Dubai & UAE SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Indian travellers have three ways to get data in Dubai: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack, a Dubai SIM card (the UAE tourist SIM from a local operator), or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our UAE eSIM is data-only and starts at ≈ ₹338 (9 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$3.49 by card.

Dubai eSIM or tourist SIM: what Indian travellers need

You need mobile data in Dubai, not a UAE phone number. Maps, ride apps and WhatsApp run on data, and a UAE eSIM supplies it from the moment you land. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone too: bank OTPs still arrive on that number.

The UAE is the top destination for Indian travellers abroad. The Ministry of Tourism counts 8,646,234 departures of Indian nationals to the UAE in 2025, up from 7,787,496 in 2024 (about 11% more, our calculation). That is about 26% of all 32,829,079 departures, our derivation. Transit passengers through Dubai may inflate the count; that is our hypothesis, not the ministry’s statement.

The UAE also hosts 4,326,248 non-resident Indians, the largest NRI population of any country (Ministry of External Affairs, January 2026). For other countries, browse all our country guides.

Our eSIM for UAE is data-only on the du network. It includes no calls and no SMS.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Dubai vs this eSIM

All three Indian operators sell roaming packs that cover the UAE. The five packs below cost ₹898 to ₹1,598 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB).

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Jio IR Gulf Pack₹8981 GB7about ₹898
Jio IR Gulf Pack₹1,5983 GB14about ₹533
Airtel prepaid IR₹9984 GB5about ₹250
Airtel prepaid IR₹1,2986 GB10about ₹216
Vi Haj pack (Saudi Arabia, UAE, Iraq)₹1,1992 GB20about ₹600

Source: operator documents (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026. The full comparison, with minutes and SMS per pack, is on UAE roaming vs eSIM.

For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our UAE eSIM costs ≈ ₹1,160 (9 Oct rate), about ₹232 (US$2.40) per GB, charged US$11.99; your bank may add its own forex markup on dollar payments. The pack wins when you need calls on your Indian number: Jio’s ₹898 pack includes 100 minutes outgoing and 100 incoming, Airtel’s ₹998 pack 150 minutes, while our plan includes none.

Read the Jio Gulf rows with care. Jio’s description of this pack says UAE only, while another note on the same page lists six Gulf countries — confirm in the MyJio app before you rely on it outside the UAE; for a Saudi leg, the Saudi Arabia guide compares the packs there. Airtel’s country list includes the UAE. Vi lists the UAE in the Haj pack, and its annual ₹2,997 and ₹4,997 packs give 25 minutes and no data in the UAE.

du and e& tourist SIMs vs an eSIM bought in India

du and e& (Etisalat) are UAE mobile operators, and both sell tourist SIM or eSIM offers on their own sites. This page quotes no UAE SIM card price in dirhams because we have not verified current ones.

An eSIM bought in India is installed before you land, so you skip the counter queue. A physical Dubai SIM needs a slot: on a phone with one SIM slot you would remove your Indian SIM and lose OTPs on that number. An eSIM leaves the slot untouched, which is why a Dubai SIM card is the second choice for most short trips.

A Dubai SIM makes sense if you need a UAE phone number, for example for deliveries during a long stay. We have not verified any free tourist SIM at Dubai airport. Check the terms with the operator at the counter before you count on one.

Before the Dubai flight: QR code at home, data on arrival

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in the UAE, on the du network. The days count from that first connection, not from the QR code scan at home, so an early install uses no days. On Android, enter the APN by hand; the setup answer on the UAE eSIM page gives it.

The best eSIM for UAE matches your days first and your data second: ≈ ₹338 (9 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, ≈ ₹676 (9 Oct rate) for 2 GB over 15 days, ≈ ₹1,160 (9 Oct rate) for 5 GB over 30 days. The 7-day unlimited plan costs ≈ ₹2,659 (9 Oct rate), at full speed for the first 3 GB each day and slower after that until the allowance resets 24 hours later. The ₹ figures are estimates at the day’s rate. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Not sure your phone can hold a UAE eSIM next to your Indian SIM? Our phone list answers that by model, and the iPhone and Android steps sit in the install guide.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Keeping your Indian number for OTPs during a UAE stay

Bank OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, and our UAE eSIM is data-only on the du network, so it cannot receive them. In Dubai, run two lines: the eSIM for maps and WhatsApp, your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM for texts, with its mobile data off. We cannot promise that every OTP will arrive while you roam.

Before the flight, ask your operator whether incoming SMS works in the UAE on your plan; on Jio, check the MyJio app. UPI is tied to the same Indian number, so confirm with your bank or UPI app before you count on it in Dubai. Our guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs shows the dual-SIM settings.

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in the United Arab Emirates?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats the United Arab Emirates as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add wbdata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Du; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹338 (US$3.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,160 (US$11.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,659 (US$27.49), with 3 GB/day at high speed.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Which SIM card is best for Dubai?

For data, a UAE eSIM installed in India: it works on landing and keeps your Indian SIM in the slot. A UAE SIM card from du or e& suits you only if you need a UAE number. Keep your Indian SIM for OTPs either way.

Will my Indian SIM work in the UAE?

A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Jio, Airtel and Vi sell packs that cover the UAE; the short-trip packs compared on this page cost ₹898 to ₹1,598 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Without a pack, Airtel prepaid data is barred and Vi keeps mobile data off.

Is there a free tourist SIM at Dubai airport?

We have not verified any free tourist SIM offer at Dubai airport. du and e& (Etisalat) sell tourist SIM or eSIM offers on their own sites; check terms and validity there before you rely on one.

Does the eSIM validity start when I install it in India?

No. The days count from the first connection to a UAE network, so you can install at home on Wi-Fi. Airtel’s prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on abroad, and Jio’s starts at first use.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a UAE eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.

How do I install the UAE eSIM before I fly?

At home on Wi-Fi, open your phone’s SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The plan connects when you land in the UAE.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your model on our eSIM phone list before you buy, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone’s SIM settings.
