Hong Kong SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Hong Kong gives you three data options from India: a Jio,
Airtel or Vi roaming pack on your own SIM, a Hong Kong SIM card bought on arrival, or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our Hong Kong eSIM is a data-only plan: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.

Hong Kong eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
On a Hong Kong stopover or holiday, data does the work: maps, ride bookings, MTR routes, messages. A local number rarely does. Our plan runs on Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT) with 5G and has no calls and no SMS, so keep your Indian SIM in the phone for bank OTPs.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹286 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹96 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
The Ministry of Tourism counted 238,476 departures of Indian nationals to Hong Kong in 2025, against 221,575 in 2024, about 8% more (our calculation). Leisure or business accounted for 78.37% of the 2025 departures. Other destinations are covered by our country-by-country guides.
A 5-day stopover at 0.8 GB a day, the social-media profile in our data guide, needs about 4 GB (our calculation). The 5 GB plan for 30 days, at ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate), covers it with room to spare. Streaming every night? The 7-day unlimited data plan costs ≈ ₹2,537 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps once you pass 3 GB in a day.

Charged US$2.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Hong Kong vs this eSIM
Hong Kong suits Vi’s Ultra pack, because it sits in Vi’s UL zone. Jio and
Airtel cover it too. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each one includes minutes on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM lacks.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Jio “East Asia, Europe and US” (100 countries) | ₹2,851 | 12 GB · 30 days | 150 min out + 150 in · 100 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days | ₹3,495 | data Vi prints as FREE · 7 days | unlimited calls | no per-GB figure |

For a 5-day stopover, Airtel’s ₹998 pack matches the trip length exactly: 4 GB and 150 minutes. Our 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate), about ₹182 (US$1.90) per GB, charged US$9.49, plus any markup your card issuer applies. If you need calls home on your Indian number, the pack carries them.
Airtel counts a prepaid pack from the moment your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage, in IST, not Hong Kong time. Our eSIM’s data plan validity starts at its first connection to a Hong Kong network. Every Jio pack, including the ₹2,851 one for a longer East Asia trip, is on the Jio roaming page.

A week in Hong Kong: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
Hong Kong with mainland China on the same trip
Crossing into Shenzhen changes the maths for Vi users. Hong Kong and Macau sit in Vi’s UL zone, but China is non-UL, so the ₹3,495 Ultra pack gives 2 GB over 7 days there, about ₹1,748 per GB (our calculation). Jio’s 100-country pack and
Airtel’s packs list all three places.
Our Hong Kong plan is sold for Hong Kong only. We make no claim that it works in mainland China or Macau; the China guide covers the mainland leg, and the Vi roaming page has every Vi zone.
One Asia plan lists Hong Kong, Macau and China among 18 places: 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate). Its list also includes India, so install it at home and keep the line switched off until you land abroad. See the Asia eSIM.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India
People who search for an HK airport tourist SIM want the same thing an eSIM gives: data from landing. A Hong Kong tourist SIM is a physical card from a local operator, and it comes with a local number. We quote no Hong Kong SIM card price in HK dollars, because we have not verified current rates.
Identity is checked before a local line is issued. The card also needs a free slot. On a phone with one slot, it displaces your Indian SIM, and your OTPs with it.
Buy a local line only when someone in Hong Kong must call or text you. No single plan is the best eSIM for Hong Kong on every trip.
Setting up the Hong Kong eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Scan the QR code from your order e-mail on home Wi-Fi: that QR code install starts nothing, because the plan’s days begin at its first connection to a Hong Kong network. You can install up to a year after purchase.
Check the eSIM phone list first. iPhone sets this plan’s network itself; on Android you type the access point name from your order e-mail (install guide).
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Hong Kong
A data-only plan cannot receive SMS, and bank OTPs travel as SMS to your Indian number. So the Indian SIM stays in the phone as a second line, with its mobile data off. Before you leave, ask Jio,
Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Hong Kong on your plan.
Airtel’s prepaid IR activation (it needs an active base pack) and Vi’s incoming-SMS pack each cost ₹118 and make incoming SMS free for 28 days, as listed on 12 Oct 2026. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; see the OTP guide.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Hong Kong?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Hong Kong as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Hong Kong Telecommunications (HKT); this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹909 (US$9.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,537 (US$26.49), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in Hong Kong?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Hong Kong is in Vi’s UL zone, so the Ultra pack’s data is not capped there.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in Hong Kong?
Not for data: an eSIM set up in India works from landing. A Hong Kong card makes sense only when you need a local number for calls or texts.
When do the days on a Hong Kong eSIM start?
On its first connection to a Hong Kong network. Installing it at home on Wi-Fi uses no days.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Hong Kong eSIM?
WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs come as SMS to your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active.
Will a Hong Kong eSIM work in mainland China?
We do not claim it does. The plan is sold for Hong Kong, and we make no promise for mainland China or Macau. For that leg, use our China guide or the Asia plan, which lists China.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check the exact model on our eSIM phone list. Apple lists some iPhones sold in Hong Kong and Macao as “Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards”, so check the SIM spec before you buy a phone there.
