eSIM vs physical SIM for travel from India

For a trip abroad you have three real options, not two: keep your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM on an international roaming (IR) pack, swap it for a tourist SIM at the airport, or add a travel eSIM next to it. This page compares them on cost, calls, OTPs and effort.

Short answer: which is better for a trip abroad

In the eSIM vs physical SIM choice for a trip, a travel eSIM suits mobile data: your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs while the eSIM carries the data. A roaming pack wins when you need calls on your Indian number. An airport SIM is the fallback for a phone without eSIM support.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

Three options compared: Indian SIM on roaming, airport tourist SIM, travel eSIM

Airtel’s 5-day prepaid pack costs ₹998 for 4 GB, about ₹250 per GB (our derivation, price ÷ GB). Jio’s ₹1,555 pack gives 12 GB over 15 days, about ₹130 per GB, but works only in the USA, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia. Both prices are as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

The table sets one dated operator pack beside each alternative.

Our table of operator rows was checked on 12 Oct 2026. The airport row carries no price because we hold no verified list of airport SIM prices, and we do not quote a figure we cannot source. Packs also depend on the network you land on. Jio states that “the pack benefits are applicable only on the preferred partner network in the visited country”.

What an airport swap costs you

A tourist SIM replaces your Indian SIM in the tray of a phone with one physical slot. While it sits there, the SMS your bank sends to your Indian number has nowhere to arrive. Dual-SIM phones can hold both. If your phone also supports an eSIM, the eSIM adds a second line without removing the first.

Whether a counter asks for your passport depends on the local seller and local rules, so read the seller’s own terms; we state no requirement here.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. How card payments work.

Disadvantages of an eSIM for travellers

The disadvantages of an eSIM for travel come down to four limits. Your phone must support it, most travel plans carry data only, the profile belongs to one phone, and a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive your bank OTPs. You can check each one before you pay.

Phone support comes first: check the list of eSIM phones, because a phone without eSIM cannot use the plan at all. Almost all our plans are data-only, with no calls and no SMS, and none of them carries your Indian number; the country page shows the plan type. Most roaming packs from Jio, Airtel and Vi include minutes for calls to India. The profile belongs to one phone. You cannot lend an eSIM to a friend as you would a SIM, and if you are switching phones before the trip, ask us on WhatsApp before you reinstall. Last, bank OTPs reach your Indian number by SMS, so keep your Indian SIM active, as the guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs explains. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you abroad.

The other side of the eSIM vs physical SIM debate is mostly domestic. eSIM advantages such as multiple profiles on one phone and no plastic card to lose matter less on a two-week trip. A lost or stolen phone is a risk with either type. Signal strength depends on the network the plan uses abroad, not on whether the SIM is a card or a profile, and we hold no verified battery measurement for either type. Your travel use decides: data for maps and rides points to an eSIM, calls to your Indian number point to a pack.

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. The eSIM basics page explains how the profile works.

When a physical SIM is still the better choice

Your Indian SIM on a roaming pack is the better choice in three cases: you need to take calls on your Indian number, your phone has no eSIM, or you want one bill and one provider. A pack also keeps your calls and SMS on the number your bank and your contacts already know.

Airtel’s 1-day prepaid pack costs ₹698 for 1 GB and 100 minutes, in and out (Airtel T&C dated 24 Sep 2026), so a one-day trip with calls fits a pack, not a data-only eSIM. Some postpaid and annual plans now bundle a few days of roaming — check your plan in the Airtel or Vi app before you travel. Compare with the roaming pack calculator and tables before you decide.

If your phone has no eSIM, do not buy one: a purchase for an unsupported phone cannot connect. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed. Pick the country only after the phone check passes.

Frequently asked questions

Is eSIM better than a physical SIM?

For mobile data abroad, a travel eSIM usually is: your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs and the eSIM carries the data. For calls on your Indian number, an operator roaming pack is better. A phone without eSIM support needs a physical SIM or a pack.

What are the disadvantages of eSIM?

The phone must support eSIM, most travel plans are data-only, the profile belongs to one phone, and a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive bank OTPs sent to your Indian number. Keep your Indian SIM active for SMS and ask your operator whether SMS works abroad on your plan.

Do eSIMs drain the battery faster?

We hold no verified battery measurement for either type, so we state no figure. Abroad, keep data roaming off on your Indian SIM so that only the eSIM carries data.

Can I go back to a physical SIM?

Yes. When you add a travel eSIM as a second line, your Indian SIM stays in the phone, so there is nothing to switch back. Delete the eSIM only after the trip ends.

Is a travel eSIM better than buying a local SIM?

It saves the counter queue and keeps your Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs. A local SIM may include calls; that depends on the seller. We hold no verified airport SIM prices, so compare with the seller’s own list.
