# Italy SIM card for Indian travellers: roaming, local SIM or eSIM

Data in Italy comes from one of three places: a Jio, Airtel or Vi roaming pack on your Indian SIM, an Italian SIM card bought after you arrive, or a travel eSIM you install in India. Our Italy eSIM is data-only, without calls or SMS: 1 GB over 7 days costs ≈ ₹286 (12 Oct rate), charged US$2.99 by card.

## Italy eSIM or local SIM: what Indian travellers need

In Italy, a SIM card or eSIM works hardest on data: train apps, museum tickets, maps, translation. An Italian number is rarely needed. Our plan uses three Italian networks: Wind Tre and Vodafone on 5G, Iliad on 4G. It has no calls and no SMS, so your Indian SIM stays in the phone for OTPs. The Ministry of Tourism counted 201,869 departures of Indian nationals to Italy in 2025, down from 217,002 in 2024, about 7% fewer (our calculation). Leisure or business accounted for 53.01% of the 2025 departures. Coverage reaches beyond the mainland to Sicily and Sardinia and to the smaller islands of Capri, Ischia and Elba.

That calls for the 10 GB plan over 30 days, at ≈ ₹1,340 (12 Oct rate). On an eight-day trip, Airtel's 10-day pack gives 6 GB, a little under the 6.4 GB estimate. Our 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,340 (12 Oct rate), about ₹134 (US$1.40) per GB, charged US$13.99, plus any [markup your card issuer applies](/how-to-pay/forex-markup/). A pack is the right call when you need minutes on your Indian number.

Data plan validity runs on different clocks. Book an Airtel prepaid pack up to 30 days before you travel; if you do not travel within 30 days, it expires with no reimbursement. Our eSIM starts its days at its first connection to an Italian network.

## Italy plan or the Europe plan for Rome, Paris and Zurich

Once the trip leaves Italy, the Italy plan stops being enough. The [Europe plan](/international-sim/europe/) lists 41 countries, Italy, France and Switzerland among them. For ten days at 0.8 GB a day, about 8 GB (our calculation), 10 GB over 30 days costs ≈ ₹1,819 (12 Oct rate) on the Europe plan, against ≈ ₹1,340 (12 Oct rate) for Italy alone.

Vi users should watch the Swiss border. France and Italy are in Vi's UL zone and Switzerland is not, so the ₹3,495 Ultra pack gives 2 GB there, about ₹1,748 per GB (our calculation). ## Local SIM after landing vs an eSIM bought in India

A physical Italy SIM card from a local operator needs a free slot, and its real advantage is an Italian number for people who must call or text you there. Our eSIM already runs on three Italian networks. We quote no Italy SIM card price in euros, because we have not verified current rates.

Identity is checked before a local line is issued. On a single-slot phone, the Italian card takes the place of your Indian SIM, and OTPs stop until you swap back.

## Setting up the Italy eSIM before you fly

Install the eSIM in India; it connects when you land abroad. Do the QR code install on home Wi-Fi, with the code from your order e-mail. The plan's days start only at its first connection to an Italian network, and the install window runs up to a year after purchase.

## Bank OTPs and your Indian number in Italy

Bank OTPs reach you as SMS on your Indian number, never on a data-only plan like our Italy eSIM. So keep the Indian SIM in the phone as a second line with mobile data off. Ask Jio, Airtel or Vi before departure whether SMS reaches you in Italy on your plan.

### Will my Indian SIM work in Italy?

A Jio, Airtel or Vi SIM works once international roaming is on, but for mobile data plan on a roaming pack. Without one, Airtel bars prepaid data abroad and Vi keeps mobile data off. Italy is in Vi's UL zone, so Ultra data is not capped there.

### Do I need to buy a SIM card in Italy?

Buy an Italy SIM card only for an Italian number. For data, an eSIM installed in India works from the moment you land.

### When do the days on an Italy eSIM start?

At the eSIM's first connection to an Italian network. Setting it up at home on Wi-Fi costs no days.

### Can I get OTPs and use WhatsApp with an Italy eSIM?
