What is data roaming, and should it be on or off when you travel from India?
Data roaming in one paragraph: international roaming vs the data roaming switch
Data roaming is a phone setting that lets a line use mobile data on a network that is not its home operator’s. International roaming is different: it is the service your operator switches on for your number. Both must allow it before your Indian SIM gets mobile data abroad.
The operator side sits on the pages for Airtel, Vi and Jio. On a phone with two lines the data roaming toggle is set per line. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The operator rules below apply whether you buy from us or not.
Should data roaming be on or off? The two-line rule
Switch data roaming off on your Indian SIM and on for your travel eSIM. The travel eSIM exists to carry data abroad, and a line with data roaming off carries no mobile data while it roams. In Apple’s words: “If you have an international data plan, you may need to keep Data Roaming on.”
| Line | Data roaming | Mobile data | What the line is for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian SIM (Jio, Airtel or Vi) | Off | Off | Your number: OTP texts, and calls if your pack includes them |
| Travel eSIM | On | On, set as the data line | Maps, WhatsApp, rides, hotel Wi-Fi backup |
Apple’s mobile data page (Apple Support India, 16 Sep 2026) says you can turn off data roaming when you travel internationally “to avoid roaming charges”. Its travel eSIM page (21 Sep 2026) adds that if you use both lines, “your travel eSIM will be used for data. You might still incur roaming fees from your home eSIM.” The same page says “International roaming with an eSIM works just like roaming with a physical SIM”, so the advice holds for a physical Jio,
Airtel or Vi SIM too. The OTP guide covers the SMS side.
One trap catches dual-SIM users. Google’s Pixel help says “Only one SIM can be the default for data.” If the Indian line stays the data line with roaming on, a background app can pull data from it at your operator’s rates while the eSIM sits idle. Set the eSIM as the data line and turn mobile data off on the Indian line. If the eSIM still shows no service, the no-signal checklist covers the other settings.

What happens on Jio, Airtel and Vi if data roaming is on without a pack
With data roaming on and no pack,
Airtel prepaid bars data, Vi keeps data off under RoamSafe, and Airtel postpaid starts a daily pack once a day’s charges pass ₹698. For Jio, we hold no verified statement, so check the MyJio app. We read the rules below on 12 Oct 2026.
| Operator and plan | Roaming on, no pack | What the document says |
|---|---|---|
| Airtel prepaid | Data is barred | Without a pack, or after it ends, data is barred “to avoid any accidental usage” |
| Airtel postpaid | Standard rates, then a ₹698 day pack | Once the day’s charges in that country exceed ₹698, Airtel applies a ₹698 pack (1 GB, 100 minutes, 10 SMS) until 11:59 pm local time |
| Vi | Data stays off | RoamSafe keeps mobile data off without a pack; SMS “ACT IRDATA” to 199 turns it on for 2 days at standard rates |
| Jio | Not in our documents | Check the MyJio app before you fly |

Read the Airtel postpaid row as a cycle, not a total. The same rule applies again the next day, and the charges are billed in the following bill cycle with no waiver. Whether pre-threshold charges come on top of the ₹698 is not stated, so we print no trip total.
Jio adds a rule for manual network choice: “The pack benefits are applicable only on the preferred partner network in the visited country, if any other partner is chosen then standard rates will be applicable.”
Turn data roaming on or off: iPhone, Pixel, Samsung
On an iPhone, Apple’s steps (Apple Support India, 6 Jul 2026) are: open the Settings app, tap Mobile or Mobile Data, turn on Mobile Data, then tap Mobile Data Options; with Dual SIM or Dual eSIM, tap the number you want to modify before Mobile Data Options. Then turn on Data Roaming. To turn it off, Apple’s mobile data page (16 Sep 2026) lists “Turn Data Roaming on or off” among the options of each line. Apple’s own pages label the menu Cellular on one page and Mobile or Mobile Data on another, so look for either.
On a Pixel, Google’s steps are Settings, then Network and Internet > SIMs, then the Roaming setting, which Google describes as letting “your phone send data over other operators’ networks”. With two SIMs, Google says to use the tabs at the top of “Mobile network settings” to pick the line.
Samsung’s pages we read print no path for this, so we print none. Its mobile-data troubleshooting page only lists the check “Data Roaming is enabled if you are in roaming”.
The operator side has its own steps. To activate international roaming or deactivate roaming,
Airtel prepaid uses SMS “IRSTART” or “IRSTOP” to 121. For roaming on postpaid, Airtel points to the Airtel Thanks app or Airtel customer care. Vi’s SMS to activate roaming is “ACT IMRS” to 199, with standard roaming rates, and its packs can be bought ahead in the Vi app. These switch the service on your number; none of them changes the data roaming setting on the phone. Install the eSIM with the iPhone, Pixel or Samsung guide.
Data roaming charges: how a bill builds up, and the operator rules that stop it
Roaming charges build up when a line with roaming on uses data at standard rates with no pack. Two operator rules block that by default:
Airtel prepaid bars the data and Vi’s RoamSafe keeps it off. Airtel postpaid works differently: once a day’s charges in a country pass ₹698, it switches you to a ₹698 day pack, and after that pack’s benefits are used, data slows to 80 kbps. The simplest stop is data roaming off on the Indian line.
With a travel eSIM, the bill risk sits on the Indian line, not the eSIM. Keep the eSIM as the data line and the Indian line quiet.
Text messages on the Indian number do not depend on this setting; they depend on your operator. Airtel and Vi prepaid both list a ₹118 option for 28 days with free incoming SMS; the OTP guide has the details. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. The roaming hub links the operator pages, and the glossary keeps one-line definitions.
FAQ
What is data roaming in Airtel?
Data roaming is the phone setting that lets a line use mobile data on a foreign network. On
Airtel prepaid, international roaming also needs to be on, and without a pack Airtel bars data abroad. Airtel postpaid starts a ₹698 day pack once a day’s charges pass ₹698.
What is data roaming in Jio?
It is the same phone setting: permission to use mobile data on a foreign network. Jio sells international packs to prepaid and postpaid customers alike, and says pack benefits apply only on the preferred partner network in the visited country. For what Jio does with roaming on and no pack, check the MyJio app.
Should data roaming be on or off abroad?
Off on your Indian SIM, on for your travel eSIM. The Indian line then keeps your number without carrying data, and the eSIM line carries the data you use. Set the eSIM as your data line.
Will I still get SMS if I turn off data roaming?
The data roaming switch controls mobile data, not text messages. SMS on your Indian number depends on international roaming being active with your operator. Airtel and Vi prepaid list a ₹118 option for 28 days with free incoming SMS.
Does data roaming cost money if I use a travel eSIM?
You pay the price of the plan you bought, and the eSIM line uses that plan’s data. The charges to avoid sit on your Indian line, so keep its data roaming off. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee.
Is data roaming the same as international roaming?
No. Data roaming is a setting on your phone, set per line. International roaming is a service your operator switches on for your number, by SMS or app, and packs sit on top of it. Your Indian SIM needs both for data abroad. A travel eSIM needs the phone setting on.
