France eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need
Most France trips need data for maps, train tickets and messages, not a French number. A data eSIM installed in India covers that from landing, while your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. A France SIM card earns its place only when someone in France must call you on a local number. Our guides to other countries make the same comparison elsewhere.
| Option | Price | What you need | Weak point |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack | ₹589 to ₹6,995 a pack from about ₹194 per GB | Roaming switched on and a pack bought before you fly | Costs more per GB than the eSIM |
| Pocket Wi-Fi router | Not verified | Collect it, keep it charged and return it | One connection for the group, only while you stay together |
| Local SIM bought on arrival | Not verified | A free SIM slot and a shop after landing | On a one-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM and its OTPs |
| Travel eSIM from this site | from ≈ ₹286 US$2.99 by card; from ≈ ₹86 per GB | An eSIM phone that is not locked to one operator | Data only: no calls or SMS on your Indian number |
Pack prices as listed by Jio, Airtel and Vi on 12 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). eSIM prices are an estimate at the day’s rate; your card is charged in US$.
The Ministry of Tourism counted 224,161 departures of Indian nationals to France in 2025, about 1% fewer than the 226,521 of 2024 (our calculation). Leisure and business trips made up 79.41% of them.
Our plan covers mainland France and Corsica on the Orange and Bouygues Telecom networks, both 5G. Monaco and the overseas territories, such as Guadeloupe and Réunion, are outside it.
The best eSIM for France is the smallest plan that covers your days. Two weeks with 2 GB cost ≈ ₹574 (12 Oct rate). The 7-day unlimited data plan costs ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate), and its speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule.

Charged US$2.99 by card. Your bank converts the US$ charge at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction fee — how card payment works.

Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in France vs this eSIM
All three Indian operators cover France, and every pack in the table adds minutes on your Indian number, which our data-only eSIM lacks. The five packs below cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. France sits in Vi’s UL zone, so Vi’s ₹3,495 Ultra pack prints its data as FREE. Germany sits in the same zone.
We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.
| Pack | Price | Data · days | Calls · SMS | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio IR Voice & Data (100 countries) | ₹951 | 4 GB · 10 days | 100 min out + 100 in · 25 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Jio “East Asia, Europe and US” (100 countries) | ₹2,851 | 12 GB · 30 days | 150 min out + 150 in · 100 SMS | about ₹238 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 5 days | ₹998 | 4 GB · 5 days | 150 min · 20 SMS | about ₹250 |
| Airtel prepaid IR, 10 days | ₹1,298 | 6 GB · 10 days | 200 min · 20 SMS | about ₹216 |
| Vi prepaid Ultra, 7 days (UL zone) | ₹3,495 | data printed as FREE · 7 days | unlimited calls | not applicable |
Source: the operator document (Jio plan list · Airtel T&C PDF · Vi prepaid T&C PDF), checked on 12 Oct 2026. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel’s FAQ page still shows older prices; its T&C dated 24 Sep 2026 list ₹998 and ₹1,298.
Vi’s FREE label and our unlimited plan are different promises. Vi’s 7-day Ultra pack adds unlimited calls; our 7-day unlimited data plan slows to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day and carries no calls. In Switzerland, Vi’s non-UL zone applies, and the same ₹3,495 pack carries 2 GB.
For a stay longer than 10 days, Jio’s ₹2,851 pack gives 12 GB over 30 days. Our 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,244 (12 Oct rate), about ₹125 (US$1.30) per GB, charged US$12.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies. Need minutes on your Indian number?
Airtel’s ₹1,298 pack carries 200, our plan none.
Jio states: “Your plan validity begins only with your first usage—call, text, or data.” An Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. The Europe roaming comparison sets these packs against our Europe plan.

A week in France: roaming pack vs eSIM
5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.
Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 12 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.
France plan or the Europe plan for a multi-country trip
Buy the France plan for a France-only trip and the Europe plan when the route crosses a border. The Europe plan lists 41 countries, including Switzerland, the UK and Türkiye, so Paris with a Zurich or London leg needs one eSIM, not two. For France alone it costs more, as the 10 GB rows show.
For 10 GB over 30 days, the France plan costs ≈ ₹1,244 (12 Oct rate) and the Europe plan ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate). Neither lists Monaco. See the Europe SIM card guide, the Europe eSIM page and the Switzerland guide.
Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India
A France tourist SIM is a physical card from a local operator such as Orange or Bouygues Telecom. Identity is checked before a local line is issued. We quote no France SIM card price in euros because we have not verified current rates. An eSIM for France from India is installed before you fly.
A physical France SIM card needs a free slot. On a phone with one slot it replaces your Indian SIM, and OTPs to that number stop until you swap back.
Setting up the France eSIM before you fly
Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in France. Scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi. Data plan validity starts at the first connection to a French network, so a QR code install at home costs none of the plan’s days. After landing, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line.
The France plan sets its access point name automatically on iPhone and Android. Check the eSIM phone list; the install guide shows the screens.
Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
Bank OTPs and your Indian number in France
Your bank sends OTPs by SMS to your Indian number, and the France plan has no SMS, so it cannot receive them. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. Before you fly, ask Jio,
Airtel or Vi whether SMS reaches you in France on your plan.
No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers the dual-SIM settings.
Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.
Check before you fly
What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in France?
Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.
The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.
The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats France as roaming for it.
The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.
The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find Bouygues and Orange; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.
Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.
What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)
For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹286 (US$2.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹861 (US$8.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹1,819 (US$18.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.
I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.
FAQ
Will my Indian SIM work in France?
A Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack: without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. The five packs in our table cost ₹951 to ₹3,495 as listed on 12 Oct 2026.
Do I need to buy a SIM card in France?
Only if you need a French number. An eSIM installed in India connects when you land, on the Orange or Bouygues Telecom network. A France SIM card needs a free slot and an identity check, and on a single-slot phone it replaces your Indian SIM.
When do the days on a France eSIM start?
At the first connection to a French network, not at install, so a QR code install on home Wi-Fi uses none of the plan’s days. A Jio pack starts at first use, and an Airtel prepaid pack when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network.
Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a France eSIM?
WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs go by SMS to your Indian number, which the France plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active as a second line with its data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.
Is one eSIM enough for France and Switzerland?
Not the France plan, which covers mainland France and Corsica only. The Europe plan lists 41 countries, France and Switzerland among them. On Vi, the ₹3,495 Ultra pack moves from FREE data in France to 2 GB in Switzerland.
Does my phone support eSIM?
Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list before you pay. Your phone must run an eSIM alongside a physical SIM, so the Indian SIM stays in for OTPs while the eSIM carries the data.
