Bahrain eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

A trip to Manama needs mobile data more than a Bahraini number. Our eSIM connects to Batelco or , both 5G, when you land; your Indian SIM stays in for bank OTPs. A Bahrain SIM card matters only when you need a local number. Other Gulf states have their own country SIM guides.

The Ministry of Tourism counted 383,184 departures of Indian nationals to Bahrain in 2025, about 1% more than the 379,204 of 2024 (our calculation). Leisure and business trips made up 38.6% of them.

The Bahrain plan has 10 options, and unlimited data comes only for 3, 5, 7 and 10 days; each slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. The 10-day plan costs ≈ ₹4,596 (12 Oct rate). Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Bahrain vs this eSIM

The five prepaid packs below all list Bahrain and cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Each adds minutes on your Indian number; our data-only eSIM has none. Vi appears twice because Bahrain is non-UL for its Ultra pack but sits in Budget Set 1.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Source: the operator document (Jio IR plan list · Airtel IR terms · Vi IR terms), checked on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.

On Vi, the cheaper pack is the better fit here: Budget ₹1,495 gives the same 2 GB and 200 minutes as Ultra ₹3,495, over 15 days instead of 7. In Kuwait, which Vi lists in its UL zone, the Ultra pack prints its data as FREE instead.

Jio’s description of its Gulf Pack says UAE only, while another note on the same page lists six Gulf countries — confirm in the MyJio app before you rely on it outside the UAE.

On our eSIM, 5 GB for 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,388 (12 Oct rate), about ₹278 (US$2.90) per GB, charged US$14.49, plus any markup your card issuer applies. A pack wins when you must call home on your Indian number.

Bahrain plan or the Middle East plan for a Bahrain and Saudi Arabia trip

A Bahrain-only trip fits the Bahrain plan. When the route crosses into Saudi Arabia, the Middle East plan covers both, among 13 countries, on one eSIM. It sells unlimited data only, and it is also the way to get two weeks of unlimited data in Bahrain, because the Bahrain plan stops at 10 days. Egypt is on the same 13-country list.

The Middle East plan’s 15-day unlimited option costs ≈ ₹7,566 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. For two weeks on the Bahrain plan, 2 GB over 15 days costs ≈ ₹813 (12 Oct rate). See the Middle East eSIM page and the Saudi Arabia guide.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM set up in India

A Bahrain tourist SIM is a physical card from a Bahraini operator such as Batelco or , the two networks our plan uses. We quote no Bahrain SIM card price in dinars because we have not verified current rates. An eSIM for Bahrain from India is set up at home before you fly.

A local SIM on arrival needs a free slot; on a single-slot phone the Indian SIM comes out. Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land. Data plan validity starts at the first connection to a Bahraini network, not at the QR code install. On Android, type the access point name from your order page. Check the eSIM phone list.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Bahrain

Your bank’s OTPs travel by SMS to your Indian number, and the Bahrain plan cannot receive SMS. Keep the Indian SIM on as a second line with data off, and ask Jio, or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Bahrain.

No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; see the OTP guide and the Vi roaming page.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Bahrain?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Bahrain as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find STC and Batelco; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹334 (US$3.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,388 (US$14.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,639 (US$37.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Bahrain?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off.

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Bahrain?

Not for data. The eSIM installed in India connects to Batelco or when you land. A Bahraini card is worth buying only for a local number.

When do the days on a Bahrain eSIM start?

At the first connection to a Bahraini network, so a QR code install at home uses no days. An Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Bahrain eSIM?

WhatsApp messages use the eSIM’s data. OTPs are SMS to your Indian number, which the Bahrain plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Is there an unlimited Bahrain plan for two weeks?

Not on the Bahrain plan, whose unlimited options stop at 10 days. The Middle East plan, which covers Bahrain, has a 15-day unlimited option that slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list. On Android, type the access point name from the order page.
