12 Oct rate), charged US$14.99, with speed cut to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule. Our catalogue has no coverage map for the island, so this page does not promise one SIM for all of Cyprus.

Jio and Airtel packs in Cyprus, and why Vi prepaid has none

Cyprus is on Jio’s 100-country list and on Airtel’s single country list. Vi’s prepaid T&C list no pack for Cyprus; its postpaid table lists Cyprus in Set 2, and we could not confirm that this table is current. The four packs below cost ₹951 to ₹1,551 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.

The operator’s own document is linked in each row and was read on 13 Oct 2026; ≈ ₹ per GB divides price by data (our derivation). Each pack adds minutes on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM lacks. Airtel’s T&C date from 24 Sep 2026 and its FAQ page still shows older prices; Airtel’s one pack set covers every listed country, the cheapest being ₹698 for 1 GB over a day.

On a Vi prepaid SIM there is no pack to buy for Cyprus, and without a pack Vi keeps mobile data off. Ask Vi whether standard-rate roaming works in Cyprus on your plan before you count on it.

On 12 Oct 2026 our 5 GB plan for 30 days cost ≈ ₹765 (12 Oct rate), about ₹153 (US$1.60) per GB, charged US$7.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies. That was below Jio’s ₹951 for 4 GB over 10 days, with 20 more days of validity. Take Jio’s or Airtel’s pack instead when you need minutes on your Indian number.

Data plan validity differs too. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid packs can be booked up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement, and validity starts when the phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. Cyprus plan or the Europe plan for Cyprus plus Greece

On 12 Oct 2026 the Cyprus plan cost less than the Europe plan on every row the two share, so it suits a Cyprus-only trip. For a route through Cyprus and Greece, the Europe plan lists both among its 41 countries, so one eSIM serves both legs.

On 12 Oct 2026 the 10 GB, 30-day row was ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate) on the Europe plan, charged US$18.99. The same row cost ≈ ₹1,053 (12 Oct rate) on the Cyprus plan and ≈ ₹1,244 (12 Oct rate) on the Greece plan, charged US$10.99 and US$12.99. Together those two came to more than the Europe row (our addition). Android users enter the Europe plan’s access point name by hand; the Cyprus plan sets it automatically. Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

Choose a local SIM on arrival if you will call Cypriot numbers through a long stay. A physical Cyprus SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot, so a single-slot phone loses your Indian SIM, and its OTPs, until you swap back. We give no Cyprus SIM card price in euros because we have not verified one.

Setting up the Cyprus eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Cyprus. Check that your phone is on the eSIM phone list, buy on the Cyprus eSIM page, and run the QR code install over home Wi-Fi. Nothing is counted until the first connection to a Cypriot network, so installing early costs no days.

On landing, enable data roaming for the eSIM line. The Cyprus plan configures its access point name on its own, on iPhone and on Android. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Cyprus

The Cyprus eSIM has no SMS, so bank OTPs sent to your Indian number cannot land on it. Keep that SIM in the phone as a second line, mobile data off, and confirm with your operator that SMS reaches you in Cyprus on your plan. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation covers 28 days at standard rates, “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack. Jio users can check incoming SMS in the MyJio app. The OTP guide explains the dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Cyprus?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Cyprus as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find PrimeTel; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹285 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹761 (US$7.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,428 (US$14.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
