Kuala Lumpur at dusk: compare Airtel roaming with a Malaysia eSIM.

international roaming Malaysia is Airtel’s all-country prepaid set: ₹998 for 4 GB over 5 days or ₹1,298 for 6 GB over 10 days (T&C dated 24 Sep 2026). Jio covers a KL stopover with a ₹589 one-day pack, and Vi has three routes. The nine packs in our two tables cost about ₹194 to ₹796 per GB where data is capped, checked 12 Oct 2026.

Short answer: Airtel’s Malaysia pack is its all-country set

sells no Malaysia-only pack. The Airtel IR pack Malaysia travellers buy is the same prepaid pack it sells for every covered country, usually ₹998 for 5 days or ₹1,298 for 10 days. Its prepaid validity is calculated in IST, not in Malaysian time.

A pack is the right buy when calls on your Indian number matter. For data alone, a Malaysia eSIM from India does the job without minutes; install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad.

India’s Ministry of Tourism counted 867,126 departures to Malaysia in 2025, up from 765,344 in 2024: about 13% more (our calculation). Leisure and business made up 89.92% of the 2025 departures.

Jio packs that cover Malaysia

No Jio Malaysia pack exists as such. Malaysia sits on Jio’s 100-country, 75-country, World Pack and data-pack lists, and the four rows below cost ₹589 to ₹1,551 as listed on 12 Oct 2026. For one or two days in KL, the ₹589 pack is the day option; for a week with calls, the ₹951 pack runs 10 days.

eSIM Go is not affiliated with Jio, , Vi or BSNL. Pack details are taken from their own pages on the date shown.

Airtel and Vi packs for Malaysia (table)

For international roaming Malaysia, the two prepaid rows below are the usual choice. Vi roaming Malaysia options come in three kinds: the South Asia pack (₹1,899, 1 GB a day for 5 days, 250 minutes), Ultra in Vi’s UL zone with data printed as FREE, and Budget packs in Set 1. Prices as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

Stopover maths: for a single day, Jio’s ₹589 pack beats Airtel’s ₹698 pack (1 GB, 100 minutes) and Vi’s ₹695 one-day pack (1 GB and 120 minutes a day in its UL zone) by ₹106 to ₹109. Airtel’s FAQ page still shows ₹898 and ₹1,198, while the current T&C list ₹998 and ₹1,298.

You can book an Airtel prepaid pack up to 30 days before travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, the pack expires with no reimbursement. Vi states that its IR packs are “not applicable for customers in J&K, Assam and North East”. A Malaysia and Singapore trip fits one pack from any of the three; see Singapore.

Cost per GB for a 5-day and a 10-day trip

Five days in Malaysia cost about ₹190 a day on Jio’s ₹951 pack, ₹200 on ’s ₹998 and ₹380 on Vi South Asia, which carries the most data, 5 GB. Over 10 days, Jio’s ₹951 pack drops to about ₹95 a day and Airtel’s ₹1,298 to about ₹130. All are our derivations from prices listed on 12 Oct 2026.

On a 10-day trip, Airtel international roaming Malaysia with the ₹1,298 pack costs ₹347 more than Jio’s ₹951 and gives 2 GB more, about ₹174 per extra GB. A 7-day trip outlasts Airtel’s 5-day pack by two days, so the 10-day pack is the Airtel choice for a week.

Our Malaysia plans are data-only and run on . A stopover plan of 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹191 (12 Oct rate); 5 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹957 (12 Oct rate), about ₹192 (US$2.00) per GB, charged US$9.99 by card. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Read those prices against the cost per GB column on the day you buy. The plans cover Peninsular Malaysia with Penang and Langkawi, plus Sabah and Sarawak on Borneo. Pack validity differs: ours starts at the first connection to a Malaysian network, Jio’s at first use, Airtel’s when the phone latches on to a covered foreign network. See the Malaysia eSIM page and the Malaysia SIM card guide.

A KLIA airport SIM is the local option: a physical card from a Malaysian operator. It needs a free slot, and identity is checked before a local line is issued. We quote no prices for it.

Which Indian SIM works in Malaysia for bank OTPs depends on SMS, not data. OTPs reach your Indian number, and a data-only eSIM cannot receive them. To keep Indian number for OTP use, leave that SIM in as a second line with mobile data off and ask your operator about SMS in Malaysia. Airtel prepaid (₹118 activation, “allows unlimited incoming SMS”, needs an active base pack) and Vi (₹118, free incoming SMS) each sell 28 days of it. No page can promise that every OTP will arrive; the OTP guide has the settings.

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

How we checked these prices

Each row shows its checked on date, 12 Oct 2026 (IST). The figures come from Jio’s plan list, ’s T&C PDF dated 24 Sep 2026 and Vi’s prepaid T&C PDF, each read on the operator’s own site. The ≈ ₹ per GB column is price ÷ GB, rounded. We bought and activated nothing; these are published prices.

Malaysia’s place on each operator’s country list decides coverage. For international roaming Malaysia appears in Vi’s Ultra, Budget Set 1 and South Asia lists; Vi’s list is an image transcribed by hand, so confirm Malaysia in the Vi app first. On the South Asia pack it shares the list with Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
