Norway SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Steep fjord walls and a small ferry on still water in western Norway
A western Norway fjord: coverage between villages is worth checking first.

Indian visitors to Norway have three data options: a roaming pack from Jio, or Vi, a Norwegian SIM card after arrival, or a data eSIM set up in India before take-off. Our Norway eSIM starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.

Norway eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

Ferry timetables, train bookings, offline-map downloads and messages are what a Norway trip uses data for; a Norwegian number rarely matters. Our Norway eSIM runs on Telia’s 5G network from arrival, with your Indian SIM left in the phone for OTPs. A Norway SIM card is worth it only when someone there must ring you. For the rest of a Nordic route, see our guides to other countries.

Coverage in the far north, on remote fjords and on mountain roads is not something we promise; Telia’s own network decides there, so download offline maps before long drives.

The best eSIM for Norway is the smallest row that lasts the trip. Seven days of unlimited data cost ≈ ₹1,436 (12 Oct rate) and slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Norway vs this eSIM

Jio, and Vi all cover Norway, and each pack in the table gives you minutes on your Indian number as well as data. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Norway is in Vi’s UL zone, so the ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints its data as FREE here.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Source: the operator document (Jio plan list · Airtel T&C PDF · Vi prepaid T&C PDF), checked on 13 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.

For a long stay, compare like with like. Jio’s ₹2,851 pack gives 12 GB, 150 minutes each way and 100 SMS over 30 days. On our Norway plan, 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,148 (12 Oct rate), about ₹115 (US$1.20) per GB, charged US$11.99, and 20 GB costs ≈ ₹1,340 (12 Oct rate), plus any markup your card issuer applies. Two weeks at 0.8 GB a day use about 11.2 GB (our calculation): too much for the 10 GB row, comfortably inside the 20 GB one.

Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

Norway plan or the Europe plan for a Nordic trip

A Norway-only trip needs only the Norway plan. For a loop through Oslo, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Helsinki, the Europe plan lists Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland among its 41 countries, so one eSIM covers all four. On 12 Oct 2026, 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate) on the Norway plan and ≈ ₹1,148 (12 Oct rate) on the Europe plan.

The Europe plan asks for its access point name on Android, typed in from your order e-mail; the Norway plan sets everything itself.

Vi users see the allowance change at one border. Norway, Denmark and Sweden are in Vi’s UL zone, where Ultra data is printed as FREE; Finland is non-UL, and the same ₹3,495 pack gives 2 GB there. The Europe SIM card guide, the Europe eSIM page and the Europe roaming comparison compare the regional options.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A Norwegian SIM card makes sense for a local number, not for data. It needs a free slot, and on a single-slot phone it pushes your Indian SIM out, so bank OTPs stop until you swap back. An eSIM bought in India needs no slot, and it can sit installed for weeks without using any of its days.

We quote no Norway SIM card price in kroner, because we have not verified current local rates. The eSIM price is fixed at checkout in US dollars, and you see it as ≈ ₹ before you pay.

Setting up the Norway eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. On home Wi-Fi, scan the QR code from your order e-mail and switch the line off until the flight; data plan validity starts at the first connection to a Norwegian network. iPhone and Android pick up the network settings without any typing.

Look up your phone on the eSIM phone list before you pay; the install guide shows each screen.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Norway

Indian banks send OTPs as SMS to your Indian number, and our Norway plan is data-only, so it cannot receive them. Leave the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off, and ask Jio, or Vi before you go whether SMS reaches you in Norway on your plan.

No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. The OTP guide has the dual-SIM settings, and how card payments work explains the dollar charge.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Norway?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Norway as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Telia; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹285 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹857 (US$8.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,428 (US$14.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Norway?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Norway?

Only for a Norwegian number. For data, an eSIM installed in India works from arrival on Telia’s network, and it needs no free slot, unlike a physical card that would push out your Indian SIM on a single-slot phone.

When do the days on a Norway eSIM start?

From the first connection to a Norwegian network; an install at home on Wi-Fi uses none of them. Jio’s packs begin at first usage, and Airtel’s prepaid packs when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Norway eSIM?

WhatsApp works on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which our data-only Norway plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM on as a second line with its data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Is one eSIM enough for Norway, Sweden and Denmark?

Yes with the Europe plan, which lists all three among its 41 countries; the Norway plan works in Norway only. On Vi, all three are in the UL zone with Ultra data printed as FREE, while Finland is non-UL with 2 GB.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list before paying. The phone must run an eSIM and a physical SIM together, so the Indian SIM stays in for OTPs.
