Thailand SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Indian travellers have three ways to get data in Thailand: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack, a Thailand SIM card (the Thai tourist SIM), or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our Thailand eSIM is data-only and starts at ≈ ₹289 (9 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card.

Thailand eSIM or SIM card: what Indian travellers actually need

You need mobile data in Thailand, not a Thai phone number. Maps, messaging and hotel bookings run on data, which an eSIM supplies from the moment you land. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone too: bank OTPs still arrive on that number.

India’s Ministry of Tourism data gives about 2.2 million Indian departures to Thailand in 2025 (our derivation: Thailand’s 6.8% share in its Annual Tourism Snapshot 2025 × 32,829,079 total departures). Our plan runs on the AIS and True networks, on the islands as well as the mainland (Phuket and Koh Samui included). It includes no calls and no SMS.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Thailand vs this eSIM

All three Indian operators sell roaming packs that cover Thailand. The five short-trip packs below cost ₹951 to ₹2,499 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM does not. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB).

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries)₹9514 GB10about ₹238

Airtel prepaid IR₹1,2986 GB10about ₹216
Vi South Asia₹1,8991 GB/day (5 GB)5about ₹380

Source: operator documents (Jio IR plans · Airtel T&C · Vi prepaid T&C), checked on 12 Oct 2026. Airtel’s T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026. Airtel’s own FAQ page still shows older prices (₹898 and ₹1,198); the current T&C list ₹998 and ₹1,298. The full comparison, with minutes and SMS per pack, is on Thailand roaming vs eSIM.

For comparison, 5 GB for 30 days on our Thailand eSIM costs ≈ ₹628 (9 Oct rate), about ₹126 (US$1.30) per GB, charged US$6.49, and your bank may add its own forex markup. The pack wins when you need calls on your Indian number: Airtel’s ₹998 pack includes 150 minutes, while our plan includes none.

Validity starts at different moments. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Airtel prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage, and a pack expires unreimbursed if you do not travel within 30 days of booking. Our eSIM counts its days from the first connection to a Thai network, so installing it at home does not use up any days.

Without a pack, Airtel bars data on prepaid lines “to avoid any accidental usage”, and Vi’s RoamSafe keeps mobile data off. One r/Airtel user on Reddit (26 Feb 2026) asked: “heading to Thailand soon for a 5-day trip and trying to figure out the most cost-effective Airtel international roaming pack”. That is one traveller’s question, not a price reference.

Suvarnabhumi airport SIM vs an eSIM bought in India

A Thailand SIM card for tourists is a physical card you buy after you land. We have not verified which offers are sold at Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang, so this page names no Thai SIM brand and quotes no baht prices. An eSIM bought in India is installed before you land, so there is nothing to buy on arrival.

A physical Thai SIM needs a slot. On a phone with one physical SIM slot, you would remove your Indian SIM and lose OTPs on that number. An eSIM leaves the slot untouched.

A Thailand SIM card makes sense if you need a Thai number, for example to receive local calls. Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports counted 2,487,319 arrivals from India in 2025 (preliminary). On a short holiday, data matters more than a Thai number. Heading on from Thailand? Our other country guides cover the next stop.

Install at home, online when you land in Bangkok or Phuket

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi: the plan’s days start only at the first connection to AIS or True in Thailand. At Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang or Phuket, the only step left is switching on data roaming for the eSIM line.

The same eSIM works in Phuket and Koh Samui as well as Bangkok, so an island leg needs no second SIM. Check your model on the eSIM phone list before you pay; the install guide has the iPhone and Android screens.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and UPI on a Thailand trip: keep your Indian SIM on

Bank OTPs come by SMS to your Indian number, and our Thailand eSIM is data-only, so it cannot receive them. Keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. It waits for OTPs while the eSIM carries maps and WhatsApp.

Without a roaming pack, Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation allows unlimited incoming SMS for 28 days, on top of an active base pack (Airtel T&C, as listed on 12 Oct 2026). On Jio or Vi, check incoming SMS in the MyJio or Vi app, and ask your bank before you count on UPI in Thailand. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs shows the dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Best eSIM for Thailand: how to choose by trip length

Choose a Thailand SIM card or eSIM by days first, then by GB. For a week, 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹289 (9 Oct rate); for two weeks, 2 GB over 15 days costs ≈ ₹531 (9 Oct rate); for a month, 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹628 (9 Oct rate). The ₹ figures are estimates at the day’s rate.

Four checks decide the rest. Does your phone support eSIM? Do you need Indian-number calls, which points to an operator pack? Will you run maps, video calls or a hotspot all day, which points to a larger plan or an unlimited one (speed drops to 1 Mbps after 5 GB a day)? Do you need the Indian SIM for OTPs? The data advisor on the Thailand eSIM page turns trip length into a GB figure.

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Thailand?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Thailand as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find True and AIS; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹289 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹628 (US$6.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹2,030 (US$20.99), with 5 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Do I need to buy a SIM card in Thailand?

No. A data-only eSIM installed in India gives you data on landing, so a Thailand SIM card is optional. Buy one only if you need a Thai phone number, and keep your Indian SIM for OTPs.

Will my Indian SIM work in Thailand?

A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Jio, Airtel and Vi sell packs that cover Thailand; the five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹2,499 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. Without a pack, Airtel prepaid data is barred and Vi keeps data off.

Does the eSIM validity start when I install it in India?

No. The days count from the first connection to a Thai network, so you can install at home on Wi-Fi. A Jio pack starts at first use, and an Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on abroad.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Thailand eSIM?

WhatsApp runs on the eSIM’s data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which a data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.

How do I install the Thailand eSIM before I fly?

At home on Wi-Fi, open your phone’s SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The plan connects when you land in Thailand.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your model on our eSIM phone list before you buy, or look for an “Add eSIM” option in your phone’s SIM settings.
