PDP authentication failure: what the error means and how to fix it on a travel eSIM

The phrase does not occur in the 3GPP standard, and the Apple, Samsung and Google support pages we read on 20 Oct 2026 do not print it. The closest entry in 3GPP TS 24.008 (version 19.5.0) is cause #29, “User authentication failed”.

Data won't open after landing? A PDP authentication failure starts with finding which line carries data.

What “PDP authentication failure” means

In plain words, cause #29 means the network refused to open a data session for this line. The standard’s annex says the service was “rejected by the external packet data network due to a failed user authentication”. The standard also lists other causes, such as #27, “missing or unknown APN”, so we cannot tell which one your network sent. Your balance is a separate check, on the Balance card of your order page.

Which line shows the error: your Indian SIM or the travel eSIM

Find the line that carries mobile data first. Apple says “Your iPhone can use one mobile data network at a time”, and Google says “Only one SIM can be the default for data.” If that line is your Jio, or Vi SIM, switch data to the travel eSIM. Then run the checks below on the eSIM line.

The no-signal checklist prints the data-line menus. The data roaming guide explains why the two lines get opposite settings.

Two SIMs, one data line: before fixing a PDP error, find which line carries mobile data.

Fix it in this order: data line, data roaming, APN, restart

Run the checks in this order: data line, Data Roaming, APN, restart. The first two are switches you can set back. A wrong APN can cost you mobile data and add charges, Apple warns, so it comes third. No page we read ties any of these steps to this message.

  1. Data line. Select the travel eSIM for mobile data.
  2. Data Roaming. Turn it on for the eSIM line only. iPhone (Apple, 6 Jul 2026): Settings, Mobile or Mobile Data, the number you want to modify, Mobile Data Options, Data Roaming. Pixel (Google): Settings, Network and Internet, SIMs, Roaming. The Samsung page we read prints no path.
  3. APN. Only if your order page lists one; see the next section.
  4. Restart. Apple first suggests “Turn on Airplane Mode for at least 15 seconds”, then off, then a restart.

The APN on your order page: 107 of 348 Android plan entries need it typed

The APN, Apple says, “defines the network path for all mobile data connectivity”. In our catalogue on 20 Oct 2026, 107 of the 348 plan entries need it typed by hand on Android, and 4 on an iPhone (our count). None lists a username or password, and your order page gives only the APN name.

On an iPhone, one of Apple’s two paths is Settings, Mobile, Mobile Data Network, and Apple warns: “Don’t edit the APN unless directed by your network provider or mobile device administrator.”

On Android, Samsung India’s path is Settings, Connections, Mobile networks, Access point names (updated 11 Sep 2024). Our order page uses the same names. The APN guide has the Pixel steps.

What not to do before you write to us: delete the eSIM or reset

Do not delete the eSIM to retry. A deleted profile usually cannot be installed again from the same code; the delete guide has the details. Reset Network Settings needs care too. Apple’s text for it does not mention eSIMs, so we make no claim about what it does to your travel eSIM.

Apple’s iPhone User Guide (en-IN, iOS 27) says of it: “All network settings are removed.” It adds: “Cellular data roaming may also be turned off.” Turn Data Roaming back on for the eSIM after a reset. “Delete All eSIMs” is a separate option. Samsung’s reset note, that it also resets Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and other network settings, is quoted on our mobile data checks page.

Write to us first with the order e-mail, your phone model and a screenshot of the line settings. Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn’t work and it isn’t your phone’s fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

The same message on your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM abroad

On an Indian SIM, mobile data abroad needs international roaming switched on, and then each operator applies its own pack rule. These are rules, not causes of the message: no operator page we read links them to it. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here.

Airtel’s terms (24 Sep 2026) bar prepaid data without a pack “to avoid any accidental usage”. Vi’s RoamSafe keeps mobile data off until an SMS “ACT IRDATA” to 199 turns it on for 2 days at standard rates. Vi’s FAQ adds that “any in-built data quota on your postpaid or prepaid pack is not valid for usage outside of India”. Jio states: “The pack benefits are applicable only on the preferred partner network in the visited country, if any other partner is chosen then standard rates will be applicable.”

The data line and Data Roaming checks above apply to an Indian SIM too. For your own line, ask your operator; packs are on our Airtel, Vi and Jio pages.

FAQ

What does PDP authentication failure mean?

The phrase is not in the 3GPP standard or on the maker pages we read. The closest entry is cause #29 in 3GPP TS 24.008, “User authentication failed”: the network refused to open a data session for this line.

How do I fix PDP authentication failure on iPhone?

Make the travel eSIM your mobile data line and turn on Data Roaming for it. Enter an APN only if your order page lists one; Apple warns against editing it otherwise. Then restart, and do not delete the eSIM.

How do I fix PDP authentication failure on Android?

Select the travel eSIM as the mobile data SIM and turn on roaming for it. If your order page lists an APN, enter it under Access point names; 107 of our 348 plan entries need one on Android. Restart once and keep the eSIM installed.

Why does my travel eSIM show PDP authentication failure abroad?

The message names no cause, and we cannot tell which one your network sent. Check the data line, Data Roaming on the eSIM and the APN on your order page. Then write to us with your order e-mail.

Should I reset network settings to fix it?

Not first. Apple says it removes all network settings and may turn off cellular data roaming. Its text does not mention eSIMs, so we cannot say what it does to a travel eSIM. Write to us before you try it.

Does PDP authentication failure mean my data has run out?

The message does not mention your balance, and cause #29 describes a failed user authentication, not an empty plan. Your order page shows data left, days left and the end date; check it first.
