Oman SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Your Indian SIM can roam in Oman on a Jio,
Airtel or Vi pack; the other two routes are an Oman SIM card bought after landing and a travel eSIM installed in India. Our Oman eSIM runs on
Omantel and starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.

Oman eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
A visitor to Oman needs mobile data for maps, ride apps and WhatsApp messages far more than an Omani number. An Oman eSIM bought in India is ready when you land in Muscat, and your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. A local number matters only when someone in Oman must call you. For other stops in the region, our guides to Gulf and other destinations compare the same three routes.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹286 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹153 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
Indian nationals made 951,626 departures to Oman in 2025, about 10% more than the 864,251 of 2024 (our calculation). Only 37.42% were leisure or business trips. The MEA counts 676,781 non-resident Indians in Oman (January 2026); residents usually hold an Omani SIM already, so this guide is written for visitors.
Our Oman plan uses
Omantel’s 5G network only. Size it by days: 2 GB over 15 days costs ≈ ₹717 (12 Oct rate). Unlimited data runs from 3 to 30 days; the 7-day plan costs ≈ ₹3,160 (12 Oct rate) and slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.
eSIM for Oman: most chosen plans
Charged US$2.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.
What it costs per day
Price ÷ days, at the market rate of 12 Oct. A longer plan usually costs less per day: pick by your trip length, not by the lowest daily price.
Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Oman vs this eSIM
Jio,
Airtel and Vi all list Oman, and the five prepaid packs below cost ₹599 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Four include minutes on your Indian number; Jio’s ₹599 data pack has none, like our eSIM. Vi is the weak spot here, because Oman sits outside its prepaid UL zone. Qatar, Bahrain and Saudi Arabia sit outside that zone too; among the Gulf countries, only Kuwait and the UAE are inside.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Jio IR data pack | ₹599 | 1 GB · 7 days | no calls | about ₹599 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days (non-UL zone) | ₹3,495 | 2 GB · 7 days | 200 min | about ₹1,748 |
Source: the operator document (Jio IR packs · Airtel prepaid T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices (₹898 and ₹1,198); the T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Vi treats Oman differently by plan type. On prepaid, Oman is non-UL, and the ₹1,495 Budget pack falls in Set 2: 750 MB and 100 minutes over 15 days. Vi’s postpaid terms put Oman in Set 1, the unlimited set, but we cannot confirm that table is current: the PDF says requests for old packs raised as of 15 May 2026 keep their old benefits. See the Vi roaming page.
Our 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,101 (12 Oct rate), about ₹220 (US$2.30) per GB, charged US$11.49, plus any markup your card issuer applies. Calls are where a pack wins: Airtel’s ₹998 pack carries 150 minutes, our plan none.
A 7-day visit outlasts Airtel’s 5-day ₹998 pack by two days; the 10-day ₹1,298 pack covers it. Airtel counts prepaid validity in IST from the moment your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

A week in Oman: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
Jio’s Gulf Pack in Oman: what the two notes on Jio’s page say
Jio’s own page disagrees about where its Gulf Pack works. Jio’s description of this pack says UAE only, while another note on the same page lists six Gulf countries — confirm in the MyJio app before you rely on it outside the UAE. Our table leaves it out for Oman.
The ₹951 pack (100-country list) and the ₹599 data pack list Oman without that conflict; see our Jio roaming page.
Driving on to Dubai? Our Middle East plan covers 13 countries, including Oman, the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia, but sells only unlimited plans. Seven days cost ≈ ₹3,926 (12 Oct rate) on it, against ≈ ₹3,160 (12 Oct rate) on the Oman plan alone. Compare them on the Middle East eSIM page; the UAE guide and UAE roaming page cover that leg.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India
Omantel, the network our plan uses, is one of Oman’s mobile operators, and an Oman tourist SIM is a physical card you buy after landing. We quote no Oman SIM card price in rials because we have not verified current rates. An eSIM for Oman from India is installed before you fly.
A physical Omani SIM needs a free slot. If your phone has one slot, the Indian SIM comes out and OTPs to that number stop.
Setting up the Oman eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Oman. Do the QR code install on home Wi-Fi: data plan validity starts at the first connection to an Omani network, so installing early costs none of the plan’s days. After landing, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.
iPhone picks the access point name automatically; on Android you type it by hand, using the APN shown on your order page. See the Android install guide and the eSIM phone list.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Oman
OTPs from your Indian bank go by SMS to your Indian number, and our Oman plan has no SMS, so it cannot receive them. Leave the Indian SIM in as a second line with its mobile data off, and check with Jio,
Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Oman.
No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers the dual-SIM settings.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Oman?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Oman as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. The plan does not set it by itself here: add globaldata on Android under the eSIM line’s mobile network settings.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Omantel; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,101 (US$11.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,160 (US$32.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in Oman?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. In Oman, Vi’s Ultra pack carries 2 GB, not FREE data.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in Oman?
Not for data. The eSIM connects to
Omantel when you land, and messaging apps run on its data. An Omani SIM card is worth buying only if someone in Oman needs a local number to reach you.
When do the days on an Oman eSIM start?
At the first connection to an Omani network, so a QR code install at home uses no days. Airtel prepaid packs count in IST from the moment your phone latches on to a covered foreign network; Jio’s start at first usage.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with an Oman eSIM?
WhatsApp messages travel over the eSIM’s data. OTPs are SMS to your Indian number, which a data-only Oman plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active as a second line. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.
Does the Jio Gulf pack work in Oman?
Not confirmed. Jio’s description of this pack says UAE only, while another note on the same page lists six Gulf countries — confirm in the MyJio app before you rely on it outside the UAE. Jio’s ₹951 pack and ₹599 data pack both list Oman.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list before you pay. On Android, the Oman plan also needs the access point name typed by hand from your order page.
