Portugal SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Getting online in Portugal works three ways: a Jio,
Airtel or Vi roaming pack on your Indian number, a Portugal SIM card from a shop after landing, or a data eSIM installed in India before departure. Our Portugal eSIM starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.
At a glance
- Purchase QR code by e-mail · after payment
- Installation profile on your phone · up to 365 days
- Activation first network on the trip · the clock starts
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee.
Portugal eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
Lisbon trams, Porto metro tickets, maps and messages all need data, and none of them needs a Portuguese number. Our Portugal eSIM joins whichever of three 4G networks is available, MEO, NOS or
Vodafone (the Portuguese network, not Vi), from landing, while your Indian SIM keeps receiving OTPs. If Portugal is one leg of a longer trip, our SIM guides by country cover the other legs.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹285 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹67 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 13 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
Identity is checked before a local line is issued. A physical Portugal SIM card also needs a free slot, and on a single-slot phone it takes your Indian SIM out of service for OTPs until you swap back. We quote no Portugal SIM card price, because we have not verified current local rates.
The best eSIM for Portugal is the smallest row that covers your days and data. For heavy use, 7 days of unlimited data cost ≈ ₹1,436 (12 Oct rate), slowing to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.
eSIM for Portugal: most chosen plans
Charged US$2.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Portugal vs this eSIM
Portugal is on the lists of Jio,
Airtel and Vi, and every pack in the table includes minutes on your Indian number; a data eSIM includes none. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Portugal is in Vi’s UL zone, where the ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints its data as FREE.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days (UL zone) | ₹3,495 | data printed as FREE · 7 days | unlimited calls | not applicable |
| Vi prepaid Budget, Set 1 | ₹1,495 | 2 GB · 15 days | 200 min | about ₹748 |
Source: the operator document (Jio plan list · Airtel T&C PDF · Vi prepaid T&C PDF), checked on 13 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
If you will phone India often, Vi’s Ultra pack with unlimited calls or Airtel’s ₹1,298 pack with 200 minutes is the better choice, since a data eSIM carries no calls. If you only need data, 5 GB over 30 days on our Portugal plan costs ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate), about ₹134 (US$1.40) per GB, charged US$6.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies.
Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” For Airtel prepaid, the count begins once your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

A week in Portugal: roaming pack vs eSIM
1.5× cheaper5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 13 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 13 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
Lisbon, Madeira and the Azores: what the Portugal plan covers
Our Portugal plan is not limited to the mainland: its coverage note extends it to Madeira and the Azores. One eSIM therefore works in Lisbon, Funchal and Ponta Delgada without a second purchase. The note names the two island groups rather than single islands, so ask us before you count on a remote one.
A typical island add-on changes the sizing more than the plan. Ten days split between Lisbon and Madeira at about 0.8 GB a day need about 8 GB (our calculation), which the 10 GB row for 30 days covers at ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate).
On Vi’s Budget pack, Portugal is in Set 1, where ₹1,495 buys 2 GB and 200 minutes over 15 days, about ₹748 per GB (our derivation).
Spain and Portugal on one trip: country plans or the Europe plan
The Europe plan lists 41 countries, Spain and Portugal among them, so an Iberian route can run on one eSIM for Spain and Portugal. Buying the two country plans instead costs less on 12 Oct 2026, at the price of two installs and two separate data balances.
The numbers: 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate) on our Spain plan and ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate) on our Portugal plan, against ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate) for 10 GB over 30 days on the Europe plan. If 5 GB covers the whole route, the Europe 5 GB row at ≈ ₹1,148 (12 Oct rate) is the simpler buy.
Both country plans configure themselves; the Europe plan needs its access point name typed in on Android. More detail sits in the Spain guide, the Europe SIM card guide, the Europe eSIM page and the Europe roaming comparison.
Setting up the Portugal eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Scan the QR code from the order e-mail on home Wi-Fi; the plan’s days do not start until the first connection to a Portuguese network. On both iPhone and Android the network settings arrive with the eSIM, with nothing to type.
Check the eSIM phone list for your exact model, and keep the install guide open for the screens.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Portugal
Bank OTPs are sent as SMS to your Indian number, and a data-only Portugal plan cannot receive them. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone with its mobile data off so it acts as a second line, and before the trip ask Jio,
Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Portugal on your plan.
No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. See the OTP guide for dual-SIM settings and how card payments work for the card charge.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Portugal?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Portugal as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find NOS and Vodafone; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹285 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹666 (US$6.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,428 (US$14.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in Portugal?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.
Does the Portugal eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?
Yes. The Portugal plan’s coverage note extends it from the mainland to Madeira and the Azores. It names the two island groups, not single islands, so ask us before you rely on a remote one.
When do the days on a Portugal eSIM start?
When it first connects to a Portuguese network; an install at home on Wi-Fi uses no days. Jio’s packs begin at first usage, and Airtel’s prepaid packs when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Portugal eSIM?
WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, which our data-only Portugal plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active as a second line. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.
Is there one eSIM for Spain and Portugal?
Yes, the Europe plan, which lists both among 41 countries. Our Spain and Portugal plans are separate country plans, each with its own data balance. On Android the Europe plan needs its access point name entered by hand.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Look up your exact model on our eSIM phone list before buying. The phone has to run an eSIM next to a physical SIM, so your Indian SIM can stay in for OTPs.
