Tanzania SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

The Serengeti at dawn: what a Tanzania SIM card or eSIM covers on safari.

Jio, and Vi each sell roaming packs that list Tanzania (as listed on 13 Oct 2026). A data-only eSIM for Tanzania installed in India starts at ≈ ₹428 (13 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$4.49 by card. It covers the mainland and Zanzibar, and a separate East Africa plan adds Kenya and Uganda.

Tanzania eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

A safari circuit plus Stone Town and the Zanzibar beaches needs mobile data for maps, ferry and transfer confirmations and WhatsApp with your guide. A data eSIM covers that from landing and keeps your Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs. A Tanzania tourist SIM bought as a local SIM on arrival only earns its place if you want a Tanzanian number. No plan is the best eSIM for Tanzania on every trip. Other countries on a longer Africa trip have their own SIM guides.

A physical Tanzania SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot; on a single-slot phone it replaces the Indian SIM. We quote no Tanzania SIM card price in shillings because we have not verified current rates. India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 44,042 departures of Indian nationals to Tanzania in 2025.

Our Tanzania plans run on two local networks, Halotel and (the Tanzanian network), both on 4G, with data only and no calls or SMS. Airtel here is the local network’s name. The Indian Airtel pack is a separate product sold by Airtel India: it works on your Indian SIM, and our eSIM does not use it. The catalogue has six fixed-data plans (1 to 20 GB) and six unlimited data plans of 3 to 30 days; unlimited speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Tanzania vs this eSIM

Six rows below list Tanzania and cost ₹599 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Jio lists it in the World Pack and data packs, not the 100-country or 75-country packs. covers it on its single pack set. Vi prepaid covers it with limits.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Every row links to the operator’s document as read on 13 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our own division of price by data. Jio’s data packs come in other sizes, and we quote no country count for them. Airtel’s T&C carry the date 24 Sep 2026, and its FAQ page still shows older prices.

Vi gives Tanzania limited data twice over, for separate reasons. Tanzania is in the non-UL prepaid zone, so Ultra carries 2 GB and 200 minutes instead of data printed as FREE. It is also in Budget Set 1, where ₹1,495 carries 2 GB over 15 days. Vi’s postpaid terms list Tanzania in Set 2, and we could not confirm that this table is current.

How the packs compared with our plans on 13 Oct 2026. Our 2 GB plan for 15 days at ≈ ₹761 (13 Oct rate), charged US$7.99 by card, cost less than Jio’s ₹1,499 for 2 GB over 14 days, though Jio adds minutes. Airtel’s ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days cost about the same as our 3 GB plan at ≈ ₹1,047 (13 Oct rate), with more data. Airtel’s ₹1,298 for 6 GB over 10 days cost less than our 5 GB plan at ≈ ₹1,476 (13 Oct rate). Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. The ≈ ₹ price (charged in USD) is an estimate at the day’s rate.

Airtel prepaid packs book up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Data plan validity differs by operator. Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” Our plan counts its days from the first connection to a Tanzanian network.

Safari plus Zanzibar: what the Tanzania plan covers

Our catalogue says the Tanzania plan covers the mainland and Zanzibar, so one install serves a safari circuit and the island. We hold no coverage data for the national parks, so ask us before you rely on mobile data inside a park or on a game drive. Download offline maps and your booking documents before you leave a town.

Size by days on the road. At 0.3 GB a day, seven days use about 2.1 GB, just over the 2 GB row, so the 3 GB plan at ≈ ₹1,047 (13 Oct rate) fits. At 0.8 GB a day, seven days come to about 5.6 GB, which needs the 10 GB plan at ≈ ₹2,381 (13 Oct rate) (our calculation, profiles from the data guide).

The unlimited rows have an oddity. The 10-day row costs ≈ ₹3,620 (13 Oct rate), charged US$37.99, against ≈ ₹3,429 (13 Oct rate) for 7 days, so the three extra days add little to the price. All unlimited rows slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day.

Tanzania with Kenya or Uganda: the East Africa plan or two country plans

Our East Africa plan lists Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda, and sells fixed and unlimited rows, unlike the Africa plan, which lists all three among many more countries and has no unlimited rows. On the East Africa plan, 10 GB for 30 days costs ≈ ₹3,381 (13 Oct rate).

On 13 Oct 2026, the Tanzania plan cost less than the East Africa plan on all six fixed rows and all five unlimited rows the two share; for 5 GB the figures are ≈ ₹1,476 (13 Oct rate) against ≈ ₹1,952 (13 Oct rate). East Africa pays off when a route crosses a border. Kenya 5 GB at ≈ ₹2,667 (13 Oct rate) plus Tanzania 5 GB cost about 23% more than the East Africa 10 GB row, for the same 10 GB in total. The East Africa pool is shared and also covers Uganda; two plans give two separate 5 GB pools.

The Africa plan’s 5 GB row costs ≈ ₹3,906 (13 Oct rate), against ≈ ₹1,952 (13 Oct rate) on East Africa. See the Kenya guide for the other half of a safari route.

Setting up the Tanzania eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Tanzania. Look your phone up on the eSIM phone list, order on the Tanzania eSIM page, and do the QR code install on home Wi-Fi. After touchdown, turn on data roaming for the eSIM line.

The Tanzania plans set their access point name automatically on iPhone and Android. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Tanzania

Bank OTPs are texts to your Indian number, and the Tanzania eSIM cannot take texts. Keep the Indian SIM active as a second line with its mobile data off, and ask your operator whether SMS reaches you in Tanzania on your plan. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation, valid 28 days at standard rates, “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack. Vi’s ₹118 standard-rates pack makes incoming SMS free for 28 days. Jio users should check the MyJio app. The OTP guide covers the dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Tanzania?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Tanzania as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Halotel and Airtel; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹428 (US$4.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,476 (US$15.49). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,429 (US$35.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Tanzania?

A Jio, or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Jio, Airtel and Vi each sell packs that list Tanzania.

Does the Tanzania eSIM work in Zanzibar?

Our catalogue says the Tanzania plan covers the mainland and Zanzibar. We hold no coverage data for individual beaches, villages or national parks, so ask us before you rely on a specific spot.

When do the days on a Tanzania eSIM start?

They start with the first connection to a network in Tanzania. Installing the eSIM at home leaves the days untouched.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Tanzania eSIM?

WhatsApp messages go over the eSIM’s data. OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, which this data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active in the phone.

Is one eSIM enough for Kenya and Tanzania?

Yes with our East Africa plan, which lists Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda and has unlimited rows. The Africa plan and the Global plan list them too. The Tanzania plan covers Tanzania only.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Our eSIM phone list shows whether your exact model takes an eSIM; a model not listed should be treated as no.
