# Travel eSIM for trips abroad from India: how it works and how to choose

An eSIM for travel is a data plan you install on your phone in India and use abroad. Most plans carry mobile data only, so your Indian SIM stays in the phone for calls and OTPs. Below we set an eSIM for travel against three other ways to get online abroad and compare five kinds of seller.

## Short answer: a data plan you install in India and use abroad

With an eSIM for travel you buy online, install before departure by scanning a QR code, and leave activation on arrival: switch the line on when you land. For almost every destination we sell, the plan days start at the first connection to a network abroad; the country page states the rule. The [eSIM basics page](/what-is-an-esim/) explains the profile.

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

## Four ways to stay online abroad from India

A Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack keeps your number, and most packs include minutes. A travel eSIM carries data for maps and messaging. A physical tourist SIM needs a free slot, and pocket Wi-Fi puts a device in your bag; the [Japan guide](/international-sim/japan/) weighs a rented router against an eSIM for a family. The eSIM vs roaming vs local SIM table below shows when each wins.

Airtel's 5-day prepaid pack costs ₹998 for 4 GB, about ₹250 per GB (our derivation, price ÷ GB), as listed on 12 Oct 2026. [Jio's ₹1,555 pack](/roaming/united-states/), as listed the same day, gives 12 GB over 15 days, about ₹130 per GB, but covers only the USA, Mexico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico and Australia.

<!-- visual-slot -->

| Way | What you get | Wins when | Limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian roaming pack | Airtel prepaid ₹998: 4 GB, 5 days, 150 min, 20 SMS ([Airtel T&C, 24 Sep 2026](https://assets.airtel.in/static-assets/online-recharge-ui/assets/pdf/tnc.pdf)). Jio ₹1,555: 12 GB, 15 days, 150 min out, unlimited incoming ([Jio IR plans](https://www.jio.com/selfcare/plans/mobility/prepaid-plans-list/?category=International%20Roaming&categoryId=SW50ZXJuYXRpb25hbCBSb2FtaW5n)) | You must take calls on your Indian number | Coverage differs by operator; compare price per GB |
| Travel eSIM | Data-only SIM: Asia plan, 5 GB for 30 days, ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate), about ₹172 (US$1.80) per GB | You need maps, rides and messaging data and keep your Indian SIM for OTPs | No calls, no SMS; the phone must support eSIM |
| Tourist SIM at the destination | Set by the local seller; no verified price | Your phone has no eSIM, or you stay for months | A physical one needs a free slot; the Indian SIM comes out of single-tray phones |
| Pocket Wi-Fi | A portable router that shares data with your phone; no verified price | Several people share one connection | You carry and charge a second device |

The tourist SIM and pocket Wi-Fi rows carry no price because we hold no verified list of either.

The eSIM example costs ≈ ₹861 (12 Oct rate), charged US$8.99 by card. The ≈ ₹ figure is an estimate at the day's rate. Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. [How card payments work](/how-to-pay/).

## Which kind of seller fits your trip

Travel eSIM providers fall into five types: Indian sellers charging in rupees, global eSIM apps, Indian operator packs, local tourist SIMs, and us. We name no brands and rank none. The criteria are how you pay, the refund rule and who the seller of record is.

| Seller type | How you pay | Refund rule | Seller of record |
|---|---|---|---|
| Indian sellers charging in rupees | In ₹; UPI confirmed at 3 of the 7 we read on 12 Oct 2026 | Where a window is published, it runs from 24 hours to 60 days, each with conditions | An Indian private limited company at 6 of 7 |
| Global eSIM apps | In US$ or euros; none of the large ones we checked showed rupees to a Mumbai IP | Set by the app | A company outside India at the three whose entity we read |
| Indian operator packs | On your Jio, Airtel or Vi account, in ₹ | Operator terms; Airtel's prepaid pack expires unreimbursed if you do not travel within 30 days of booking | Your operator |
| Local tourist SIMs | At the counter or the seller's site, in local terms | Set by the local seller | The local operator or reseller |
| Us | Card, for example Visa or Mastercard, among others, charged in US$ | Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network | JET SHARING MOBILITY INC, United States; your statement shows "JET SHARING" |

Our row states our limits: we do not promise UPI or RuPay, the ≈ ₹ price is an estimate, and the charge is in US dollars. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

Two more terms differ. Some Indian sellers show prices before GST and add it at checkout, others include it, so compare the final total. A plan marked "[unlimited](/esim-unlimited/)" can carry a daily high-speed limit; read that line. Our plan details state no hotspot rule, and hotspot use draws on the same data allowance. Ask each seller about top-up, because rules differ.

## Country, regional or global plan

Pick a country plan for one country, a regional plan for several countries in one region, and a global plan for three or more regions. In the country vs regional plan choice, a regional plan works only in countries on its list, so check every stop. Our [international SIM hub](/international-sim/) compares the options destination by destination.

Here is the trap. In our catalogue on 12 Oct 2026, the [Asia plan](/international-sim/asia/) lists Thailand, Vietnam, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka. It does not list Nepal, Bhutan or the Maldives. On a Bangkok and Kathmandu trip, an Asia plan leaves you without coverage in Nepal after you have paid. That trip needs a [Thailand](/esim-thailand/) plan plus a [Nepal](/esim-nepal/) plan. With the Asia or global plan, keep the eSIM line switched off until you land abroad.

Operator lists have gaps too. On 12 Oct 2026 the Maldives and Bhutan sit in none of the country lists for Jio's data packs, only in its Global Pack balance list. Georgia is in none of Jio's lists, not even the Global Pack. Airtel's country list and one of Vi's prepaid lists include all three. For a three-region trip, the [global plan](/international-sim/global/) covers most routes under one validity, but it too does not list Bhutan or the Maldives.

## My phone has no eSIM: what then

If your phone has no eSIM, do not buy an eSIM plan: it cannot connect. Check your model on the [list of eSIM phones](/esim-compatible-phones/). Without eSIM support you have three paths: a roaming pack, a tourist SIM or pocket Wi-Fi.

A roaming pack keeps your number. A physical tourist SIM replaces your Indian SIM in a single-tray phone, so your bank SMS has nowhere to arrive; a dual-SIM phone holds both. We name no seller for either.

## Keeping your Indian number for OTPs and WhatsApp

Bank OTPs arrive as SMS on your Indian number, and a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive them. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with its mobile data off, and ask your operator whether SMS works abroad on your plan. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you.

WhatsApp stays tied to your Indian number and uses whichever line carries data, so set the eSIM as the data line. The [guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs](/help/keep-indian-sim-for-otp/) explains the dual-SIM settings.

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad.

## Frequently asked questions

### How does an eSIM for international travel work?

You buy a plan online, install the profile by QR code on home Wi-Fi, and switch the line on after landing. Most plans carry mobile data only. Your Indian SIM stays in the phone for calls and OTPs.

### Are eSIMs better than roaming?

For mobile data, a travel eSIM keeps your Indian SIM free for calls and OTPs, and you can compare its price per GB with the pack you would otherwise buy. A roaming pack is better when you must take calls on your Indian number.

### How do I choose an eSIM for travel?

Compare by seller type, not by brand: how you pay and in which currency, the refund rule, the seller of record and any fair-use limit. Then check that every country on your route is on the plan's list.

### Can I keep my Indian SIM active while using a travel eSIM?

Yes, on a phone that runs an eSIM and a physical SIM together. Keep the Indian SIM as a second line with its mobile data off. Ask your operator whether SMS works abroad on your plan.

### How many eSIMs can my phone store?

It depends on the maker. Apple says an iPhone can manage up to eight or more eSIMs. For other brands, read the maker's specification page for your model.

### What are the disadvantages of a travel eSIM?

The phone must support eSIM, most plans are data-only, and the profile belongs to one phone. Our eSIM vs physical SIM page lists each limit.
