Philippines SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM
Indian travellers have three ways to get data in the Philippines: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack; a Philippines tourist SIM bought after landing; or a travel eSIM for Philippines trips installed before the flight. Our Philippines eSIM is data-only and starts at ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.
Philippines SIM card or eSIM: what Indian travellers need
You need mobile data in the Philippines, not a Philippine phone number. An eSIM supplies maps and messaging data from the moment you land. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone too, because bank OTPs still arrive on that number.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | Depends on the operator’s pack | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Data is fixed per pack; check that the pack covers the Philippines |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹289 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹116 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
The Ministry of Tourism recorded 82,172 departures of Indian nationals to the Philippines in 2025. That is about 0.25% of 32,829,079 departures overall (our derivation).
Can a foreigner buy a SIM card in the Philippines? This page does not quote local SIM rules, prices, or a ranking of Globe, Smart or DITO. An eSIM bought in India is installed online, so there is no shop visit. Our plan runs on Smart; it includes no calls and no SMS.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in the Philippines vs this eSIM
All three Indian operators sell roaming packs that cover the Philippines. The four packs below cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB).
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data | Days | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB | 10 | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹998 | 4 GB | 5 | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR | ₹1,298 | 6 GB | 10 | about ₹216 |
| Vi Ultra (non-UL zone) | ₹3,495 | 2 GB | 7 | about ₹1,748 |
Source: the documents (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices (₹898 and ₹1,198); its T&C, dated 24 Sep 2026, list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Vi prints “FREE” data on its Ultra packs only in its 40-country “UL” zone. The Philippines sits in the prepaid non-UL zone, where the ₹3,495 Ultra pack gives 2 GB and 200 minutes. Check the zone before you recharge; Vi’s roaming packs are compared on their own page.
For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our eSIM costs ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate), about ₹192 (US$2.00) per GB, charged US$9.99, and your bank may add its own forex markup. Our unlimited data plans for the Philippines slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day, in our catalogue on 12 Oct 2026. The pack wins when you need calls on your Indian number: Airtel’s ₹998 prepaid pack includes 150 minutes, while our plan includes none.
Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. Our eSIM counts its days from the first connection to a Philippine network, so installing it at home uses no days.
Island hopping: Cebu, Bohol, Palawan and Boracay
Our catalogue on 12 Oct 2026 lists service on the country’s principal islands and names four of them: Cebu, Bohol, Palawan and Boracay. A Cebu to Palawan route therefore needs no second profile. We make no promise about signal on remote islets or on ferries between islands. Indonesia works the same way: one plan covers Bali, Java and Lombok, as the Bali guide explains.
Install before you fly, connect on landing
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi: data plan validity starts only at the first connection to a network in the Philippines. When you land, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line.
A Manila airport SIM is a physical Philippines SIM card, and it needs a free slot in your phone. We have not verified what is sold there, so we name no brand. For other stops in Asia, see our SIM guides for other countries.
Check your model on the eSIM phone list first. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs while data runs on the eSIM
Bank OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM cannot receive. Keep your Indian SIM active as a second line with its mobile data off; the eSIM carries maps and WhatsApp. Your phone has to run the eSIM and the physical Indian SIM at the same time.
Check incoming SMS in the MyJio or Vi app. Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation allows unlimited incoming SMS for 28 days, on top of an active base pack (Airtel T&C, as listed on 12 Oct 2026). No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs shows the dual-SIM settings.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work. For more Asian countries, see the Asia eSIM guide.
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in the Philippines?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats the Philippines as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Smart; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹289 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹966 (US$9.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,224 (US$22.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Can a foreigner buy a SIM card in the Philippines?
This page does not quote local SIM rules. A data-only eSIM bought in India is installed online before you fly, so there is no shop visit on arrival.
Will my Indian SIM work in the Philippines?
A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. The four packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026.
Does the eSIM validity start when I install it in India?
No. The days count from the first connection to a network in the Philippines, so you can install at home on Wi-Fi.
Can I use WhatsApp and get OTPs with a Philippines eSIM?
WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.
