Austria SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Hallstatt in morning mist: what an Austria SIM card or eSIM covers in the Alps.

Austria gives you three ways to get data: a roaming pack from Jio, or Vi on your Indian SIM, an Austria SIM card from a local operator after landing, or a data eSIM installed in India. Our Austria eSIM starts at ≈ ₹285 (13 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$2.99 by card, and has no calls or SMS.

Austria eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

Rail tickets, offline maps and messages are the data jobs on an Austria trip, and an eSIM for Austria installed in India does them from the moment you land. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs. An Austria tourist SIM is worth it only when someone must reach you on an Austrian number, and an Austria SIM card takes a free slot. We quote no Austria SIM card price because we have not verified current local rates, and no plan is the best eSIM for Austria on every route. For other Alpine stops, see our international SIM guides by country.

India’s Ministry of Tourism recorded 57,945 departures of Indian nationals to Austria in 2025. We have no leisure share and no 2024 count for Austria, so we state no growth.

Our plan connects to Drei, which our Austria page shows as 5G. It is a country plan, and we promise no signal in any given spot; that includes high mountain passes and remote valleys, so download offline maps before an Alpine drive. Looking for one SIM for all of Austria? This is the closest we sell, with that limit. At 0.8 GB a day, ten days use 8 GB (our calculation), inside the 10 GB row at ≈ ₹952 (13 Oct rate), about ₹95 (US$1.00) per GB. Unlimited data plans slow to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in Austria vs this eSIM

Austria is on all three operators’ lists, and the five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Each adds minutes on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM lacks. Because Austria is in Vi’s unlimited zone, the ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints its data here as FREE.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

The ≈ ₹ per GB column divides price by data; that division is ours. Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.

Austria appears in two Vi lists, and each carries its own pack: Ultra data is FREE because of the unlimited zone, while the ₹1,495 Budget pack gives 2 GB and 200 minutes over 15 days because of Budget Set 1. Keep the two apart. Vi’s postpaid table also lists Austria in its unlimited Set 1, though we could not confirm that this country table is current.

Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” An prepaid pack begins when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. You can book it up to 30 days before travel, and if you do not travel within 30 days the pack expires with no reimbursement.

Austria with Switzerland or Germany: where Vi’s unlimited stops

Vi’s unlimited stops at the Swiss border, not the German one. Austria and Germany are both in Vi’s unlimited zone, where the ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints data as FREE. Switzerland is in the non-unlimited zone, where the same pack gives 2 GB and 200 minutes, about ₹1,748 per GB (our division).

That is the Vienna to Zurich flip: the ₹3,495 pack that prints FREE data in Vienna gives only 2 GB in Zurich, under Vi’s two zones. Vi’s Budget Set 1 lists Switzerland as well. Our Switzerland roaming comparison sets the Swiss packs out in full, and Vi’s own rules sit on the Vi roaming page.

Austria plan or the Europe plan for an Alpine route

A route of Vienna, Salzburg, Innsbruck and Zurich or Munich crosses three countries, and the Europe plan lists Austria, Switzerland, Germany and Italy among its 41 countries. The Austria plan covers Austria alone.

At prices on 13 Oct 2026, a 10 GB row over 30 days costs ≈ ₹952 (13 Oct rate) on the Austria plan, ≈ ₹1,762 (13 Oct rate) on the Switzerland plan and ≈ ₹1,809 (13 Oct rate) on the Europe plan. The Austria and Switzerland plans together cost about 50% more than the Europe plan (our calculation), and the Europe plan gives one pool and one install in place of two. For Austria alone, the 10 GB Austria row costs about half the Europe plan’s 10 GB row (our calculation), so the Europe plan pays off only when you cross a border. Its access point name comes from your order e-mail, and Android asks you to type it in.

The Europe SIM card guide, the Europe eSIM page and the Europe roaming comparison cover the wider options.

Setting up the Austria eSIM before you fly

Install first, travel second. Scan the QR code from your order e-mail on home Wi-Fi and switch the line off until the flight. Data plan validity starts at the first connection to an Austrian network, so a QR code install at home uses no days. iPhone and Android fill in the access point name themselves, while the Europe plan asks Android users to type it in.

On landing, turn data roaming on for the eSIM line; the data roaming guide has the steps. Check your phone on the eSIM phone list, read the install guide for each screen, and find the plans on the Austria eSIM page.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Austria

Indian banks send OTPs as SMS to your Indian number, and the Austria plan has none to receive them. Keep your Indian SIM in as a second line with its mobile data off. Ask Jio, or Vi whether SMS reaches you in Austria on your plan; Vi’s ₹118 prepaid pack makes incoming SMS free for 28 days, other use at standard rates (13 Oct 2026), and Jio customers check the MyJio app.

No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. The OTP guide has the dual-SIM settings, and how card payments work explains the dollar charge.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Austria?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Austria as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Drei; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹285 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹666 (US$6.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,381 (US$14.49), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Indian SIM work in Austria?

Yes, once international roaming is on; for mobile data, buy a roaming pack, because without one bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. All three list Austria, and the five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.

Is Vi unlimited roaming unlimited in Austria and Switzerland?

In Austria, Vi prints the ₹3,495 Ultra pack’s data as FREE. In Switzerland the same pack gives 2 GB and 200 minutes, because Vi puts Switzerland outside its unlimited zone. Germany stays inside it, so the drop comes at the Swiss border.

When do the days on an Austria eSIM start?

At the first connection to an Austrian network. Installing at home on Wi-Fi uses no days. A Jio pack starts at first usage, and an Airtel prepaid pack when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with an Austria eSIM?

WhatsApp works on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs arrive as SMS on your Indian number, and the data-only Austria plan cannot receive them, so keep that SIM on as a second line with data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Is one eSIM enough for Austria and Switzerland?

Not on the Austria plan, which covers Austria alone. The Europe plan lists both countries, along with Germany and Italy. Compare its price with two country plans first, because on 13 Oct 2026 the Swiss 10 GB row cost almost twice as much as the Austrian one.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Look up your exact model on our eSIM phone list before paying. The phone must run an eSIM and a physical SIM together, so the Indian SIM can stay in for OTPs while the eSIM carries data.
