A Bavarian river town: plan data for train days across Germany.

Going to Germany, you can keep your Indian SIM on a Jio, or Vi roaming pack, buy a German SIM card after landing, or install a travel eSIM at home. Our Germany eSIM carries data only, with no calls or SMS: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.

Germany eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

A Germany SIM card or eSIM mostly has to deliver data: rail tickets, maps, messages. Our Germany plan runs on the O2 network and has no German number, no calls and no SMS. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. A local line matters if you will live in Germany, not for a two-week visit.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 458,819 departures of Indian nationals to Germany in 2025, against 421,457 in 2024, about 9% more (our calculation). Of the European countries in the ministry’s 2025 data, only the UK (1,398,540) counts more. Leisure and business made up 50.91% of the German departures. Other European routes have their own SIM guides by country.

Seven days at 0.8 GB a day, the social-media profile in our data guide, come to about 5.6 GB (our calculation), so the 5 GB plan falls short. Take 10 GB over 30 days at ≈ ₹1,244 (12 Oct rate), or the unlimited data plan for 7 days at ≈ ₹1,532 (12 Oct rate), which slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot or tethering use draws on the same allowance; our plan details state no hotspot rule.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Germany vs this eSIM

Our table holds five Jio, and Vi packs that cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Two of them last 30 days, which matters on a long stay: Jio’s ₹2,851 with 12 GB and Airtel’s ₹2,998 with 10 GB. All five include minutes on your Indian number; our eSIM has none.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Our 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,244 (12 Oct rate), about ₹125 (US$1.30) per GB, charged US$12.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies. Pick a pack if you need calls on your Indian number.

Book an Airtel prepaid pack no more than 30 days before you travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, it expires with no reimbursement. Our eSIM’s data plan validity starts at its first connection to a German network. Adding France or Italy? See the Europe guide and the Europe roaming comparison.

Students and long stays in Germany: the first weeks

Germany had 52,197 Indian students on 1 January 2025, according to a Ministry of External Affairs reply as reported by The PIE News. A data eSIM covers the first weeks until a German SIM card is in place. It has no German number, so anything that must reach a German number needs a local line.

Size the first month by daily use. At 0.3 GB a day, 30 days come to about 9 GB, and the 10 GB plan fits. At 0.8 GB a day the month needs about 24 GB (our calculation), more than the 20 GB plan holds. Take the 20 GB plan and top it up from your order page, or the unlimited 30-day plan at ≈ ₹4,309 (12 Oct rate), with the same 1 Mbps limit after 3 GB in a day. The student eSIM guide covers the arrival week.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A Germany tourist SIM is a physical card from a local operator. We quote no Germany SIM card price in euros, because we have not verified current rates. Identity is checked before a local line is issued, and the card needs a free slot: on a single-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs.

An eSIM for Germany is already on the phone when you land. No single plan is the best eSIM for Germany on every trip: the Germany plan suits a Germany-only stay, and one Europe plan covers several countries.

Setting up the Germany eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. For a QR code install, use home Wi-Fi and scan the code from your order e-mail. The plan’s days start only at its first connection to a German network, and you can install up to a year after purchase.

This plan needs one manual step on Android: you enter the access point name yourself, from your order e-mail. The APN guide shows where the setting sits. On iPhone it sets itself. Check the eSIM phone list before you pay; screens are in the install guide.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Germany

Bank OTPs come as SMS to your Indian number, and the Germany plan has no SMS, so it cannot receive them. Leave the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. Ask Jio, Airtel or Vi before you go whether SMS reaches you in Germany on your plan.

Incoming SMS for 28 days costs ₹118 with Airtel’s prepaid IR activation, which needs an active base pack, or with Vi’s incoming-SMS pack, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; see the OTP guide.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Germany?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Germany as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata/orange/orange.fr on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find O2; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹861 (US$8.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,532 (US$15.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Germany?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Germany is in Vi’s UL zone, so Vi’s Ultra data is not capped there.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Germany?

For a visit, no: the eSIM installed in India gives you data from landing. For a long stay, you will want a German number sooner or later, and that needs a local line.

When do the days on a Germany eSIM start?

When it first connects to a German network. Installing it in India on Wi-Fi uses no days.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Germany eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs arrive as SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active.

Is an eSIM enough for my first month as a student in Germany?

For data, yes: 30-day plans run from 3 GB to 20 GB, plus an unlimited plan that slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. It carries no calls or SMS, so anything sent to a German number needs a local line.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list. If it is not listed, treat the answer as no.
