Bandar Seri Begawan at dusk: sort out your Brunei SIM card before you land.

Of Jio, and Vi, only Airtel sells a prepaid data pack for Brunei: ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days, as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Jio sells no data pack for Brunei, and Vi’s prepaid terms list none. Our data-only Brunei eSIM, installed in India, starts at ≈ ₹670 (12 Oct rate) for 1 GB over 7 days, charged US$6.99 by card.

Brunei SIM card or eSIM: what Indian travellers need

A Brunei trip needs mobile data for maps, bookings and messages, not a Bruneian number. A data eSIM installed in India supplies that from landing, while your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. A Brunei SIM card earns its place only when someone must call you on a local number. If Brunei is one stop on a Borneo route, our guides to other countries cover the next one.

The Ministry of Tourism counted 16,705 departures of Indian nationals to Brunei in 2025. We hold no 2024 figure for Brunei, so we state no growth.

Our Brunei plans use the UNN network (5G) and come in nine sizes: 1 GB for 7 days, 2 GB for 15 days, 3, 5 or 10 GB for 30 days, and unlimited data for 3, 5, 7 or 10 days. The unlimited plans slow to 1 Mbps once you pass 3 GB in a day. Hotspot or tethering use draws on the same data allowance; our plan details do not state a hotspot rule. We promise no signal in any one place.

Your Airtel pack in Brunei, and why Jio and Vi prepaid sell none

Of Jio, Airtel and Vi, Airtel alone sells prepaid data packs for Brunei: the three in our table cost ₹998 to ₹2,998 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Jio sells no data pack for Brunei; only the Global Pack balance (spent at standard roaming rates) lists it. Vi’s prepaid terms list no pack for Brunei.

Vi’s postpaid table lists Brunei in Set 2, and we could not confirm that this table is current. Your SIM still works once international roaming is on, but without a pack Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Our Brunei plan with 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹3,830 (12 Oct rate), about ₹383 (US$4.00) per GB, charged US$39.99, plus any markup your card issuer applies. On 13 Oct 2026, Airtel’s ₹2,998 pack cost less for the same 10 GB over 30 days and added 300 minutes on your Indian number. If you are on Airtel, the pack is the better choice for a month in Brunei. If you are on Jio or Vi prepaid, there is no Brunei data pack to compare.

Book an Airtel prepaid pack up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, it expires with no reimbursement. Its validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. Our plan counts from its first connection to a Brunei network. More on Airtel packs.

A week in Brunei: roaming pack vs eSIM

5.6 GB for 7 days (0.8 GB a day, social media and photos): the cheapest prepaid way to get it.

Operator packs also carry calls and SMS on your Indian number; the eSIM is data only. Packs at the operator’s ₹ price, as listed on 13 Oct 2026; the eSIM at the market rate of 13 Oct, charged in US$. Work out your own trip.

Brunei with Sabah or Sarawak: one plan or two

Our Brunei plan is sold for Brunei alone. Our Malaysia plan reaches Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo, but it does not list Brunei. A road trip from Bandar Seri Begawan to Miri or Kota Kinabalu therefore needs two country plans, or one Global plan that lists both countries.

For 5 GB over 30 days, the Brunei plan costs ≈ ₹1,915 (12 Oct rate), the Malaysia plan ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate) and the Global plan ≈ ₹2,681 (12 Oct rate). Two country plans give you 5 GB in each country but mean two installs and a switch of the data line at the border. The Global plan is one install and one 5 GB allowance for both. It lists India, so keep its line switched off until you land abroad, and enter its access point name by hand on Android.

The operator verdict changes at the border too. Jio’s ₹951 pack (4 GB, 10 days) covers Malaysia but not Brunei, and Vi prints Ultra-pack data as FREE in Malaysia while listing no prepaid pack for Brunei.

Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A physical Brunei SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot. On a phone with one slot it replaces your Indian SIM, and OTPs to that number stop until you swap back. An eSIM for Brunei bought from India is installed before you fly and leaves the Indian SIM in place.

A Brunei tourist SIM bought as a local SIM on arrival gives you a Bruneian number; the eSIM gives you data the moment you land. We quote no Brunei SIM card price because we have not verified current rates, and no plan is the best eSIM for Brunei on every trip.

Setting up the Brunei eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land in Brunei. Scan the QR code on home Wi-Fi. Data plan validity starts at the first connection to a Brunei network, so a QR code install at home uses none of the days. The plan sets its access point name automatically on iPhone and Android.

After landing, switch on data roaming for the eSIM line. Check your model on the eSIM phone list first; the install guide shows the screens and the Brunei eSIM page lists the plans.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Brunei

Your bank sends OTPs by SMS to your Indian number, and the Brunei plan has no SMS, so it cannot receive them. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. Ask your operator before you fly whether SMS reaches you in Brunei on your plan.

Airtel’s prepaid IR activation, ₹118 for 28 days, “allows unlimited incoming SMS” and needs an active base pack (13 Oct 2026). No page can promise that every OTP will reach you; the OTP guide covers the dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Check before you fly

What if the eSIM doesn’t work when you land in Brunei?

Check four settings, in this order, before you write to us.

The first is the line for mobile data. On iPhone it is Settings > Mobile Service > Mobile Data; on Android, the SIM manager. Pick the travel line there; your Indian line stays on for calls and SMS, with its mobile data off.

The second is data roaming, for the eSIM line only. The eSIM is a foreign profile, so the phone treats Brunei as roaming for it.

The third is the APN. On this plan it sets itself, so leave it alone; you don’t need to type one.

The fourth is a restart. Restart the phone or switch airplane mode on and off, and let it find UNN; this can take a few minutes after you leave the plane.

Still no data? Write to us on WhatsApp or at support@esimgo.in with your order number, or go through the no-signal checklist. Do not delete the eSIM to “try again”: a deleted profile usually cannot be installed twice from the same code. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

What I’d choose (and when NOT to buy the eSIM)

For a week of maps, rides and messaging I’d take 1 GB for 7 days, ≈ ₹666 (US$6.99). For two weeks or more, with photos and social media, I’d go for 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹1,905 (US$19.99). If you video-call and stream every day, take the unlimited plan for 7 days, ≈ ₹3,620 (US$37.99), with 3 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps.

I would not recommend the eSIM in three cases. If you need calls or SMS on your Indian number every day, a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack carries them (compare the packs). If your phone has no eSIM or is locked to one operator, it cannot take the plan: check your model first. And if your group travels together all day and shares one connection, a pocket Wi-Fi can cover everyone.

FAQ

Will my Jio SIM work in Brunei?

A Jio SIM works once international roaming is on, but Jio sells no data pack for Brunei. Only its Global Pack balance, spent at standard roaming rates, lists the country (13 Oct 2026). A data eSIM installed in India gives you mobile data without spending that balance.

Does Airtel international roaming cover Brunei?

Yes. Brunei is on Airtel’s country list, and Airtel advertises 189 countries with one set of packs. Its prepaid packs of 5, 10 and 30 days cost ₹998, ₹1,298 and ₹2,998 as listed on 13 Oct 2026. Without a pack, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad.

When do the days on a Brunei eSIM start?

At the first connection to a Brunei network, not at install, so a QR code install on home Wi-Fi uses none of the plan’s days. An Airtel prepaid pack starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage.

Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with a Brunei eSIM?

WhatsApp messages run on the eSIM’s data. Bank OTPs go by SMS to your Indian number, which the data-only Brunei plan cannot receive, so keep the Indian SIM active as a second line with its data off. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

Is one eSIM enough for Brunei and Malaysian Borneo?

Not the Brunei plan. Our Malaysia plan reaches Sabah and Sarawak but does not list Brunei. For both countries, install two country plans or one Global plan that lists both, and keep the Global line switched off until you land abroad.

Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your exact model on our eSIM phone list before you pay. Your phone must run an eSIM alongside a physical SIM, so your Indian SIM stays in for OTPs while the eSIM carries the data.
