# USA SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Indian travellers have three ways to get data in the USA: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack, a US prepaid SIM (the USA tourist SIM) bought after landing, or a travel eSIM installed before the flight. Our USA eSIM starts at ≈ ₹338 (9 Oct rate) for 1 GB of data over 7 days, charged US$3.49 by card.

## USA eSIM or SIM card: what Indian travellers need

You need mobile data in the USA more than a US phone number. An eSIM for USA trips, installed in India, supplies data from the moment you land, so an America SIM card (a USA SIM card) is optional. Most of our USA plans carry data only, with no calls and no SMS, and none carries your Indian number.

The data plans run on T-Mobile and Verizon. They cover Hawaii and Puerto Rico as well as the mainland, while Alaska gets only partial service. A few plans add a US number with a set number of minutes and SMS, and the plan cards on the [USA eSIM page](/esim-united-states/) mark them "Local number".

India's Ministry of Tourism data gives about 2.0 million Indian departures to the USA in 2025 (our derivation: 6.1% share × 32,829,079 total departures). Our [guides to other destinations](/international-sim/) cover the rest of the top routes from India.

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Do the QR code install at home on Wi-Fi: every USA plan counts its days from the first connection to a US network, so data plan validity does not start at installation. Check that your phone supports eSIM: find your model on our phone list, or look for an "Add eSIM" option in its SIM settings. See the [install guide](/how-to-install-esim/) and the [phone list](/esim-compatible-phones/).

Full refund within 30 days of purchase, as long as the eSIM has not connected to any network. If the eSIM doesn't work and it isn't your phone's fault, we refund the payment whether or not it was installed.

## Your Jio, Airtel or Vi pack in the USA vs this eSIM (checked 12 Oct 2026)

Jio's US-Mexico-Canada pack is the lowest per GB of the five packs below: ₹1,555 for 12 GB over 15 days (about ₹130 per GB) or ₹2,555 for 25 GB over 30 days (about ₹102 per GB). The five packs cost ₹998 to ₹6,995 as listed on 12 Oct 2026, and each bundles calls on your Indian number. The pack-by-pack comparison is on [US roaming vs eSIM](/roaming/united-states/).

We sell travel eSIMs, so we have an interest here. The table still shows when your operator pack is the better choice.

| Pack | Price | Data | Days | ≈ ₹ per GB | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jio US-Mexico-Canada, 15 days | ₹1,555 | 12 GB | 15 | about ₹130 | [Jio IR plans](https://www.jio.com/selfcare/plans/mobility/prepaid-plans-list/?category=International%20Roaming&categoryId=SW50ZXJuYXRpb25hbCBSb2FtaW5n) |

Source: operator documents linked in each row, checked on 12 Oct 2026; ≈ ₹ per GB is our derivation (price ÷ GB). Airtel's T&C are dated 24 Sep 2026, while its FAQ page still shows older prices. Full pack lists: [Jio](/roaming/jio/) and [Airtel](/roaming/airtel/).

The Jio pack wins on a trip with calls to India. The 15-day pack adds 150 outgoing minutes and the 30-day pack 250, and incoming calls are free on both. Our data plans have no minutes, and no plan of ours carries your Indian number. For data alone over a month, set Jio's about ₹102 per GB against our 10 GB plan for 30 days at ≈ ₹1,595 (9 Oct rate), about ₹160 (US$1.65) per GB, charged US$16.49.

Packs also depend on the network you land on. Jio states that pack benefits "are applicable only on the preferred partner network in the visited country", and that "some regions (like the US) have fully retired legacy 2G and 3G networks, requiring 4G/VoLTE or 5G compatible devices." Jio validity begins at first use. Airtel prepaid validity starts when your phone latches on to a covered foreign network and makes chargeable usage. BSNL states it launched a prepaid service with single IMSI on AT&T in the USA from 19 Feb 2026; check allowances on [BSNL's roaming page](https://ir.bsnl.co.in/).

## US prepaid SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

An America SIM card (a US prepaid SIM) bought after landing needs a free SIM slot, while an eSIM bought in India is ready before you board. We quote no USA SIM card price from US carriers because we have not verified current ones. A US prepaid SIM suits a long stay that needs a US number.

The physical card comes from a US carrier or a prepaid brand such as Lycamobile. On a phone with one physical SIM slot, you would remove your Indian SIM and lose OTPs on that number. An eSIM leaves the slot untouched.

Jio states that the US has retired 2G and 3G, so a phone without 4G/VoLTE may not work there on any SIM. A US number helps with local deliveries or a landlord; maps and messaging need only data. For a short trip, a few of our USA plans add a local US number with minutes and SMS, shown on the plan card.

## Parents visiting children in the USA: set it up before they fly

The Ministry of External Affairs counts 2,311,484 NRIs in the USA (as of January 2026), and many trips from India are visits to them. If you are the adult child, buy the eSIM yourself and install it on your parents' phone before they fly. A data plan has no minutes, so they reach you by WhatsApp, not by phone call.

For a month, 5 GB for 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,160 (9 Oct rate), charged US$11.99, plus any [markup their bank charges on US$ payments](/how-to-pay/forex-markup/). Install it on their home Wi-Fi before the flight, with the QR code on a second screen such as a laptop; the days start at the first US connection.

Their Indian SIM stays in the phone for bank OTPs; the phone must run an eSIM and a physical SIM together. Show them WhatsApp video calls before they fly.

## Students: the first weeks before a US number

The PIE News, retelling an MEA reply in the Rajya Sabha (4 Dec 2025), counts 255,447 Indian students in the USA as on 1 January 2025. That figure is secondary: the MEA PDF returned 404 when we opened it. In the first weeks, an eSIM keeps maps and banking apps running until a US plan is in place. Our [student eSIM guide](/student-esim/) compares long-validity options.

A 30-day plan bridges the gap until a US student phone plan. Keep your Indian SIM active for OTPs from your Indian bank. An [unlimited data plan](/esim-unlimited/) for the USA slows to 1 Mbps after 5 GB a day, so a heavy user still counts GB.

## Indian bank OTPs in the USA: why a US number does not help

Indian bank OTPs go by SMS to your Indian number, and no USA plan of ours carries it. A plan marked "Local number" receives texts sent to its US number, not to your Indian one. Keep the Indian SIM in the phone with mobile data off, and ask your operator whether SMS reaches it in the USA.

Jio's three US-Mexico-Canada packs each include 100 SMS and free incoming calls; for incoming SMS, check the MyJio app before you fly. Airtel prepaid lists a ₹118 roaming activation, valid 28 days with an active base pack, that "allows unlimited incoming SMS", as listed on 12 Oct 2026. A student who later moves to a US plan, or a parent staying for months, still needs the Indian number for Indian bank OTPs and UPI. No page can promise that every OTP will arrive; [keeping your Indian SIM for OTPs](/help/keep-indian-sim-for-otp/) covers the dual-SIM settings.

Your card is charged in US dollars. Your bank converts the amount at its own rate and may add a foreign-transaction (forex markup) fee. [How card payments work](/how-to-pay/).

## FAQ

### eSIM or roaming pack for a USA trip?

For data, a USA eSIM installed in India before you fly; for calls on your Indian number, Jio's US pack (₹1,555, 12 GB, 15 days, 12 Oct 2026). Our data plans run on T-Mobile and Verizon from the moment you land and carry no calls or SMS, while a few plans add a US number. Keep your Indian SIM in the phone for OTPs.

### Will my Indian SIM work in the USA?

Your Indian SIM works once international roaming is on, but data needs a roaming pack, and Airtel bars prepaid data abroad without one. Jio's US-Mexico-Canada pack costs ₹1,555 for 12 GB over 15 days, and Airtel's 5-day prepaid pack costs ₹998 for 4 GB, as listed on 12 Oct 2026.

### Do I need an America SIM card, or is a USA eSIM enough?

A data eSIM is enough for maps and banking apps, and a few of our USA plans add a US number with minutes and SMS. Buy an America SIM card if you need a US number for a long stay.

### Can I use WhatsApp and get OTPs with a USA eSIM?

WhatsApp runs on the eSIM's data. OTPs arrive by SMS on your Indian number, which none of our USA plans carries, so keep your Indian SIM active and check SMS roaming with your operator.

### How do I install the USA eSIM before I fly?

At home on Wi-Fi, open your phone's SIM settings, add an eSIM and scan the QR code you receive after payment. The plan days start when the eSIM first connects to a US network.

### Does my phone support eSIM?

Check your model on our eSIM phone list before you buy, or look for an "Add eSIM" option in your phone's SIM settings.
