# SIM or eSIM for Indian students going abroad: the first weeks

## Short answer: an eSIM for landing, a local plan once you settle

Buy a travel eSIM in India, install it at home and use it for your first weeks abroad. Switch to a local student plan once you have an address and a routine. According to MEA figures reported by The PIE News, 1,882,318 Indian students were studying abroad on 1 Jan 2025.

An arrival eSIM covers the gap between the airport and your first local plan: maps, housing searches and WhatsApp messages home in the first week abroad. Most of our plans are data-only, and none carries your Indian number. We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The sections below say when an operator pack or a local plan is the better choice. The [travel eSIM guide](/travel-esim/) covers the basics.

## UK, USA, Canada and Australia: what changes by country

The four destinations below behave differently, and the differences decide what you buy. Student counts are secondary figures: the MEA PDF of the 4 Dec 2025 Rajya Sabha reply returned a 404 error for us, so we rely on The PIE News and a search-index copy that agree. Studying in Georgia instead? The [Georgia guide](/international-sim/georgia/) covers the first weeks in Tbilisi.

| Country | Indian students (1 Jan 2025) | What changes for your SIM |
|---|---|---|
| Canada | 427,085 | One Canada eSIM stays active for at most 90 days; Jio's US, Mexico and Canada pack covers Canada |
| USA | 255,447 | Some US plans add a US number with minutes and SMS; Jio's US, Mexico and Canada pack applies |
| Australia | 196,108 | Jio's US, Mexico and Canada pack also covers Australia; our Australia plans carry data only |
| UK | 173,190 | One plan family adds a UK number for local calls; the Jio pack does not apply |

The [UAE](/international-sim/united-arab-emirates/), at 253,832, counts more Indian students than Australia or the UK, but most of them are school pupils of NRI families. Across all countries, 6.26 lakh students left India to study in 2025, according to a Ministry of Education reply reported by Deccan Herald [3]. Education was 1.88% of all Indian departures that year, by Ministry of Tourism data [4].

Canada is the case where a wrong purchase costs money. A 30-day plan at ≈ ₹3,639 (12 Oct rate), charged US$37.99 by card, works as a bridge. The longest Canada plan runs 30 days, and the same Canada eSIM stays active for at most 90 days in total, so it is not a term plan. Have a local plan in place before day 90 at the latest. Read the country guide before you buy: [UK](/international-sim/united-kingdom/), [USA](/international-sim/united-states/), [Canada](/international-sim/canada/), [Australia](/international-sim/australia/).

## Keeping your Indian number for OTPs while you study

Bank OTPs arrive as SMS on your Indian number, and a data-only travel eSIM cannot receive them. No plan of ours carries your Indian number. A plan with a foreign number receives texts sent to that number, not to your Indian one. Keep the Indian SIM working for the whole course, not only the first week.

Keep your Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with its mobile data off. Your phone must run an eSIM and a physical SIM together; check yours on the [eSIM phone list](/esim-compatible-phones/). Ask your operator whether SMS reaches you abroad and whether the SIM stays active for months without a recharge. No page can promise that every OTP will reach you. The [guide to keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs](/help/keep-indian-sim-for-otp/) shows the dual-SIM settings.

For the first weeks, an operator pack can carry that same SIM abroad. Jio's text for its US Mexico and Canada pack reads: "Pack applicable in USA, Mexico, U.S.Virgin Islands, Canada, Puerto Rico & Australia only." So one Jio purchase covers a student flying to the USA, Canada or Australia, and a hop across the border. It does not cover the UK.

## Parents buying for a student: install and test in India

Parents can buy the eSIM and install it on the student's phone at home, on Wi-Fi: open SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The installed plan then shows in SIM settings, and the student keeps that line switched off until landing.

For the UK, the USA, Canada and Australia, every plan in our catalogue on 12 Oct 2026 counts its days from the first connection to a network there, so installing early uses no days. For other destinations, the country page states the rule. Confirm the phone supports eSIM first; the [install guide](/how-to-install-esim/) lists the steps.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. Many Indian cards have online international payments switched off by default, so enable them before checkout; [how card payments work](/how-to-pay/).

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

## Long-validity plans vs a local student plan

The first two rows are operator packs as listed on 12 Oct 2026; the last two are our 30-day plans, charged by card in US dollars. Jio's pack carries the most data for 30 days, while Airtel's runs a full year on 7 GB. Neither replaces a local plan for a whole term.

| Option | Price | Data | Validity | ≈ ₹ per GB |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| [Jio US Mexico and Canada pack](https://www.jio.com/selfcare/plans/mobility/prepaid-plans-list/?category=International%20Roaming&categoryId=SW50ZXJuYXRpb25hbCBSb2FtaW5n) | ₹2,555 | 25 GB, then up to 64 kbps | 30 days | about ₹102 |
| [Airtel prepaid IR pack](https://assets.airtel.in/static-assets/online-recharge-ui/assets/pdf/tnc.pdf) | ₹4,999 | 7 GB | 365 days | about ₹714 |
| Our USA eSIM, 30 days | ≈ ₹1,579 (12 Oct rate) | 10 GB | 30 days | about ₹158 (US$1.65) |
| Our Australia eSIM, 30 days | ≈ ₹909 (12 Oct rate) | 5 GB | 30 days | about ₹182 (US$1.90) |

Jio's ₹2,555 pack wins on calls: it includes 250 outgoing minutes for local calls and calls to India, free incoming calls and 100 SMS. Airtel's ₹4,999 prepaid pack runs 365 days with 7 GB, 100 minutes and 200 SMS. It is a hybrid: in India you get 2.5 GB a day, and the validity runs from the date of purchase, so a long wait before flying burns days.

Our USA catalogue on 12 Oct 2026 also lists one long validity plan: 365 days with a US number, 10 GB, 75 minutes and 30 SMS. Incoming calls use up those minutes, and the plan makes no international calls, so it cannot call India.

A local student plan is the usual choice once you settle: it gives you a local number and a monthly price that fits a term. This page quotes no local carrier names or prices because we have not verified current ones. The same order applies to a UK SIM card for international students: our UK eSIM for arrival, a local plan for the term. Our UK plan family with a UK number helps if a landlord or a delivery needs one before you sign up locally. Line up the local SIM after arrival, before the eSIM runs out.

## Frequently asked questions

### Which SIM is best in the UK for international students?

A UK SIM card for international students is usually a local plan bought after you arrive. For the first weeks, install a UK eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Our UK plan family with a UK number suits students who need local calls. We quote no UK carrier prices because we have not verified current ones.

### Can I buy a UK SIM card from India?

Yes. You can buy a UK eSIM from India and install it at home on Wi-Fi; it connects when you land abroad. A physical UK SIM card needs a free slot in your phone. With an eSIM, your Indian SIM can stay in its slot for bank OTPs.

### Should students use an eSIM or a local SIM?

Use an eSIM for the first weeks and a local SIM once you have an address and a routine. The eSIM gives data on landing. A local student SIM gives a local number and a term-long monthly price.

### How do I stay connected in the first week after landing?

Install the eSIM at home, keep it switched off until you land, then turn it on for data. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone with its mobile data off, so bank OTP texts can reach you if your operator delivers SMS abroad.

### Which SIM is best for students in the USA or Canada?

Jio's US, Mexico and Canada pack covers both countries, in 15, 30 and 35-day versions as listed on 12 Oct 2026. A travel eSIM suits data-only needs. One Canada eSIM stays active for at most 90 days, so treat it as a bridge, not a term plan.
