Taiwan SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Mobile data in Taiwan comes from one of three places: a roaming pack on your Jio,
Airtel or Vi number, a Taiwan SIM card bought after you land, or a data eSIM you install in India before the flight. Our Taiwan eSIM starts at ≈ ₹334 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$3.49 by card.
At a glance
- Purchase QR code by e-mail · after payment
- Installation profile on your phone · up to 365 days
- Activation first network on the trip · the clock starts
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee.
Taiwan eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
In Taiwan you mostly need data: metro and rail apps, maps, translation and messages. Our Taiwan eSIM connects to the Taiwan Mobile 5G network on arrival, and your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. A Taiwanese number is useful only if someone there must call you. Other East Asian stops are covered in our country-by-country SIM guides.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹333 US$3.49 by card; from ≈ ₹95 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 13 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
A local SIM on arrival has two hurdles. Identity is checked before a local line is issued, and a physical Taiwan SIM card needs a free slot; on a single-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM, and the OTPs sent to that number stop reaching you. We quote no Taiwan SIM card price, because we have not verified current local rates.
Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule. The best eSIM for Taiwan is the row whose days and data both cover the trip, because a Taiwan plan cannot be relied on for a top-up later.
eSIM for Taiwan: most chosen plans
Charged US$3.49 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Taiwan vs this eSIM
Every pack in the table bundles minutes on your Indian number, which a data eSIM does not. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. On Vi prepaid, Taiwan sits outside the UL zone, so the ₹3,495 Ultra pack gives 2 GB here rather than FREE data.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Jio “East Asia, Europe and US” (100 countries) | ₹2,851 | 12 GB · 30 days | 150 min out + 150 in · 100 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days (non-UL zone) | ₹3,495 | 2 GB · 7 days | 200 min | about ₹1,748 |
| Vi prepaid Budget, Set 1 | ₹1,495 | 2 GB · 15 days | 200 min | about ₹748 |
Source: the operator document (Jio plan list · Airtel T&C PDF · Vi prepaid T&C PDF), checked on 13 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Prepaid and postpaid Vi users get different answers in Taiwan. The prepaid T&C put Taiwan in the non-UL zone; the postpaid table lists it in Set 1 (unlimited), and we could not confirm that this table is current. Check your own plan in the Vi app before you rely on either.
For a month-long stay with calls home, Jio’s ₹2,851 pack gives 12 GB, 150 minutes each way and 100 SMS over 30 days. For data only, 10 GB over 30 days on our Taiwan plan costs ≈ ₹1,627 (12 Oct rate), about ₹163 (US$1.70) per GB, charged US$16.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies.
Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.”
Airtel’s prepaid packs begin when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

A week in Taiwan: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 13 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 13 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
Unlimited or fixed data in Taiwan: size it at purchase
Our catalogue marks Taiwan’s unlimited rows as non-rechargeable, and we make no top-up promise for any Taiwan plan, so buy enough data at checkout. Unlimited here means full speed up to 3 GB a day, then 1 Mbps. Seven days of unlimited data cost ≈ ₹2,298 (12 Oct rate).
Work from daily use. At the data guide’s 0.3 GB a day, a week uses about 2.1 GB (our calculation), more than the 2 GB row holds, so the 3 GB row at ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate) is the floor. At 0.8 GB a day, 7 days use 5.6 GB, which overflows the 5 GB row: pick 10 GB or 7 days of unlimited data. Over 14 days the same use reaches 11.2 GB, and the 20 GB row at ≈ ₹1,915 (12 Oct rate) fits.
Taiwan plan or the Asia plan for Taipei plus Hong Kong or Japan
For Taiwan alone, the Taiwan plan does the job. For Taipei with Hong Kong or Japan on one ticket, the Asia plan lists 18 places, those three among them, on a single eSIM. It sells fixed-data rows only, so size it as above.
On 12 Oct 2026, 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate) on the Taiwan plan and ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate) on the Asia plan. Both set the access point name by hand on Android. Keep the Asia plan’s line switched off until you land abroad.
Vi’s allowance changes along this route. Hong Kong is in Vi’s UL zone, so Ultra prints FREE data there; Taiwan and Japan are non-UL, with 2 GB on the same ₹3,495 pack. The Asia SIM card guide and the Asia eSIM page cover the regional plan.
Setting up the Taiwan eSIM before you fly (manual APN on Android)
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. A QR code install on home Wi-Fi costs none of the plan’s days: data plan validity starts at the first connection to a Taiwanese network. On Android, one more step remains: type in the access point name shown on your order page.
iPhone sets the access point name itself. The APN guide shows where the field sits on Android, and the eSIM phone list confirms that your model takes an eSIM.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Taiwan
OTPs from Indian banks travel by SMS to your Indian number, and our Taiwan plans are data-only, so they cannot receive them. Keep the Indian SIM active as a second line with its mobile data switched off, and confirm with Jio,
Airtel or Vi that SMS reaches you in Taiwan on your plan.
No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. Dual-SIM settings are in the OTP guide; the US-dollar charge is explained in how card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Taiwan?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Taiwan as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Taiwan Mobile; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹333 (US$3.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹952 (US$9.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,286 (US$23.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in Taiwan?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.
How much data do I need for a week in Taiwan?
About 2.1 GB at light use of 0.3 GB a day, and 5.6 GB at 0.8 GB a day (our calculation). The second figure is more than a 5 GB row holds, so take 10 GB or a 7-day unlimited plan, which slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day.
When do the days on a Taiwan eSIM start?
On the first connection to a Taiwanese network; installing it in India on Wi-Fi uses no days. Jio’s packs begin at first usage, and Airtel’s prepaid packs when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Taiwan eSIM?
WhatsApp works over the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs are SMS to your Indian number, and our Taiwan plans are data-only, so keep the Indian SIM switched on as a second line. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.
Is one eSIM enough for Taiwan and Hong Kong?
Only the Asia plan covers both; the Taiwan plan works in Taiwan alone. The Asia plan lists 18 places, Taiwan and Hong Kong among them, and sells fixed-data rows only. On Vi, the ₹3,495 Ultra pack gives 2 GB in Taiwan and prints FREE data in Hong Kong.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check the exact model on our eSIM phone list before you buy. It has to run an eSIM and a physical SIM together, so your Indian SIM stays in for OTPs.
