Switzerland SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

For Switzerland you can pay for data three ways: a Jio, or Vi roaming pack on your Indian SIM, a Swiss SIM card from a shop after landing, or a travel eSIM installed at home. Our Switzerland eSIM gives data only, with no calls or SMS: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.

Switzerland eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

A Switzerland SIM card or eSIM is mostly about data: train timetables, cable-car times, maps, messages. A Swiss number rarely matters on a holiday. Our Switzerland plans run on the Sunrise network and carry no calls or SMS, so your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. We make no promise about coverage in mountain areas. Our international SIM guides by destination cover other countries.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 162,068 departures of Indian nationals to Switzerland in 2025, against 154,822 in 2024, about 5% more (our calculation). Leisure or business made up 84.22% of those departures, a higher share than for France (79.41%), Spain (71.05%) or the Netherlands (64.16%).

Six days at 0.8 GB a day, the social-media profile in our data guide, need about 4.8 GB (our calculation), so 5 GB over 30 days at ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate) covers them. Check the per-GB figure before you size up: 5 GB works out at ₹134 (US$1.40) per GB and 10 GB at ₹177 (US$1.85). The 7-day unlimited data plan costs ≈ ₹1,436 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Switzerland vs this eSIM

Switzerland is where Vi’s Ultra pack loses its edge: the country sits in Vi’s non-UL zone, so ₹3,495 buys 2 GB for 7 days. Jio and price Switzerland like the rest of Europe. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, all with minutes on your Indian number.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Book an Airtel prepaid pack no more than 30 days before you travel: if you do not travel within 30 days, it expires with no reimbursement. Our eSIM’s data plan validity starts at its first connection to a Swiss network.

Switzerland on a Europe trip: why the Vi pack changes at the border

On a Paris–Interlaken–Milan route, Vi’s Ultra pack changes value twice. France and Italy sit in Vi’s UL zone, where Vi prints Ultra data as FREE; Switzerland does not, so the same ₹3,495 pack drops to 2 GB, about ₹1,748 per GB (our calculation). Jio’s and ’s packs list all three countries at one price. The multi-country Europe guide sets these packs against one regional eSIM.

Vi’s longer packs soften the cap only a little. The 14-day Ultra pack at ₹5,195 gives 5 GB in Switzerland, about ₹1,039 per GB, and Vi’s Budget pack, ₹1,495 for 15 days with 2 GB and 200 minutes, about ₹748 per GB.

Our Europe plan lists 41 countries, Switzerland, France, Italy and Liechtenstein among them. Ten days at 0.8 GB a day need about 8 GB: 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate) on the Europe plan, against ≈ ₹1,771 (12 Oct rate) on the Switzerland plan. See the Europe eSIM, the Europe roaming comparison, and the France and Italy guides.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A Switzerland tourist SIM is a physical card from a local operator, worth buying when a hotel, guide or friend in Switzerland must call or text you. We quote no Switzerland SIM card price in francs, because we have not verified current rates. An eSIM for Switzerland is on your phone before the flight lands in Zurich or Geneva.

Identity is checked before a local line is issued. The card also needs a free slot, and on a single-slot phone it pushes out your Indian SIM along with its OTPs.

No single plan is the best eSIM for Switzerland on every trip; days and data decide.

Setting up the Switzerland eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. On home Wi-Fi, do the QR code install with the code from your order e-mail. The Swiss plan’s days begin at its first connection to a Swiss network, and you have up to a year after purchase to install it.

Look up your phone on the eSIM phone list first. Both iPhone and Android set this plan’s network on their own; there is no access point name to type. The install guide has the screens.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Switzerland

Bank OTPs land as SMS on your Indian number, and a data-only Swiss plan has no way to receive them. Leave the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with its mobile data off. Before the trip, ask Jio, or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Switzerland on your plan.

For incoming SMS alone, Airtel’s prepaid IR activation (it needs an active base pack) and Vi’s incoming-SMS pack each cost ₹118 for 28 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Switzerland?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Switzerland as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Sunrise; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹670 (US$6.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,436 (US$14.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Switzerland?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. In Switzerland, Vi’s Ultra pack gives 2 to 5 GB, not unlimited data.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Switzerland?

For data, no: the eSIM installed in India works from landing. A Swiss card is worth it only if you need a Swiss number.

When do the days on a Switzerland eSIM start?

At its first connection to a Swiss network. Installing it at home on Wi-Fi costs no days.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Switzerland eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active.

Does my Europe eSIM work in Switzerland?

Yes. Switzerland is on our Europe plan’s list of 41 countries, so one Europe eSIM can cover Paris, Interlaken and Milan.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Look up your exact model on our eSIM phone list. If it is not listed, treat the answer as no.
