Which iPhones support eSIM in India (iPhone 11 to 18 Pro)

Every iPhone from the XS, XS Max and XR onward takes an eSIM, per Apple’s India support page. That runs up to the iPhone 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. Two eSIMs at once need an iPhone 13 or later; older models pair one eSIM with your nano-SIM.

Apple India lists eSIM on the iPhone for “An iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR or later”. That covers the iPhone 11 to 17 families, the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max, both SE models since 2020, the 16e, the 17e and the Air. The iPhone X and iPhone 8 and earlier work with a physical nano-SIM only.

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone. Other brands are on the phone list; the taps are in the iPhone install steps.

India iPhone models and eSIM (table)

Table checked on 12 Oct 2026 against Apple Support (India) and the apple.com/in tech-specs pages. Every model below takes an eSIM. Two eSIMs at once is Apple’s “iPhone 13 models and later” rule; earlier models pair one eSIM with a nano-SIM. The note column quotes the SIM line of each model’s India page.

How many eSIMs an iPhone can hold and use at once

An iPhone 13 or later runs two eSIMs at the same time, or one eSIM plus a nano-SIM. Apple states it directly: “You can use Dual SIM by using a physical SIM and an eSIM. iPhone 13 models and later also support Dual SIM with two eSIMs, in addition to a physical SIM and an eSIM.” Checked 12 Oct 2026.

A phone can store more eSIM profiles than it runs. Apple’s eSIM page says an iPhone can “manage up to eight or more eSIMs”, without a list of models. The iPhone Air spec page gives the same count: it “stores eight or more eSIMs” and keeps two active. The other India spec pages say “Dual eSIM support” with no storage count.

Physical SIM plus travel eSIM. Works on every model above except the iPhone Air. Your Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM keeps the Indian number; the travel eSIM carries data.

Two eSIMs. Needs an iPhone 13 or later. Useful when your Indian line is an eSIM.

Setup journey. Apple says that with iOS 26 and later, if you download a travel eSIM, “you might experience a customised travel eSIM set-up journey”.

Our travel eSIM carries data only, with no number for calls or SMS, so keep your Indian SIM active for OTPs.

eSIM-only iPhones and the India nano-SIM + eSIM models

The iPhone Air is the one eSIM-only iPhone in this table. Apple India states: “iPhone Air is activated with an eSIM and does not support a physical SIM.” Every other India spec page we opened, from the iPhone 11 to the 18 Pro Max, lists “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)”. Checked 12 Oct 2026.

An iPhone Air has no slot for the Indian SIM, so the Indian line must itself be an eSIM, with the travel eSIM as the second active one. Ask Jio, Airtel or Vi how to convert your line.

The iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max keep the slot. Apple Support’s India tech-specs pages list both as “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” with “Dual eSIM support”. Apple India’s iPhone 18 Pro page says the same for the 18 Pro and 18 Pro Max. For your own phone, do a model number check under Settings, General, About; the same screen shows the EID, and an EID confirms eSIM.

iPhone bought abroad: what changes

An iPhone bought in China mainland has no eSIM, except four models. Apple states: “In China mainland, only iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air support eSIM.” Hong Kong and Macao differ too. A phone bought elsewhere may not match its India row in the table above.

Apple adds that in Hong Kong and Macao “certain iPhone models feature Dual SIM with two nano-SIM cards”. If your phone came from either place, check it for an EID before you buy a plan.

A locked phone matters too. Apple states: “To use two network providers, your network provider must unlock your iPhone, or both plans must be from the same network provider.” Ask the seller or the original operator whether your iPhone is unlocked.

FAQ

Does the iPhone 17 eSIM come with a physical SIM slot in India?

Yes. Apple India lists the iPhone 17 SIM setup as “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” with “Dual eSIM support”. The 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max list the same on Apple Support (India). The iPhone Air is the eSIM-only model.

How many eSIMs on iPhone 16 can run at once?

Two. The iPhone 16 lists “Dual eSIM support” and “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)”, so it runs two eSIMs, or one eSIM and a nano-SIM, together. Its spec page gives no stored-profile count.

Does the iPhone 11 eSIM work in India?

Yes. Apple lists the iPhone 11 in India as “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” and adds “eSIM not supported in all regions.” It runs one eSIM and one nano-SIM, not two eSIMs.

Is there an iPhone 13 eSIM and an iPhone 15 eSIM in India?

Yes. Apple Support (India) lists both as “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” with “Dual eSIM support”. Two eSIMs at once start with iPhone 13 models, per Apple.

Can I use a travel eSIM on an iPhone bought abroad?

Is the iPhone 17 Pro eSIM only in India?

No. Apple Support (India) lists the iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max as “Dual SIM (nano-SIM and eSIM)” with “Dual eSIM support”. Only the iPhone Air is eSIM only. Check Settings, General, About on your own phone.
