Armenia eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

A trip from Yerevan to Lake Sevan and the monasteries needs mobile data for maps, translation and ride bookings. An Armenia eSIM supplies it from landing and leaves your Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs. An Armenia tourist SIM bought as a local SIM on arrival gives you a local number, which you need only for local calls. For the next country on a Caucasus trip, see our eSIM and SIM guides by country.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 14,505 departures of Indian nationals to Armenia in 2025. Of the local networks, our Armenia plans use MTS - Vivacell, on 4G, with data only and no calls or SMS. The catalogue has six fixed-data plans (1 to 20 GB) and six unlimited data plans of 3 to 30 days; unlimited speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB in a day. Hotspot / tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule. No plan is the best eSIM for Armenia on every trip, so the sections below sort them by trip.

Airtel and Vi packs in Armenia, and why Jio has nothing to sell

Armenia is on none of the Jio country lists we read: the 100-country, 75-country, World Pack, data-pack and Global Pack lists, or the US, Saudi and Gulf pack lists. That does not say a Jio SIM cannot connect there; it says Jio sells no pack for it, and what happens without one is not in the documents we read. Check the MyJio app.

Airtel and Vi each sell packs that list Armenia. The four rows below cost ₹998 to ₹3,495 as listed on 13 Oct 2026.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Every row links to the operator’s document as read on 13 Oct 2026; ₹ per GB is our own division of price by data. Airtel’s T&C carry the date 24 Sep 2026, and its FAQ page still shows older prices. Airtel sells one pack set for the 189 countries it advertises, and the cheapest pack is ₹698 for 1 GB over a day.

Vi gives Armenia less data for two separate reasons. Armenia is in Vi’s non-UL prepaid zone, so Ultra carries 2 GB and 200 minutes instead of data printed as FREE. It is also in Budget Set 2, where ₹1,495 carries 750 MB. Vi’s postpaid terms list Armenia in Set 2, and we could not confirm that this table is current.

A Jio holder’s options in Armenia are an eSIM or a local SIM; Airtel and Vi packs help only their own subscribers. Our 5 GB plan for 30 days costs ≈ ₹2,000 (13 Oct rate), about ₹400 (US$4.20) per GB, charged US$20.99 by card. On 13 Oct 2026, Airtel’s ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days cost less for a short trip, with 150 minutes added. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. The ≈ ₹ price (charged in USD) is an estimate at the day’s rate.

Airtel prepaid packs book up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Airtel’s prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. See the Airtel roaming page.

Armenia with Georgia: why one Europe plan is not enough

Our Europe plan lists Georgia but not Armenia, so it covers the Tbilisi leg of a Caucasus route and stops at the border. Two things cover both sides: the Global plan, which lists Armenia and Georgia, or one country plan for each.

Prices on 13 Oct 2026, 3 GB for 30 days. Armenia costs ≈ ₹1,333 (13 Oct rate), Georgia ≈ ₹857 (13 Oct rate), and the Global row ≈ ₹1,809 (13 Oct rate). At 10 GB the three figures are ≈ ₹3,239 (13 Oct rate), ≈ ₹2,286 (13 Oct rate) and ≈ ₹4,572 (13 Oct rate). Global cost about 17% less than the two country plans together at both sizes, but it gives half the total data: 3 GB to share instead of 6 GB, 10 GB instead of 20 GB.

Choose Global if one shared pool is enough and you want one install; keep the Global line switched off until you land abroad. Choose two plans if you spend long stretches in each country. The Georgia guide covers the other half of the route, and the Global plan page lists its countries.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A physical Armenia SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot; on a single-slot phone it replaces the Indian SIM, and your bank texts go with it. We quote no Armenia SIM card price in dram because we have not verified current rates.

The eSIM route is bought online before you fly. Check your model on the eSIM phone list, buy on the Armenia eSIM page and install on home Wi-Fi. Our data plan validity starts at the first connection to an Armenian network, so installing early uses none of its days.

Setting up the Armenia eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Armenia. Do the QR code install on home Wi-Fi, then turn on data roaming for the eSIM line after touchdown. The Armenia plans set their access point name automatically on iPhone and Android.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Armenia

Bank OTPs are texts to your Indian number, and the Armenia eSIM cannot take texts. Keep the Indian SIM active as a second line with its mobile data off, and ask your operator whether SMS reaches you in Armenia on your plan. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Airtel’s ₹118 prepaid IR activation, valid 28 days at standard rates, “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack. Vi’s ₹118 standard-rates pack makes incoming SMS free for 28 days. Jio users should check the MyJio app. Dual-SIM set-up is in the OTP guide.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Armenia?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Armenia as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find MTS - Vivacell; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹333 (US$3.49). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹2,000 (US$20.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,715 (US$38.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Jio SIM work in Armenia?

None of Jio’s roaming lists we read, the Global Pack included, names Armenia, so Jio has no pack to sell for it (13 Oct 2026). What a Jio SIM does there without a pack is not in the documents we read; ask Jio before you fly.

Does Airtel international roaming cover Armenia?

Yes. Airtel advertises 189 countries on one pack set, and Armenia is one of them. Prepaid ₹998 buys 4 GB and 150 minutes for 5 days (13 Oct 2026). Without a pack, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad.

When do the days on an Armenia eSIM start?

They start with the first connection to a network in Armenia. Installing the eSIM at home leaves the days untouched.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with an Armenia eSIM?

WhatsApp messages go over the eSIM’s data. OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, which this data-only eSIM cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active in the phone.

Is one eSIM enough for Armenia and Georgia?

Yes with the Global plan, which lists both. Our Europe plan lists Georgia but not Armenia. Two country plans give more total data than one Global plan row, at the cost of two installs.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Our eSIM phone list shows whether your exact model takes an eSIM; a model not listed should be treated as no.
